Nathan's POV
I slammed the front door shut, placing my keys on the hook above the entry way and kicked my shoes off.
It was oddly quiet. Most of the time, re-runs of hockey games or just some odd TV shows were heard. I was curious as to where my girlfriend was. She was usually greeting me by now.
"(Y/N)?"
Nothing.
I sighed and ran a hand over my face. I hope she wasn't gone. We had lost our first game of the season and I really just wanted to eat pizza and cuddle.
I went to walk into our bedroom, but stopped when I heard something drop. It had come from our dining room. When I swung open the door, I almost laughed at the sight in front of me.
(Y/N) was sitting criss-cross on the table. She was in a pair of plaid pajama shorts and a long sleeved shirt, her hair up in a crazy bun. What got to me was the papers scattered everywhere on the floor. I mean... everywhere. Not an inch of the wood floor wasn't covered in some sheet of paper. I knelt down and picked one up, seeing it was some sort of math worksheet.
"(Y/N)?" I spoke, my voice soft.
Her body tensed visibly.
My heart raced as I reached her, preparing for some sort of outburst. I took a step in front of her, reaching out and moving a strand of hair out of her face. She moved back, head still down.
"I'm stupid, Nate,"
My eyes went wide and my jaw dropped immediately.
"What? (Y/N) oh my gosh. You're not stupid! What the hell- where did that come from?" I placed my hands on her cheeks.
She once again moved away, still not looking up at me. Her breathing started getting ragged.
"I just- I'm stupid! I can't do any of this! I do all I can to make it through my classes. I pay attention to every single little word they say, but- but I just can't wrap my head around the work! I don't understand!" she cried, shoulders shaking
"Baby-"
"This is making me feel like I'm incapable of doing anything! There's so much of it! It's everywhere! I don't understand... I don't understand," she whimpered.
My hands gripped her thighs, pulling her off the table and into me. Her shaking hands held the fabric of my jacket tightly. I had my arms wrapped around her as tightly as I could without hurting her and I sat, rubbing her back, comfortingly.
Soon, her body stopped shaking and her cries finally started quieting down.
"Nathan..."
"You're okay. I get it, alright? You're under stress. You needed to get things out of your system. I understand what it's like. You help me during my breakdowns all the time. I was waiting for the time you needed me the most. I was starting to think you didn't feel at all," I joked, emitting a small giggle.
"Thank you, Nathan. I just..." she breathed out deeply "school is literally killing me. I haven't done anything even remotely fun in weeks because of how much work I've had to do,"
"Well, I have something we could do..."
Her eyebrows raised at the comment and I laughed, shaking my head. I held out my hand and she smiled, placing hers in mine and interlocking our fingers.
She hopped off the table and I lead her into the living room. I gently pushed her back onto the couch and winked at her, walking over to the TV. I grabbed the remote and turned the screen on. I clicked the Xbox on and grabbed two controllers.
Her laugh made my heart flutter. I turned to her and walked over, plopping down next to her. She threw her legs over my lap and took a controller from my hand.
"Only NHL16 can put you in a better mood," I laughed.
"Well, you helped me a lot," she spoke, jumping up so she was sitting on her legs instead "but I'll be all better when I KICK YOUR ASS!"
