Dragons Ahead! The beginning of the end.

Chapter 10: The big surprise

The next day I woke up early. I don't really know why, probably because of the surprise hiccup had for me. I walked down the stairs, and took my rod. I opened the door and walked outside. The sun was just rising, and it started to become warmer. I walked down the road, heading for the great hall. Yesterday, while hiccup and I made a trip around the island, I saw a good fishing spot down at the sea. I walked there, and could already hear fish splashing. I walked down the beach, and came to the fishing spot. No one was there, and I started fishing. It was a great fishing place, and in five minutes I had two salmons. I carried them back home, and put them on the counter. I walked outside again, and went to my farm. The chickens had laid tree eggs which I picked while the chickens, insulted as they were, ran outside to go and pick some seeds. I took a bucket and started to milk the yak. Meanwhile my sisters woke up, and they came down the stairs. Once finished milking, i took the eggs and the milk. I walked inside, only to see my sisters wide awake and fully dressed, waiting at the table. "Hey guys, why up so early?" "Says who?" Miranda responded. Having poured some milk in three goblets I put the milk on the counter, next to the fish. "Well girls, the fish is on the counter, and I have tree eggs. Would you like to make the sea food again?" I asked. "Why not do it yourself?" Jacoline said, clearly feeling way to tired to bake, or move at all. "I have an appointment with Hiccup." I said back. "Good luck!" Miranda yelled after me as I ran out of the door. "Thanks, you guys too!" I responded, waved, and I was on my way once again, my mind set on the surprise hiccup had promised me.

