"Mother," I breathed.
"Lucy!" she says, hugging me.
"How did you find me here?"
"I read in the paper about your last big case."
"They do have papers in the north of England.."Lockwood mutters. I glare, and he falls silent.
"W-Why are you here?"
"I want you to come home for Christmas."
I stare at her. Home? For Christmas? She hates Christmas. We were never allowed to put up a tree, and we never got presents. So why does she want me to come home?
"Look, Mother, I am going to stay here for Christmas."
"But, Lucy, don't you want to help put up the tree?"
This caught me off guard. Was she serious?No, she couldn't be.
"No, Mother. I thought you hated Christmas. We never celebrated it."
"Well, I want to put up a tree this year."
"I'm sorry, but I am going to stay here."
"I can't belive you! You are actually going to stay here with these people?!"
"One of 'these people' just so happens to be my boyfriend."
"Your boyfriend?!"
"Yes."
She steps back, fury in her eyes.
"FINE!!!!!DON'T COME BACK!!!!EVER!!!!"
And with that, she stormed off, leaving the three of us at the door.I close it, and run to my room, trying not to let tears spill over.
I spend the rest of the afternoon alone, crying in my room. Around 9:00, I hear a knock at the door.
"Who is it?"
"It's me."
Lockwood. I jump up to open the door, and he comes in.
"Are you okay? That must have been hard for you."
"I'm fine, it's just I never expected her to come."
"None of us did. And if you ever feel bad because of her, you can talk to me."
I smile weakly. He kisses my forehead, and stands to leave.
"Anthony?"
"Yes?"
"Could you stay?"
he nods, and lays down next to me on my bed, holding me in his arms, and singing a made up song to make me fall asleep. We fall asleep like that, me in his arms, him softly singing to me.
