Chapter 1

Draco’s POV: September 1

I stepped into a compartment of the Hogwarts express, glad to find that no one had occupied it. With a huff I sat down, stretching my legs. I was bloody hell tired! I looked out the window and could see my reflection. My striking blond hair didn't seem as perfect as it should’ve been, and my steel grey eyes had bags under them, as if i hadn't slept in days. i looked away and sighed, i hadn't slept in days.

What in bloody hell was I doing going back to Hogwarts? Oh that’s right, because of my mother. I grumbled, what wouldn't i do for her? She wanted me to complete my education and so I would because she asked me to.

I leaned back in my seat and looked at the luggage rack above me, remembering that one year when Potter hid with his invisibility cloak. That stupid git couldn't even manage to stay still without giving himself away, how he even managed to defeat the Dark Lord was beyond me. I remember blasting Harry and breaking his nose for spying on me and my fellow slytherin’s, he would think twice before doing that again.

Just then the compartment door slid open, snapping me out of my thoughts. A familiar face smiled down at me.

“Hey Draco, being a loner I see.” One of my few friends asked me.

“Great to see you too Zabini.” I replied, venom in my voice.

He just laughed and took a seat across from me.

“Still the same Draco Malfoy, good to know that some things don't ever change.” Blaise Zabini said.

“Draco will always be the same Blaise, you should know that.” Pansy Parkinson said with a smirk as she too came into the compartment and sat down next to me, hooking her arm with mine.

It took everything I had to not move away from her and recoil from her touch. When would she get it through her thick skull that I did not and would not want her, like she does me.

“Draco’s not that bad, he’s just has his problems.” Theodore Nott chipped in as he too entered the compartment, taking a seat next to Blaise.

I cursed them all in my mind. When did I say that they could come into my compartment and disturb my peace?

“What do you guys want?” I growled, a headache starting to form.

“We just want to catch up with our slytherin prince.” Blaise replied, his eyes sparkling with amusement.

I involuntarily tightened my fists.

“Come off it Blaise, leave Draco alone.” Pansy snapped at him.

“Say’s his lap dog.” Nott retorted.

Both Nott and Zabini chuckled at that, only to laugh harder when they looked at Pansy’s face which had turn red with anger.

“What’s so funny?” Gregory Goyle asked as he too made his way into my compartment.

“Pansy’s pug-like face.” Nott replied, making Blaise laugh even harder then before.

“Aren't you going to say anything to your friends Draco?” Pansy asked me.

I turned away from her and looked out the window, glad that the train was finally beginning to move.

“To hell with all of you!” She yelled, letting go of my arm and stomping out of the compartment, practically shoving Goyle out of the way.

“Finally!” Nott said throwing his hands in the air. “I thought she was never going to leave."

Goyle then took the seat next to me.

As the three of them began to talk, I instead just stared out the window, not caring about what they were talking about. I was just so tired, so exhausted. My eyes slowly drooped and before i knew it the darkness took over me and the voices faded away.

I was covered in sweat, my breathing was heavy, and all i could see was fire and feel the intensity of the heat. I pulled Goyle along, hoping that he would snap out of it and start running on his own. But it was no use, that damn mudblood was good with her spells.

“What in bloody hell were you doing Crabbe?!” I shouted at him, still dragging Goyle along with me. I was running as fast as i could, trying to get away from the flaming serpents. “If the Dark Lord doesn't kill you for ruining this, so help me, I will!”

“Come off it, Draco.” Crabbe managed to retort, running faster.

Then out of nowhere a flaming beast intercepted Crabbe. A torturous scream coming out of his lips as he was devoured by the sweltering flames. I didn't hesitate and continued to drag Goyle’s body and onto the tower of desks, which were slowly becoming charred.

I was scared, I didn't want to die, i didn't want to die like this. The flaming serpents which Crabbe had so stupidly brought to life were getting closer. I struggled to breath through the smoke, sweat covered me from head to toe. I looked up and saw Potter. For once in my life, I was grateful to see him.

He dived towards me, i reached my hand towards him, my other holding onto Goyle. My hand clutched his but instantly fell out when he tried to pull me up. Hope drained from me, I was going to die.

“IF WE DIE FOR THEM, I’LL KILL YOU, HARRY!” I heard Weasley yell as he too came diving towards Goyle and I.

Granger and Weasley hurriedly pulled Goyle on their broom and flew off. I in turn scrambled on top of Potter's broom, grateful that he had saved me when he needn't to.

“The door, get to the door, the door!” I screamed at Potter as the flaming serpents came closer. But the stupid git was looking down, searching for something. I then again screamed at Potter, did he not want to live and get out of here?

“The door, get to the door, the door!” I screamed once more, but Potter instead made a quick spin and dived down, catching something with his wrist. And right before we were about to be consumed by the fiery beast we swerved away and soared upward and straight towards the door.

