I don’t remember much after that.

Everything seemed to blur together. The questions from the police, the check-up from the medic that declared I was in shock. Being surrounded by the host club who were soon shooed away by Kyoya and told they could wait to talk to me.

Even the trip back to the house with Kyoya’s arm over my shoulder seems like something that happened a long time ago.

It wasn’t until he’d escorted me to my room and sat me down on my bed that things finally seemed to come into focus. When he was certain that the blanket he pulled over my shoulders wasn’t going to fall off, he quickly crossed the room and put his back to the door, studying me.

I wasn’t sure what to say.

Was there anything to say?

Well, there was one thing.

“Why’d you come?” I asked, dropping my eyes to the floor and gripping the blanket tightly in my fists.

He was silent for a moment and I began to wonder if he was going to answer.

“That sounds like more than one question,” he said finally. “Come to France? Come to your house? Come to the police station? Come to save you?”

I flinched, fully aware that all of those were exactly what I meant, and how annoyed his tone sounded.

“Any of them,” I managed to say in response. “All of them.”

“They all have the same answer,” he replied instantly. “However, I don’t think you really want to hear it. If you did, you wouldn’t have left me behind in the first place.”

Who knew that I could feel even more guilty than I had before? I hadn’t, but I did now.

“Sorry.”

“For what?”

“I…”

My eyes flickered back up to meet his. I couldn’t read anything in them. His tone was annoyed, perhaps even cold. If there was anything to be seen in those eyes of his, it might have been that he was expecting something.

Expecting what?

“For…” I began, twisting the blanket in my fingers. “For… for everything. Every stupid thing I’ve done recently.”

Did he just smile?

He was smiling.

He actually chuckled.

“Really?” he asked, pushing off of the door. “Everything? Mind listing them out for me? See, it’s been a bit hard to keep track of it all.”

I almost scowled. He was making a joke out of this? Kyoya must have caught the annoyed look on my face because he actually chuckled again.

“Fine,” I muttered. “For hurting you by kissing him back. For ignoring you instead of telling you. For falling into the ocean when I can’t swim. For not telling you when I thought there was something off when your dad called me. For going to France without you. For not telling you that I thought Remy would tell me where… where He was. For sneaking off and going there without you. For… for almost… for…”

“That’s enough,” Kyoya said, cutting me off with a faint smile. “I get the idea.”

My eyes dropped to my hands this time. They were shaking. The memory of what it felt like when they were holding that cold steel appeared in my mind and I squeezed my eyes shut.
