~ Chapter 22 ~

The sound of my footsteps against the concrete stairs echoed while I ran up towards the hospital’s roof. My heart gradually started to pump faster and everything went into slow motion. Once I got to the top door, the world seem to pause for all of three seconds before I heard the loud bang. Lexi. She started shooting before I even got onto the roof! Never trust her to be patient...

Stealthily slamming the door open I instantly spotted two men on the roof’s edge. My UMP bounced in my hands as I pulled the trigger and one of the men dropped onto his back. Blood leaked out from his stomach and pooled around his body as he started shaking uncontrollably. His buddy looked down at him and then up at me with a grimace, but it changed quickly into a scowl when he raised his Uzi at me. I aimed my gun at him too, but it was already too late. A loud boom filled my ears and a bullet pierced his chest. He instantly fell to the ground motionless.

“I told you I had your back,” Lexi stated in a matter-of-fact tone as she came up beside me holding a pistol.

“Geez, I actually thought he was going to shoot me! Thanks for killing him at the latest moment possible,” I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

“No problemo!” she played along. I shook my head in disapproval, but she just kept smiling at me like the Cheshire Cat. A loud shot rang out and I quickly looked to the left of me at a wall. There was a very noticeable bullet hole indented in it only a few inches away from my body. That asshole almost shot me! Instantly pulling my guard back up, I lifted my gun ready to shoot anything that comes my way.

“Lexi, I take the right and you take the left,” I whispered, but when looked over at her, she was gone. Where the hell did she go? She tends to that quite often. Show up by surprise and then leave conspicuously.

Bursts of gunfire from the left got me quickly moving on my feet again. I headed straight for a small piece of cement that stood about three feet up from the ground. Lexi’s back was up against it and she was crouching on the floor. Shots still rang out and pieces of the wall chipped off from whoever was trying to kill my sister. This jackass is going down!

Lexi turned around so she was facing the wall and slyly looked above it pointing her gun at the man. She pulled the trigger and the man’s gun fell to the ground. He let out a loud grunt before looking up and finding Lexi only a few feet in front of him, her gun raised to shoot just in between his eyebrows.

“Move an inch and I’ll shoot,” she threatened. The man’s eyes went wide as he raised both his hands up in surrender. I came out of my hiding place and walked over to the gun he dropped on the floor while passing behind Lexi to go get it. There was a hole in the barrel deeming it useless. Nonetheless, I emptied the cartilage and dumped the bullets out onto the floor.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“George. Wait. There’s two of you?” he said looking dumbfounded.

“Naw, there’s four of us,” I joked but said it in a serious tone.

“What!?” he practically yelled in shock.

“I’m just kidding. Geez, calm down would ya?”

“Stop making conversation with him,” Lexi commanded.

“Lighten up Sis. He’s harmless; he’s about to die anyway.”

“Psh, no duh!”

Lexi suddenly threw her gun to the side toward me. “Hold that for me. Thanks,” she told me not even waiting for me to answer.

“What ar-” I started to ask, but was cut off by a scream that sounded like a battle cry coming from George. He had quickly reached down inside his shoe and took out a knife. Running full speed at Lexi with the knife pointed outward, he blindly slashed his knife left and right hoping to leave a scratch on my sister. But Lexi was too smart for that. The blade a few inches shy of her torso, she bent her back at a ninety degree angle just like in the Matrix movie and swiftly dropped low with her hands out behind her to catch her fall as she brought out her feet giving the man a good blow at the knees. He instantly fell backwards landing on his butt; he sat there vulnerable and obviously in pain since he was babying his knees and he was slightly leaning off to one side. Lexi quickly jumped back up onto her feet and kicked him full force in the face. George let out a tiny whimper before his head hit the cement. He was out cold.

“That was a no-brainer,” I stated.

“He definitely needs some training. Who would let a guy as inexperienced as him, go on a mission like this? Seriously?” she said shaking her head.

“Beats me,” I replied.

“Hey, help me drag his body downstairs. He’s heavier than he looks.”

“Why don’t we just kill him?”

“Cause, we’re taking him hostage,” she plainly stated.

Lexi held onto his forearms and was, very slowly I might add, hauling his body towards the door. George’s fat ass was scraping against the concrete making an annoying scratching and crunching sound.

“Agh,” I whined plugging my ears. It wouldn’t hurt if he lost some weight, gosh!

“Help. Me.” Lexi was waiting for me to lift up his legs so we could move him downstairs faster and without his annoying butt noise. Man, being an assassin is such hard work! Attaching the guns to strap on my back, I lifted up his legs and we both got him to the fifth floor. While I stayed with George at the stair doors, Lexi went to her hospital room to gather our bags before coming back and dragging George all the way down to the last floor. I can already hear sirens outside as police barge through the front door yelling threats at anyone still inside the building.

Thankfully, the stairwell leads to an underground parking garage. Good thing I parked my Lamborghini right next to the door; I wouldn’t be able to stand dragging George across the parking lot. I dropped his legs on the floor not giving a damn that I scraped his legs making them bleed slightly. He’s going to go through hell with Lexi once he wakes up anyway. My arms were hurting and they fell limply at my sides. I took my keys out from my pants pocket and pressed the unlock button. The car beeped signaling that the alarm was off. Pressing another button, the trunk popped open. In the background more sirens filled the air and even a couple of ambulances. Those men back there don’t deserve to live so why call in the paramedics?

Lexi lugged George to the trunk and took out a long string of rope from the back seat. After rapidly tying it around his wrists and ankles in a death row of knots, she dumped him in the trunk and locked it.

“Thanks so much for helping me,” Lexi remarked.

I chuckled in response, “My arms hurt. He’s so heavy!”

“Just drive us home,” she said in a tired voice.

“Yes, ma’am.”