I screamed, fear engulfing me. The fiery serpents getting closer and closer, the intense heat making my skin feel like it was being boiled. I held onto Potter, not wanting to fall off the broom. And then suddenly I was on the cold stone ground, sucking in the fresh air and coughing my lungs out from all the smoke. I looked at my surroundings and saw that Granger and Weasley had saved Goyle, for that I was thankful, but where was Crabbe?

“C-Crabbe,” I managed to choke out. “C-Crabbe...”

“He’s dead,” Ron said harshly, and I stayed silent, reanalyzing everything that had happened.

My heart was beating furiously in my chest, I was drenched, my lungs hurt, and my body felt weak and burnt.I looked up at my saviors and gave them a silent thank you. They had saved me, the three people I hated the most, who I had made fun of and ridiculed for over six years, had saved my life. From that day forward, they had my respect and...gratitude.

“Draco get up.” Blaise said nudging me awake, I jumped in shock, but Blaise didn't notice. “We’re here.”

I blinked my eyes, trying to focus my view. I looked around the compartment and saw that there was only Blaise left, he was already in his school robes. My heart was beating fast and my forehead was covered in sweat, reminding me of the nightmare i had that was really a memory. I stood up slowly, trying to calm my nerves.

“Is that why you look so tired Draco? Nightmares of what happened keeping you up?” Blaise asked me, his voice serious. His eyes showed concern.

I nodded my head, not trusting my voice. He nodded his head in understanding.

“I think we all are going mental.” Blaise said, chuckling.

He threw something at me. I looked down at what i caught and saw that it was my robes.

“You should go change before we get off.” Blaise told me, a kindness in his voice that i never heard before. Maybe he was right, maybe we were all going mental. “I’ll wait for you outside. Goyle and Nott are waiting also.”

I nodded my head and both of us exited the compartment and headed two different ways.

**
I walked into the main entrance of Hogwarts, memories consuming me. Was it only a few months ago that this place was basically in shambles? Was it only a few months ago that we lost so many of our own? Was it only a few months ago that altered us all?

“Looks like Hogwarts is up and running. Good to know that this place survived, is it odd to say that it feels like I'm home?” Blaise asked no one in particular.

I mentally agreed with him. It felt right to be here again, it felt right to be in the place where we all grew up, and it felt right that we were able to redo our last year and finally be teenagers without the worries and fears of our previous year. The thought stunned me so much that i stopped walking. We were all finally going to be able to live and live freely. A small smile spreading over my face.

“You okay Draco?” Blaise asked me, a question on his face, having stopped in his tracks to turn and look at me. Nott and Goyle having already left us behind to enter the great hall.

“It just feels good to be home.” I finally said with a smile.

A smile spread over Blaise’s face. He walked over to me and slapped his hand on my back.

“I'm beginning to think that the great Slytherin prince has become soft.” Blaise said in a teasing voice. I scoffed at him and that sent him in hysteria. I managed not to punch him square in the jaw and instead walked into the dining room with him at my side.

“I’ll hex you to bits if you tell anyone what i said, Zabini.” I told him, glancing at him in my perepheral vision. He nodded his head but continued to chuckle.

**
“Silence!” Headmistress Mcgonagall said aloud, instantly the room went quiet. “First of all I would like to say welcome back to our returning seventh years. I know this year has changed you drastically and many of you have changed, whether you show it or not. The war has altered every one of you. We have lost quite a few of our own, but I want you to know that they wont be forgotten. I would like to have a moment of silence for those who have passed.”

I looked around the dining room and saw everyone sitting still. No one dared to move. I heard sniffles and people crying. The silence seemed to drag on, until Headmistress Mcgonagall began to speak once more.

“I would also like to say to our returning seventh years that this is your chance for a new life, a second chance to correct your previous wrongs and to finally set aside your differences and truly become one with your peers. That is why I have decided along with the staff to re-sort all of you.”

Instantly the room exploded in chatter, i however sat still, listening, waiting.

“Silence, students, silence!” Headmistress Mcgonagall said, managing to quiet the room once more. “The sorting hat will once again determine where you will be placed.” Suddenly the stool and sorting hat appeared next to her, a roll of all our names also appearing in her hand. She then began to read off the names, the students coming up to the stage, looking much like first years again. Time passed for awhile, some students being re-sorted into different houses while others remained in the same house. It was awhile before I started hearing familiar people being called up.

“Ronald Weasley!” Headmistress Mcgonagall shouted the red heads name. I couldn't help but chuckle as he slowly made his way in front of the room and to the stage. Headmistress Mcgonagall held the sorting hat in her hand and placed it on his head as he sat down on the stool.

“Another Weasley, I haven't had the pleasure for many years to be placed again atop a Weasley’s head. No more siblings or  children I take?” The sorting hat asked aloud a smile on it’s face, Weasley’s face turned a tomato red and Slytherin’s at my table chocked on their laughter. “Gryffindor!”

The Gryffindor table clapped loudly, everyone standing up for their war hero. What did they think? That one of the Golden Trio would be a slytherin? Everyone was becoming mad.

