Ch 3: The Chance

"So let me get this right," James says as he sits down on the couch in the common room. "You asked Marlene out and then kissed Karri? All in the same day?"

"Yes!"

"It's simple." Remus says, "Knight to A3."

The knight moved and Peter glared.

"What's simple?" Sirius asked.

"Just choose one girl to spend time with."

"Pawn to A1." Peter says.

Sirius shook his head.

"I can't pick." Sirius. "I know which one I want. But..."

"But what?" Remus asked. "Pawn to A2."

"I don't want to hurt Karri nor Marlene."

"Knight to B3." Peter says. "I still don't get it."

"Get what?" James asked. "Chess or Sirius's girls?"

Sirius grabs a pillow and chucks across the room.

"Don't break the window." James says glaring at Sirius.

Sirius glared back.

"What am I going to do?"

"Sleep?" Peter says. "It's late."

"Checkmate."

Peter glared before standing up.

"I'm done."

Peter walked to the stairs. Not saying a word to any of them.

"I still don't get why Karri has to marry your brother to make her father proud." Remus says.

"What?" James asked.

"Who-"

"Karri came to me before going to you." Remus explained. "I didn't think you'd kiss her."

"I didn't mean to."

"Didn't mean too what?"

The boys jumped and turned to see Karri at the stairs.

"Ho-how long have you've been standing there?" Sirius asked.

"Not long. I just hear: I didn't mean too."

Karri lied. But she didn't want Sirius to know that. She saw Sirius relaxed.

"What are you doing up?" Remus asked her.

"I couldn't sleep." She says. "Thought I take a walk or something."

"Oh."

The boys watched Karri walk down the stairs. Sirius noticed how she wasn't looking at him. She would look at Remus and James. Just not him. Did that mean she heard everything? Sirius turned just as the common room door opened.

"Karri." Sirius says.

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry."

"Sure."

Sirius watched Karri walk out of the common room.

"Well?" Remus asked.

"Well what?"

"Aren't you going after her?"

"Why?"

"Didn't you promise her?" James asked.

"Aren't promises meant to be broken?"

Karri walked down the empty hallway. Ignoring the pain in her heart. So; Sirius didn't mean to kiss her. He didn't mean for it to happen. She found her way to the Ravenclaw tower. A small sigh escaped her lips.
