God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. John 1:5

"When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

"A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more."[

Matthew 2:16-18 NIV

This is the Feast of the Holy Innocents. Christmas is a time to be happy, or really thankful. Psalm 124 is read today: 'we have escaped like a bird' and we have. The gates of Hell will be open to set us free, to find those rooms waiting for us in Heaven.

But its not a time for forgetting. The Christ child came into terror, occupation and exile for a reason. And kings and queens have sat and listened, and politicians too, and other people with power over a few or many others. The gospel does not allow forgetting, of the cruelty of the times of Jesus, and the commitment to end those times.

The gospel of John is specific:

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. John 3:17-18
