Hate

Always present,
within us, between us;
incipient, insolent hate,
like our shadow,
creeping along with us,
revealed most strongly
when the light betrays
our latent prejudices,
our xenophobic convictions,
and our cultural biases.

The hate
within ourselves,
that we know lays there
like some evolutionary deformity
submerged in the algae infused mud
on a primordial pond bottom,
waiting ...
waiting to be stirred up,
to rise from this grotesque mess
and spew forth the filth
that resonates among us
at our most despicable moments;
to surface, to bring forth
and spew muck,
no better than the lowest among us,
and we become the lowest,
and strain the tenuous threads
that bind us together as one.