“Hermione Granger!” Headmistress Mcgonagall loudly, reading the list. Yet no one stepped forward. The room once again erupted in silent chatter as everyone, even the Slytherin’s and myself, looked around for the mudblood. But she was nowhere to be seen. I noticed Potter whispering something in the Weasley’s ear and saw everyone at their table ask them where she was.

“Maybe Granger decided not to come back.” Blaise said thoughtfully. “But I don't know why she wouldn't, she’s a war hero after all. And none of us, I believe would go and tease her anymore."

I shrugged my shoulders, not really showing that I cared when I really did. It was just weird that she wasn't here.It wasn't like Granger to not show up, let alone not show up to school. Everyone was definitely going mad.

"I never thought I would see the day when the know-it-all would ditch school." Nott said aloud, earning a few laughs at his comment.

“Quiet, quiet, settle down!” Headmistress Mcgonagall said, yet again managing to control everyone. The room was once again silent and everyone waited for her to speak. “My mistake, I forgot that Miss Granger won’t be returning until later on. Continuing on, Harry Potter!”

Potter stood up and walked up to the stage. He slowly sat down and the sorting hat was placed on top his head.

“Mr.Potter, it is always an honor. I see you have accomplished many things, great things,  during your time at Hogwarts, I hope you continue to succeed. I guess my choice the first time was the correct one, Gryffindor!” The hat said with a smile.

The Gryffindor’s, Ravenclaw’s, Hufflepuff’s, along with several Slytherin’s who had fought with Potter during the war, stood up and cheered for him. Absentmindedly I stood up too, clapping for the boy-who-lived, for the boy who saved my life and changed my views. Sure I was still the same insufferable, arrogant git, but I had more positive views on life and I wasn't afraid to express them. Following my lead a few dozen more Slytherin’s stood and clapped. Along them being Zabini, Goyle, Nott, and surprisingly Pansy. It was official, we were all mental.

When the room finally quieted down and a red faced Potter returned to his seat, with his girlfriend smiling at him and giving him a hug, Headmistress Mcgonagall continued. Her eyes a bit watery, a smile on her face. Behind her the rest of the professors also had a shocked and happy expression on their faces.

“Blaise Zabini!” The Headmistress continued on, her voice cracking a little.

“Wish me luck.” Zabini said to me as he got up and strutted towards the front of the room. Once seated the sorting hat was placed on top his head. Unknowingly I sat up straighter, listening intently.

“Zabini is it? Yes, I remember you. Your mind was always so put out of order, but your values and morals were always drilled in your mind, no doubt by your parents. But i can see, oh yes i do see young Mr. Zabini. You have changed greatly over the years, the war finally changing you entirely. Where to put you, where to put you. Slytherin? You would like that eh? Hufflepuff? No you’re too rough for them. Ravenclaw? You are intelligent, but are you smart enough to compete with the most logical of wizards? Or what of Gryffindor? Your rival since I sorted you so many years ago.” The sorting hat said, a thoughtful look on it’s face. Blaise just sat still, waiting. “I know where to put you. Consider this your second chance at a new life young Mr. Zabini, don't ruin it. Gryffindor!”

And just like that everyone at our slytherin table went rigid. Blaise looked at me with no expression but i knew him well enough that he was on edge, and scared, maybe even a bit excited. I looked down at my table, everyone just staring at Zabini with wide eyes, a confused look on their faces, as if they had heard the hat speak parseltongue.

Finally the Gryffindor’s began clapping, Potter and Weasley starting it off, everyone else following their lead. I saw Blaise’s shoulders relax and a smile on his face as he walked towards his new table, his new house, and his new life. Could we still be friends even if he was a Gryffindor now? Would i want to be friends with a Gryffindor? I should’ve known that he had changed, I already saw the signs.

“Draco Malfoy!” Headmistress Mcgonagall said my name, bringing me out of my thoughts.

Silence then spread over the crowd as i got up and walked towards the sorting hat and my new fate, if i had one. I didn't bother to look  at anyone as i walked, I kept my eyes focused ahead and my face expressionless. I put on my signature smirk when i did glance at my table, just to show them that I, Draco Lucius Malfoy, was indeed the same person and would not get moved to a new house. I sat down gracefully and the hat was placed on my head.

“Draco Malfoy, I can see in your mind your doubts, your worries, and your fears. You along with many others have also been changed by the war and years of darkness. Don’t let your past actions determine your future young Mr. Malfoy. Don’t make the same mistakes twice. You have a surprising future in front of you...” The sorting hat stated, trailing off. I however kept my face passive and uncaring at it’s words, and kept my eyes focused on the slytherin flags that were above my table. “The Slytherin prince can only exceed when planning his many schemes in his chamber, Slytherin!”

My table erupted with applause and i put yet another smirk on my face as i strutted back to my original seat. I knew I wouldn’t be moved into another house, I was indeed the Slytherin prince for a reason. Fellow Slytherin’s congratulated me as i walked passed them, but I just continued to walk on by not giving them a second glance. As i retook my seat I couldn't help but replay the sorting hat’s words in my mind. For some odd reason, it’s words put me on edge.
