Text Talk/Slang

Ah yes, slang, or as my math teacher says, our modern vernacular. We use slang in our everyday lives, and it's become quite popular. Heck, even I say shook and lit all the time. Yeah, it is annoying, but it's the absolute worst when someone incorporates it into their book. I have seen so many young writers around nine or ten write something like this:

When I walked to school, I saw my bff jessica!!! "Omg heyyy Jess!!!" I squealed. And she was liek "hayyyy gurl!!!! XD"

"i missed u!"

"omg i missed u 2! liek, its been so long!"

"ikr!!!!!! XD"

How the heck do you even pronounce that in person?! Like, do you actually say XD or IKR out loud, letter by letter? Can you imagine the struggle? If you want to add a reference to modern pop culture, that's fine, but avoid slang because not everyone is going to understand everything you're saying. Make sure the reference is appropriate to your time period/era, because if it's set in the 1920's, nobody is going to know who Kanye West is.

Edit: I forgot to add a QOTD yikes

QOTD: Least favorite movie/one you didn't enjoy? I just recently watched Transformers: The Last Knight and I didn't like it. I would rate it a 5-6/10, but the CGI was pretty cool.
