Pocahontas: Age 6

Pocahontas was wandering through the woods alone when she heard someone call out her name, "Pocahontas!"

It was Nakoma.

"Over here!" Pocahontas was staring down at a huge waterfall beneath her.

"Pocahontas! We really should get back-" Nakoma stopped when she saw her friend and heard the roar of the waters. She stepped closer and peeked over the edge.

"Isn't it beautiful," Pocahontas murmured.

Nakoma hesitated before agreeing, "Yeah."

The girls stared for a few seconds before Nakoma broke the silence. "Your father's waiting for you at the village."

Pocahontas nodded in response and started backing away from the waterfall.

"Race you!" Pocahontas sprinted into the woods.

"Hey! Wait!" Nakoma raced after her.

Pocahontas beat her friend to the village's edge. She waited, but Nakoma was not far behind. Together they went to the Chief's tent where her mother was cooking outside.

"Wingapo Mother!" Her mother looked up and smiled. Pocahontas couldn't help but notice her mother's beauty.

"Wingapo, Pocahontas," Her sweet voice answered, "fetch me some vegetables?"

"Sure, Mama, just a bit." Pocahontas raced into the tent where her father sat, cleaning his attire. "Yes Father?"

"Pocahontas, I want you to stay near the village for a while," Her father said, getting straight to the point.

"But why, Papa?" Pocahontas was curious.

He sighed. "You know how the waters are sometimes troubled? Sometimes rushing through the forest unable to be tamed, sometimes as calm as the ground we stand on."

Pocahontas nodded, trying to understand.

"The forest has now become troubled, and I do not want you to go there. Do you understand?"

Pocahontas nodded and looked down at the ground. She loved the woods. They were full of adventure and mystery and it pulled her into it.

"Good, now," he brought a basket of vegetables down from a shelf, "I hear you mother needs these."

Pocahontas smiled sadly and took the basket from him, "Thank you, Papa." She left and took the basket to her mother who quickly chopped them up and added them to a stew.

Pocahontas spotted Nakoma waiting for her near the woods' edge.

"Papa told me not to-"

"I know, I heard," Nakoma told her.

Then Pocahontas saw something run into the forest out of the corner of her eye. She watched it go curiously and was tempted to follow.

"No, Pocahontas don't," Nakoma warned her.

"But that-"

"I don't care, your father said-" Nakoma couldn't finish because her friend was stepping into the forest.

"Pocahontas!" She followed.

...

"Pocahontas, we really need to-" She stopped. Pocahontas was crouched on the ground behind some bushes. She motioned for Nakoma to be quiet. Nakoma came up behind her and tried to see what she was looking at.

"What is it?" She whispered.

Pocahontas pointed to a hallow spot in a nearby tree. Nakoma looked. Something was rustling inside.

"Pocahon-" Again she was cut off my Pocahontas stepping out from behind the bush. She approached the tree and peeked inside. Nakoma stayed where she was.

Pocahontas reached inside and pulled something out. Then she came back to Nakoma and opened her hands. There, lay a tiny baby raccoon. Nakoma couldn't help but adore its cuteness. "That's really cute, but what about your father?"

"You worry too much," Pocahontas said while stroking the little creature's head.

Nakoma rolled here eyes at her friend.

"We could keep him! He could sleep with me and we could feed him nuts and berries and-" This time Pocahontas was cut off.

"No no no no no! We can't keep him! Your father would never allow it!"

"He will when I show him." Pocahontas stared down at the animal in her hands.

"He looks so meek and shy," Nakoma commented.

"That's it!"

"What's it?" Nakoma was confused.

"I'll name him Meeko."
