Roman’s apartment is all wood floorings and high ceilings, with shiny marble and empty space. It’s beautiful and sad all at once. He leads me into the living room and gestures for me to sit down on a leather couch. He makes me food, drinks, shows me where the washroom is. But mostly he just lets me be.

“You can stay here until you feel okay enough to go back,” he tells me.

I nod off on his couch, the after effects making me feel tired. When I wake up, Roman’s carrying me down the stairs to take me home.
