The story of Carmel is a story of imagination.* The journey to the mountain is a journey in time and space.

Early hermits tried to follow Jesus by going to the places that he walked in, literally in his footsteps as well as serving as he served, in simplicity and humanity. A combination of the physical and the spiritual. The Way and the Way.

In the quiet places, they feel they better hear the call. Sometimes I wonder if it is a kind of echo-location. If we could waken up that sense, we could home in to the Way like little pigeons. And the Way would take us quicker and cleaner to the mountain top.

A Carmelite is really not alone. She is a hermit in a community that spans the centuries. A Carmelite of the order or of the heart, is accompanied by sisters and brothers here and by those that have gone before, along an ancient spiritual path, seeking Christ.

It's by far the hardest thing I've ever done, to let go of what must be let go of, and to reach out to what is waiting for me.

I have followed and been followed. And so I ask that each step should now be well placed. I can no longer wander, just loving the scenery, for fear of leading someone astray. I must with a clear will make a good path. And climb.

Take my hand.

I will follow you.
