Chapter Thirty: The Awkward Moment The Rat Is A Man
Colette's Point Of View
"Come on," Ron said weakly, clutching onto his rat, "Do you really expect me to believe that you broke out of Azkaban just to get your hands on Scabbers? I mean please I --"
"Ron, give him the rat." Alex said impatiently as Ron looked for support,
"NO! That is not fair! There's millions of rats! How does he know that Scabbers is the right rat?!" He whined. Alex looked in thought for a few seconds before sticking her lip out and nodding at Ron,
"It's a fair question Sirius." Lupin said as he stood up properly, "How do you know?"
"Here. He's there on his shoulder." He said, pulling out a piece of paper from his robes and smoothing it out in his hand. We all looked at his hand and it was a photo,
"Wait. This was in the prophet a while ago." Alex said and pointed to the photo, "I remember it."
"Is that the twins?" I asked, "And Ginny and the other brother no-one likes?"
"Ohh, you mean Percy." Hermione laughed a little,
"Where'd you get this from?" Ron asked and we all looked at Black,
"Fudge. He came to inspect Azkaban and he gave me the paper. I saw this on the front of it and there he was. On the front of the paper. On his shoulder." He said pointing at Ron, "And when I read that the boy would be going back to Hogwarts ... Where Harry was going to be ..."
"Of course." Lupin said quite calmly for a change tonight, "His front paw!"
"You see now?" Black said and smiled smugly,
"He cut it off himself..." Lupin said,
"He cut what off?" Ron asked,
"Don't you get it?" Lupin asked and Ron shook his head,
"Don't you remember that the biggest part of Peter they found was his finger?" Harry butted in and Ron shook his head again,
"Well, I did and I'm not even in with this lot." I mumbled,
"Of course ... So simple yet so brilliant at the same time." Lupin commented,
"Even I wouldn't have thought of it." Alex said, shaking her head in disgust at herself,
"Just before he transformed, he yelled to the whole street I had betrayed Lily and James, then blew 'em up, whipped his finger off and ran down to the sewers."
"I can't believe you've never heard that they found his finger and that's it." I scoffed and Ron glared at me,
"His toe Ronald," Lupin said, "He's missing a toe isn't he?" He stated and Ron's eyes went a little wide,
"Look, Scabbers had just been in a fight with another rat. He's been in my family a long time and he's been okay besides."
"Twelve years right?" Lupin asked, "Curiously long time for a common garden rat isn't it?
"We look after him!" Ron defended,
"You hate that rat!" Alex scoffed and we all looked at her, "Fred told me, 'kay?"
