Chapter 4

Saturday! Time to breathe a sigh of sweet relief. I woke up at around 10 am. I stretched and sat up. I ran to the door and listened to see if anyone was up. I heard my parents talking quietly and secretly under their breaths, but they were there. I prepared myself for the freezing tiles, I looked around the hall. It was really white, white was her favourite colour, because it was peaceful, she over-used it in our house and at least three quarters of each room was covered in white. I told my mother that it would make the house look cold and it would be hard to clean and it would be plain. So, she added a dash of colour here and there. In this part of the hallway were lillies and a large tapestry of a landscape of a meadow. I touched my toe off one of the tiles, I shivered and then ran downstairs. The cold tiles of the hallway made me scurry across the hall I curled on the soft brown couch in front of the large flat screen T.V. A small white bundle of a dog-Daisy- jumped up beside me. I pat her head. I was watching the legendary Friends. I was in mid-"side splitting laughter" mode when there was a knock on the door, throught the large double doors, I could see Josh, in his clean jeans and black hoodie, who went to answer the door, A cold wind swept through the house, pricking at my bare arms and sweeping back my hair. My light pyjamas didn’t help. All Brandon’s family walked through the house and into the kitchen, I ran upstairs and dressed in skinny jeans and went down stairs. They brought their dog Tiger, Daisy was cowering under the table. I ran over to the HUGE dog,  that was probably taller than me when he was on his back paws. Which admittedly wasn’t that hard... I wasn’t tall

“Hey puppy!” I squealed the dog ran towards me with a wagging tail. Daisy walked behind him too. I pet them both. After a while of trying to force them to share their toys, they were friends. Playing tug-of-war, I left them and sat at the table with the two families. It was all boring “grown-up talk” I excused myself and went back to the dogs. Brandon came too. He sat beside me on the step leading from the wooden porch to the garden. We watched the dogs. I got up and ran across the garden and picked the toy they were playing with, being careful of sharp teeth. I raced up the garden, kicking off my slippers which were slowing me down, Tiger barked, playfully and Daisy yapped at me pouncing around my feet, making me stumble. Brandon watched and smiled with his arms resting on his knees.

“Bran, catch!” I threw the toy across the yard, he caught it easily, the dogs raced towards him

“Jeez!” he exclaimed and jumped to the other side of the garden. He tossed it to me. I ran in circles, laughing. We repeatedly tossed the toy between us, playing piggy in the middle. The dogs gazed and followed the air-born toy. It was hilarious. I ran with the toy in my hand, Brandon came and ran beside me. Daisy ran in front of me, I let out a scream and tripped, Brandon, tried to stop it by grabbing my shirt, he fell on top of me. He knocked the wind out of me. He was so close, I couldn’t see anything else. His throat moved. I coughed and tried to breath

   “Brandon...?”

   “Yeah?” he smiled

“You’re crushing my lungs” I gasped

   “What?!” he barked incredulously

“Oh, I’m sorry! Did I knock some brain cells out of you when I knocked you over?!” I said sarcastically “Get the hell off of me!” I coughed out, he looked surprised and got to his knees and backed away, obviously not the usual reaction he got from girls. I sat up, trying to catch my breath.

“Sorry!” he said helping me up. I smiled and nodded; glad he ignored my rude comment. I took his warm, strong, steady hand and walked inside. He got me a glass of water-knowing exactly where everything was, like his second home- and watched me as I drank it, I didn’t realize how thirsty I was. Our parents had moved to the living room. I grabbed a biscuit from the plate that had been laid out.