It was about eight minutes walking from our house. When I arrived, Hiccup was already waiting for me. "Good morning!" Hiccup said happy. "I saw you walking to the beach, caught something?" "Yes yes, two salmons! My sisters are making breakfast now." I said, pride sounding in my voice. "Good! Would you come in the academy please?". When I got in the academy, all the dragon riders were waiting for me. "Well guys, let me introduce you to our new friend, John. Please introduce you and your dragons you guys." Astrid started. "Well, my name is Astrid, and I ride a Deadly Nadder. They are really fast, sweet and loyal. They are known for the ability to shoot spines from their tail, and create this super hot flame, that can melt rock in an instant!" Next up was Fishleggs. "Hi John, I am Fishleggs, and I ride an Groncle. Groncles are the most sweet, loving dragons in the whole world! But also they are tough! Meatlugg here can shoot a lava blast!" Before the last words had left his mouth, a guy stepped in front of me and begun: "Hey John, my name is Tuffnut. I am the most handsome of the twins. I ride a zippleback... well.. Half a dragon. I have to share it with my sister, but this head is mine. He is called Barf ..." Once the word "Sister" was said Ruffnut shot into action. "That would be me! Well, as my total uncool brother just said I ride a zippleback. They are really good in blowing up things!" "Yeah!" Tuffnut continued "This head breathes gas that gets you loopy, totally cool! You should try it some time!" "This one ignites it, like a major explosion!" Ruffnut added "What? Am I up? Sure. Hey, I am Snotloud. I ride a Monstrous Nightmare, the most lethal dragon in the known world! They can set themselves on fire, head to tail!" "Well, now it's just up to me, I guess. I am hiccup, and I ride a Nightfury. The Nightfury is on the top of all the dragons. As you may have noticed, he is pretty fast too!" After processing this all and writing something down every now and then ("Look meatlug, I like him already!") I said: "Wow, I am pretty impressed. How did you all get your dragon?" Hiccup answered before anyone else could, and they certainly tried! "Well, we bonded with them. Now here is the surprise. You can pick one egg, and let it hatch. After that, your dragon will bond with you, and you will have your own dragon!" I was stunned for a second there. "My... My own dragon?" "Yup, just get on toothless with me!" Looking up, a saw all the dragon riders beaming down at me. Without noticing I had fallen to my knees, and I scrambled back up. "I am sure you will do just fine out there John" Astrid said comforting. "Yeah, I think... perhaps" I muttered back. Hiccup and I took off and flew to sort of a volcano island. In the middle of that volcano were different platforms, all stuffed with eggs. "So, witch dragon would you like?" Hiccup said when he landed on a huge platform in the middle of the volcano. "Well... I liked the Deadly Nadder..." We flew to a platform with spiky eggs. Couldn't be someone else's eggs... I thought. "Now you just have to pick one" Hiccup said. I looked all over the place, looking for.. Well I don't know what exactly. Something different, yet normal. Suddenly I noticed it. In the far back there was a medium sized egg, a blue one. Almost as deep blue as the seas outside, yet as light as the skies above. "That one!" I said. "Toothless? Would you mind?" Hiccup said. Hiccup got on the back of toothless, and took the egg. "Here you go!" Hiccup said, while he gave the egg to me. It was a beauty. It had blue spikes, and the shell itself was yellow mixed with blue, and a little dot of grey. "Now let's hatch it!" Hiccup said. "How? I am not going to sit on it for two weeks! Have you seen the spikes on this thing? No way!" "No, dragon eggs have their own way of hatching." Hiccup said. "Just hop on, and you will see!" We flew to the lowest platform, in the middle of which was a hole in which the lava stood high, up to the edge. Above that lava was some kind of a weird stone. "Now lay the egg on the stone." Hiccup said. "Why? Are you gonna cook me breakfast?" "Just do it" hiccup said laughing. He hung the stone on a chain, put the egg in it, and after that he slowly dipped the egg in the lava. After that he got it out again. The stone was really hot, and little cracks appeared on the egg. The cracks became bigger and bigger, until they were all over the egg. Suddenly, a little nose appeared out of the egg. It sniffed a bit, and got back inside the egg. Once again the nose appeared, but this time, also the little horn was visible. The nose was blue, and on the tip of his nose was a grey spot. The little dragon pushed and pushed against the eggshell. Slowly, gradually, one eye appeared. It was a yellow eye, and it stared at me. I could hear the little dragon struggle and wanted to help "No, you have to let him do it himself." Hiccup said. I watched the little dragon get free. His little head came out, one spike at a time. The spikes were eggshell white, and his little face was blue, and white from beneath. After his head got free, the rest soon followed. One leg came out, and pushed the shell away, and there it was, my little dragon. "Now, hold your hand out like this." Hiccup said, and held his hand out to toothless, with his eyes closed. Toothless came towards him, and put his nose against his hand. Hiccup opened his eyes, and said:"Now it's your turn bud!" I closed my eyes, not believing I was about to do this. I reached out my hand, and waited. I felt the little dragon sniff my hand. Suddenly, his warm nose touched my hand. I opened my eyes and saw the little fellow, eyes closed. By the love of Thor! That dragon thrusts me! "Hey buddy, how are you?" I said while petting the little fellow. "Now, all you have to do left, is give your new bud a name" "Ok, what about Sharptooth?" "Perfect! Let's take your buddy home!" I took Sharptooth, and climbed on toothless. We took off, and after five minutes we were back in Berk. We flew in the academy. "I knew it!" Astrid said. "Well guys, give the stuff!" she said laughing. "Wait, you didn't bet again did you?" "Yup, and a good one too Hiccup! Two chickens, five bottles of yak milk, and three salmons!" The other riders gave their stuff complaining to Astrid. "Now let see the little Nadder!" Astrid said. Sharptooth was on my shoulder, and watched everyone. "What a beauty! What is it? A boy of a girl?" Astrid asked. "Well... to be honest, I don't know..." I said. "Let me take a look at it" Astrid said. "After all, I am the pro on Nadders" she said while she took Sharptooth. "Yup, definitely a boy!" she said, and she gave Sharptooth back. "You should go home now, your dragon is hungry!" hiccup said. I walked home, and opened the door. "Girls, I have a surpriseeee..." "What is it, what is it?" The girls stopped cooking, and walked to the front of the living room. "Well, show it already!" Miranda said. "Ok, but don't freak out..." A little Nadder head came from behind my back. "Is that a... Dragon???" Jacoline said. "Yup, Sharptooth! He is my newest pet." my sisters didn't say a word. Jacoline opened her mouth and said:" exually... He is pretty cute..." "Exactly what I was thinking" Miranda said. Sharptooth climbed on my shoulder, and looked at the girls. "It's ok Sharptooth! They are friends! Now let's get you something to eat" As though the little devil could read minds he hopped on the table and sat down, looking at me as though saying "Bring it on!" "Well, you brought a fish too much" Jacoline said. I walked to the counter, and took the salmon. Sharptooth was still in the table, and looked at me. "Come here Sharptooth, I have something for you!" He walked toward me, and I held the fish in front of him. He took it, and swallowed it in one piece. After that my sisters and I got to the table and started to eat. Sharptooth climbed on me, and laid on my lap, and fell asleep. It felt weird, but I felt a special connection with him. One thing was for sure. No one was happier then I was.
