Prologue
Grief was heavy in the air. It was obvious from the tear-streaked faces that stood huddled around five caskets. Five caskets, but only four bodies. No one had known; the ceremony had been closed caskets.
I recognized some members of the crowd as old acquaintances, friends, and family even from my far distance. I watched as tears made their way down my best friend's face and fell off the end of her chin, yet I felt nothing. The caskets were slowly lowered into the ground and yet, I still felt no stir of emotion. I am able to watch my closest friend cry and my other friends get lowered six feet into the ground and not feel a thing. It wasn't until the rifles went off that I realized the ceremony was over and everyone had left. I slowly walked over to the fresh graves that lay side by side. White crosses marked the places where my best friends would spend the rest of eternity. I ran my hand over each name on each white cross. Joe Alisi, Alexander Corradetti, John Parry, Danny Jacobs and Adara William. Five names that would haunt me for the rest of my life. Why? Because I'm the reason they're dead.
