One of the most popular SMGs in production, the MP5 has become an icon as an SMG with it's structure and use. Currently adopted by over 40 countries for military and police duties, the MP5 also has sprung up as the weapon with some of the most variants, totalling over 100.  

The MP5 provides the user compact security, close quarters, and/or lightweight capabilities. For those who are aiming for stealth, the MP5 also offers a version known as the MP5SD (SD for "Schalldampfer", German for "Sound Suppressor"), which features an integral suppressor. Meaning that the barrel has been slotted with holes to disperse gas, the gas attributing to much of the muzzle flash of a gun and some of the ound. The integral is "integrated" onto the barrel, hence the name "integral".

Another version designed for rapid deployment and close qaurters is the MP5K, or MP5 "Kurz" (Short). A short barrel variant that can be fired singlehandedly, and fire much faster because of the design of the weapon. 

Many variants of the MP5 exist, and I highly advise you to go "MP5 shopping" if you would like to use th MP5 in your story. Chances are, if you're looking for it, it's there.

The MP5, while having a good run as a SMG, was announced to have a successor by the company, the H&K UMP, which plans to slowly replace the MP5. Even so, the MP5 still has a strong run in the future for many paramilitary forces, and will continue to do so because of its popularity.

Known as the Universale Maschinenpistole (Universal Machine Pistol), the UMP comes as the successor to the popular MP5.

H&K's foremeost motivation to produce the UMP was to address the current problem, that submachine guns at the time lacked the stopping power, due to almost all of them following the same standard of chambering the 9x19 Parabellum. But, due to the higher caliber, the UMP was designed with a slower rate of fire to allow for ease of control and fire.

UMP's distinction is also known for implementing rails on the side of the weapon, top of the weapon, and under the barrel cover to allow for sights, flashlights, lasers, and any other equipment. Besides this improvement with flexibility because of the rails, the UMP itself could be interpeted as just being a frame. All three variants have interchangeable barrels, bolts, and chambers, allowing for a UMP9 for example, to swap out, remove the three parts, and be able to fire a .45 round by taking parts from the UMP45.
