Daughter of Calypso

After her encounter with Jack, Serenity did not go back to sleep. She stayed on deck, staring out at the sea, feeling it pull on her. Several times she forgot the reason she was on the ship and nearly dived into the ocean, but her thoughts of Beckett always reminded her: Serenity had to kill Beckett. She had to keep him from taking over the seas, her seas, and making them unsafe for any creature that loved the ocean.

“Your thoughts be dark tonight,” said a familiar voice behind her.

Serenity did not bother to turn around for she knew it was Tia Dalma who had spoken.

“Yes,” Serenity said. “I have many dark things to think about.”

Tia Dalma approached the railing and stood beside Serenity. There was silence.

After a while, Serenity became aware that Tia Dalma was staring intently at her.

She turned to face Tia Dalma and said, “What?”

“You have grown into such a beautiful woman,” Tia Dalma said tearfully. “I could not have given you a better childhood.”

“What are you talking about..?” Serenity said quietly, but she thought she might already know.

“Twenty-three years ago, a man come to me,” said Tia Dalma. “He wanted to know how to have control a da sea. I was foolish, then, and I told him. He was clever. He put the pieces together and figured out what I am…”

“…Calypso,” Serenity breathed.

“Yes… I am Calypso,” said Tia Dalma, staring at the sea with longing in her eyes. “That night, the man took something I did not want to give.

“I am not innocent, chil’, but I might as well have been for what he done to me. He took something precious from me, and gave me something even more precious in return. But I knew that this precious thing would turn into a monster if it stayed in my charge, so I had to give it up.”

“What did he give you?” Serenity asked.

“A daughter.”

“…Me?”

Tia Dalma turned to look at Serenity and, in that moment, Serenity saw herself in the woman’s face. Her own skin was not as dark, but it still had the same exotic and beautiful features as Tia Dalma’s.

“Who was my father?” asked Serenity.

“Lord... Cutler Beckett…” Tia Dalma said the words as though they were hard to form.

Serenity felt even more hatred for Beckett swimming to the surface. The man she hated was really her father, but she would never name him as her father.

“That man is not my father,” Serenity snarled, making Tia Dalma smile.

“I am glad to hear you say that,” said Tia Dalma, “because it means you are more mine than his.”

“You abandoned me!” Serenity glared.

Tia Dalma flinched away, though Serenity could not understand why.

“I had no choice,” she begged. “If I had been the one to raise you, you would have grown up knowing my hatred for men. You would have become inhumane. You would be merciless… evil.”

Serenity’s anger evaporated at Tia Dalma’s words.

“You are right,” she said softly. “You could not have given me a better childhood. Captain Seawater was the best father you could have given me, and he made me who I am. I am not like you, Calypso.”
