The origin of the term heavy metal is not completely clear.  A version defends that it was coined by the writer William S. Burroughs, who in his 1961 novel, The Soft Machine, includes the character, The heavy word (translated as serious or deep, in the American slang had entered the counterculture some time  before, and references to heavy music, usually slower and amplified variations of normal pop, were common.In 1968 the term heavy metal appears for the first time in a song, in the phrase, that same year Iron Butterfly published its album of  Heavy titled debut Heavy metal and hard rock terms have been used many times as synonyms, especially when talking about groups of the early 70's. About how the term heavy metal became popular is an issue that remains in the dark Ozzy Osbourne himself  usually refers to the genre more like rock and roll than heavy metal, so probably the new wave of British heavy metal has had something to do.  1988
