A Mermaid Tale Book 2

The Deep

Prologue

Taiven

He was so deep down that he had problems breathing; but his hearing was still perfectly functioning. He heard voices in the distance and the darkness of the cold water surrounding him. Taiven once again wondered why Auron kept him alive; if he wanted the Upper Kingdom to fall, why didn’t he just get it over with? All of the dark merman’s attempt to make Taiven obey to him had failed, so there really was no reason to keep him around anymore. But Taiven knew why he was still alive. It was to torture Tara, to make sure she didn’t do anything stupid or risky that could damage whatever plan that the merfolk of the Deep were making. He couldn’t feel her emotion’s anymore, and it discouraged him. The day Auron took him was probably the worse and best day of his life. For one thing, he and Tara were now ruling the ocean together—well suppose to be ruling the ocean together— because they made their vows. But now, she was sadly queen on her own, because he had been taken by them, those of the Deep.

“Trust me Father” A voice was whispering in the distance. “My plan shall work.”

“Braxlin, I know very well that your intentions are good, but we simply cannot wait that long.” Taiven recognized the voice of Auron whispering back. “If we make wrong false movement the human queen will know what we are doing.”

“Please all I need is a small more amount of time, and then we can proceed to the next step of your plan. Please Father.” Braxlin seemed to be pleading his case; whatever it was.

There was a silence, a silence in which all was audible was Taiven’s breathing—or suffocating; he was no longer able to identify the difference. How long had he been down here? Too long, he suddenly thought. Not one single rescue mission had been attempted; it discouraged and angered him all at the same time.

“Alright Son” Auron finally answered. “But you are responsible for them, and if anything goes wrong, you will not go without severe punishment.”

            “I understand Father.” Braxlin answered.

What were they talking about? What type of horrible thing was the Deep preparing this time? Taiven tried to piece the puzzle up together in his mind, but nothing came to light.

“Braxlin” The king of the Deep suddenly said. “Have you any news from the Upper Kingdom?”

“No, the queen forced a perimeter around the kingdom; we cannot get close without any guards seeing us. “ He sounded disappointed; it brought a smile to Taiven’s lips. “Because of Adara our spies in the kingdom are being caught as well; the color of their tails reveal too much of their true nature.” Braxlin sighed. “But, I was still able to come across a very interesting piece of information. I do not see much use in using it has a weapon or a threat, but it is still very peculiar.”

            “Please explain.”

“From the rumors and stories going around, I was able to find out that their human queen is with child.” Taiven’s heart felt like it just dropped. But he needed to remind himself that maybe Braxlin was aware of his listening and was making up a story just to worry and weaken him. I will not give in, he thought as he continued to listen despite everything.

“With Taiven’s child?” The king sounded skeptic.

“Yes, I believe so.”  There was a pause, a long an agonizing silence. “Why are you smiling Father?”

“Son” Auron answered. “I believe luck is now finally on our side. The Upper Kingdom will see its end sooner than expected.” The merman let out a small evil laugh.

Taiven blood iced. Please let it all be lies, he thought and prayed.
