THE BULLET SHOT THROUGH MY CHEST. I slammed against the ground as if God had struck me with his giant palm. The white hot pain was unbearable. It felt as if someone was holding a blowtorch to me and my skin was melting. The front of my dress was sodden with my blood and my gaze was blurry and unfocused.

The stormy grey clouds grumbled above me and rain splattered down on my face. It was cool against the burning sensation running fast through my body.

The gunfire was similar to thunder; deafening and unrelenting. There were indistinctive cries and fearful shouts.

Delirious with pain and teeth clamped over my mouth to stifle my moans, I tried hoisting myself up. My semiautomatic was still in my hand and I attempted to focus. I squeezed, my vision darkened. I don't know where I fired. I intended for the moving spot on the second floor of the church but my vision was discoloured and stained with black spots. I couldn't make anything out. I collapsed, the gun falling out of my hand.

Irvin had been shot. Giant was injured or dead? James was... I couldn't concentrate any longer. The sounds of death collecting bodies became a buzz in the background.

It was difficult to breathe. I felt myself slipping away and –
