Harry gave James the marauders map when he was 12. Although Harry was hesitant to and only told James to use it if necessary. Of course James ignored what his father said and used it with Louis and Fred for mischief. He used it everyday without being caught even though he didn't have the invisibility cloak which was passed on to Albus and Lily. He did get caught though once in his seventh year by Alice. She didn't get mad though or scolded him. She just simply asked him to follow her into the girls bathroom. She spoke in parseltongue and the chamber of secrets was opened again. James was completely and utterly stunned. Who knew Alice could speak parseltongue? Later on she showed him how to put the chamber if secrets onto the marauders map. Now the chamber was cleaned out and the houses would have secret house parties in there and the teachers wouldn't know where the students went.
