The submachine gun, (SMG) is an old player in the full auto, handheld weapon category. With it's early design and introduction in World War I, the SMG gained dominance in the battlefields of World War II.
The SMG's role has changed direction in modern times, tailoring to local law enforcement and other groups, and less towards the modern military because of the pistol cartidge it chambers, which nowadays, is stopped by standard issue body armor easily.
Even so, in the law enforcement sector, the SMG is replaced at times with the more "powerful" PDW, with it's armor penetrating capabilities in cases where opposition is equipped with body armor to stop regular pistol bullets.
The SMG still is a favorite for those in hostage situations, close quarters, and in areas where a ricocheting bullet is more dangerous than a bullet being fired.
SMGs are also popular for ammo sharing with your pistol or sidearm, depending on the ammunition.
