MARS

I watched in silence as the casket was lowered into the ground. There wasn't very many people that actually attended, but it wasn't a surprise. The Taylors were beside themselves in tears as Mr. Taylor held his wife. She was in complete shambles but Mr. Taylor looked like he was about to murder someone. The few people that did show up just looked on politely but looked like they were ready for him to hurry up and get buried so they could get back to their normal lives. I can't believe Kole had the audacity to show his fucking face and act like he was upset about everything that happened. He was on the other end of the line but maybe that was a good thing, because if I was near him...

Finally, the funeral was over and some of the people went to say their condolences to the Taylors but all I could do was stand there and look at the six foot hole that also held my best friend in the bottom of it... The headstone was a little oddly worded since it mentioned he was a father. I mean, he would have made the best damned dad in the world... I saw it while I was in that weird dream world with him...

I felt a tear escape my eyes before I could blink it away and I quickly wiped it away. I fucked up... I fucked up so badly... If I had only reached out a little better...

"Hey."

"You have to have the biggest balls in the world to come over here and speak to me." I snarled, not wanting to look at him.

"He was my friend too."

"Apparently for the amount of time it took for Dawaen to beat the shit out of him, he wasn't." I clenched my fists. "I swear to God, if I have to look at you..."

"I came to say I was sorry... I should have never even agreed to anything that happened. I don't know what came over me. I mean..."

"Run away."

"What?"

"I said run away."

"Why?"

I finally got enough of my emotions under control that I was able to look over at Kole without immediately connecting my fist to his face.

"Because as of right now, there have to be angels holding me back from committing a murder here at this funeral." I seethed. I looked at Kole with the angriest stare I could muster and apparently, by the surprised look on his face, it was working. "I hope that you get everything that you deserve for what you've done."

"But I didn't do anything-"

"That's right. You did nothing. I hate Dawaen with the passions of a thousand suns, but I think I hate you even more. Dawaen may have hurt him physically, but you..." I finally turned away from him, so angry I could just grit my teeth into ash. "Get away from me, Kole, before I get a hold of you and throttle you."

"Right..."

"And Kole?" He turned to me as I turned to him as well. "If you even come near me, I have no idea what I'll do. Keep your distance."

He nodded, leaving, and when he was gone, I got on my knees, staring at Max's gravestone.

"I should have made a better effort to try and get in contact with you about our friendship. I should have told you that everything was going to be okay... I never got your last text because I was so mad at my mom that I broke my phone and she wouldn't buy a replacement until I was finished with punishment...If I had just known what was going on..."

"Hey." I looked up, finding Zylith standing over me. Her lacey black dress was very pretty but all that made me do is think of how Max likes her... liked her... "May I sit?" I nodded as she pushed the grass around and then finally found a good way to sit down. "It's so surreal... One minute he's okay and the next he's just... not here..."
