47. That Awkward Moment

I don’t know how he did it, but a moment later Tony was kissing me – and I wasn’t resisting, despite my inner trauma. But maybe that’s why I didn’t stop him.

Tony Stark was a pretty good distraction - and he knew it.

His thick dark hair was soft under my fingers, his lips warm against my cold ones. My mind was temporarily wiped clean of any thoughts apart from his name: Tony. His arms were tight around my waist, locking me in place, and my heart was beating fiercely.

After a moment or so, things started to get slightly heated – literally.

Some say that passion is linked to anger, but I had never believed it until this moment.

Fire began to crackle slightly at our feet, the flames licking us harmlessly. This didn’t deter Tony though. There was a small smile on his lips as he kissed me, like he was enjoying making me warm up.

Ahem,” Someone coughed loudly, and the flames disappeared in a split second as we broke apart and looked down the corridor, I nervous and Tony curious.

I blushed fiercely when I saw who it was.

Peter had his arms folded, eyebrows raised and a sour expression on his face.

“When did you two get together?” He asked bluntly, and my blush deepened. These humans had no sense of common decency.

“Excuse me?” I managed, and his normal blue eyes flicked to me. There was pain in them.

“Kid, you’re back to normal again! Welcome back!” Tony said cheerfully, but Peter didn’t return his grin.

“Yeah, and look what I wake up too.”

There was a very awkward silence, and I looked at the floor uncomfortably.

“You didn’t answer my question,” Peter said bitterly.

“Does it matter?” I asked sharply, unable to keep the annoyance out of my voice.

“I think I’m going to go and check that everything’s ok back down there,” Tony remarked, for the first time sounding uncomfortable.

I shot him a pure look of anger, which melted his uneasy look and he grinned wickedly at me instead.

“Have fun,” He said absently, in a voice low enough that only I could hear, before disappearing through the door leading down to the cell.

Peter came forward now, and I folded my arms crossly.

What is your problem, Peter?” I asked curtly, and he scowled angrily.

Him. He’s my problem!”

“How so?”

“You know exactly ‘how so’.”

He stopped about a meter away from me, and I had to tilt my head up slightly so I could look directly into his piercing eyes.

“What do you want me to say?” I enquired angrily, and he ran a hand through his hair in exasperation.

“That I just walked into a mistake.”

“Well, that wouldn’t be honest, would it?”

I was getting more uncomfortable by the second. I didn’t want to be having this conversation in my current state. All my feelings were jumbled up, thanks to Iva’s death and Stark’s kiss.

“He’s not the right guy for you,” Peter said, sounding earnest, and he flinched involuntarily at the dark look I gave him.

“And, I suppose, you are?”

“Yes!”

I stopped and stared.

“What?” I asked, disconcerted, and Peter looked determined to make me see his way.

“I thought we had something,” He began, but I interrupted heatedly.

“No, we didn’t. You had more of ‘something’ with Iva then me!” I told him, annoyed as I recalled him flirting with Iva at the ball, which seemed like a lifetime ago. However he looked genuinely confused.

“What?”

“You and Iva at the ball – you were both looking more than happy in each other’s company!”

“I was doing my job!”

“So was I, but you didn’t see me flirting with everyone!”

“This is ridiculous! I was just trying to find out information!” Peter looked furious now, but so was I. My arms erupted in white-hot flames as my anger rose.

“And yet I was the one who did find out about the book, Atlantis, and everything else about this god-forsaken place!” I shouted at him, and he glared at me.

“I was not flirting with Iva. She’s like, twice my age!”

“So am I!”

We were shouting now, absolutely furious with each other and I poked him in the chest angrily as I shouted.

“And you could have kissed me at the ball, but no, you went off to find Iva instead!” I yelled, and he growled in exasperation.

“I was interrupted!”

“So? Would you have kissed me if you hadn’t been interrupted?” I snarled, and a hurt looked flitted across his face before it was replaced with a steely resolve.

He didn’t answer, and instead grabbed my hand that was prodding him, and pulled it hard so I stumbled forward. He gripped my chin with an unbreakable grip and smashed his lips against mine. He kissed me for a second before my wits came back to me and I shoved against him with all my Asgardian strength. He flew back, but managed to land on his feet further down the corridor.

I heard the door opening from behind, but I disregarded this.

“Don’t you dare kiss me again!” I screeched.

“Why? Are you telling me you didn’t like it?”

I almost threw a fireball at him, but someone interrupted.

“Wait – did he just kiss you?” Tony asked in disbelief, and I heard the sound of his repulsor blasts firing up.

Peter glared at him, before his eyes met mine.

“Make the right choice, Eldrid. You know I’m right for you.”

“Kid, please. I think we all know who’s best for her.”

I was stood in the middle of them, and I almost tore my hair out as I ran a shaky hand though it harshly. I looked back at Tony, who looked annoyed at Peter and concerned for me. He trusted me with this decision. Then I looked back at Peter who had a confident smile playing across his lips, but his eyes conveyed a desperate look. He trusted me too.

For the love of Odin, why was everything so complicated?
