I felt someone shove me back, my eyes shut tight. I felt rather than saw a pair of wings spread wide In front of me. My eyes snapped open wide, someone with large wings was spreading her arms wide in a defensive manner. The shadow roared, shaking the walls of the cave, waking everyone."get out of here now!" Our protector screamed at us, and we happily obliged, bolting out of the cave. We ran downstream this time, keeping with the river.

The slippery slope made it harder for us to run, but we found an old hollowed log. Peter looked like he had a brain wave.i could already guess."no way Peter...""it's the fastest way outta here, get on guys! Conor, give me a hand." We all scrambled on the log, Conor and Peter pushing us deeper into the water.

Slow at first, the current pushed us to go faster, until we were steadily speeding along. My knuckles white from clinging on, I shivered in the icy water."this is kinda like the log ride ya know," chris joked, and I couldn't help but smile."only difference is we're paddling for our lives." Conor contradicted, and the two started arguing. The rest of us laughed at them. Maybe this wasn't so bad, maybe we were ok for awhile. My thoughts were interrupted by a sudden push in the current, rocks appearing around us."they're rapids! Hang on guys!" Ali shouted over the rushing of the rapids.

Clinging to the log, it smashed into various rocks before flipping under. The icy deep bitterly shook me awake, I kicked to push the log upright again.Just barely pulling myself up, I heard the girls screaming and they clung to me. The boys could only watch in terror. Turning, I saw we were headed directly for a waterfall! Shaking from both fear and the cold, I hugged my friends close as we toppled over the edge. "I knew this was a bad idea!" i screamed as my stomach lurched, I lost my grip of everyone, we plummeted down. My lungs shouted out a silent scream, the fall lasting a lifetime.

The water sucked us up with a loud sploosh,my head throbbing at the impact. Coughing the water from my lungs, I pulled Ali up while stumbling on the slimy riverside. Looking around, I couldn't even see where the others had washed up."Ali, you ok?" I asked my coughing friend. She gave me a weak smile"well, lets never do that again." I laughed briefly."great, now we're separated from everyone. At least the suns rising."

Ali and I turned to look at the colours dancing across the sky. I sighed."well, we'd better find the others, lets go Ali...Ali? You ok?" She was looking across the lake in horror. I looked as well, seeing a figure in the distance, it had large wings and was walking across the water to us. I took a cautious step back, pulling Ali and myself behind a bush.

The figure continued to walk to us, I soon guessed it was a girl. She was in ripped denim shorts and a white singlet, a stupidly long scarf wrapped around her neck, her long silver hair flowing around her. She had a scary sort of beauty that drew the eye, yet made you squirm with unease. She reached our side of the river bed, looking down. Damn, our footprints gave away our position."you know your not in the best hiding place, I could come at you from any angle."she called to us. I looked at Ali, who was shaking her head. I whispered to her" I'll check if she's trustworthy, if anything goes wrong, you run got it? Don't look back and find the others." Ali was about to protest, when I frowned and shook my head.

Stepping out of the bush, I saw the unknown girl smirk."so you've decided to be brave have you? How noble. You've got no need to fear me, I'm well fed at the moment." I shot her a confused look." You saved us, why?""it's not often you meet newcomers here in this domain, besides, us Windigo have a grudge against the kanima. I'm not going to eat you Ali, you can come out." Alarmed, I wondered how she knew where Ali was hiding."just what are you?" I asked."I'm hazel, and I'm a windigo."
