CHAPTER 18
LEI
Days passed and Shine could finally walk. Sa sobrang tuwa niya ay napasayaw pa siya sa harap namin ni tito Dan. She took tita Lora's hands and they danced with much delight that it brightened up the room.
"I can walk! I can dance! I can jump!"
Shine held her hand out to me while tita Lora did it with tito Dan kaya wala kaming choice kung 'di tanggapin ang alok nila na sumayaw. We all held hands and danced in circles. Our laughter filled the room.
I felt happy and at peace. Kahit wala ang mga totoong magulang ko, hindi ako nakaramdam na wala akong mga magulang at na nag-iisa ako dahil sa pamilya ni Shine. Tita and tito somehow became my parents, too, although I still feel shy in claiming that they treat me as their son.
Natapos ang pagsasayaw at pagtalon-talon namin nang sumenyas ng timeout si Shine. We laughed at her because she was the first to get tired. Pero kahit na gano'n ay inasikaso pa rin siya nina tita. They made her sit on her bed as tito gave her some water to drink while tita brought out a towel to wipe her sweat.
Hindi ko namalayan na napapangiti na ako habang pinapanood sila. Shine met my eyes and she beamed at me. She jumped out of her bed which startled tita and tito.
"Lei! Pawis ka rin, oh!" Mabilis ang lakad niya papunta sa 'kin. "Here," she said as she came closer to wipe the sweat on my forehead.
"A-Ah, Shine, kahit ako na..." Pigil na pigil ko ang sarili ko na mapahakbang paatras dahil alam kong mapapansin nilang lahat 'yun. And it would seem unnatural, because I had never stepped away from Shine whenever she got near.
"Nonsense! Ako na," pagpupumilit niya. "Huwag ka namang malikot, Lelei." She held my right shoulder with one of her free hands.
Shine calling me by that nickname did not help at all.
I gulped when Shine dabbed her towel on the sides of my face. Hindi ko maiwasang mapatingin sa kanya. Kahit pinunasan na siya ng pawis nina tita, may natira pa ring iilang butil nito sa gilid ng mukha ni Shine. My eyes focused on one of the sweat droplets that traveled down from her temples to her jawline and then down to her... neck.
My heart raced at how close we are and at how much of Shine's skin I am seeing. Nakakapanibago dahil dati ay wala lang sa 'kin ang mga bagay na ito...
"And the champion for this year's 50th basketball league is... BS Biology's Grim Greyhounds!"
Malakas ang tilian at palakpakan ng mga biology student at ng mga taong sumuporta sa kurso namin. Napuno ng ingay at confetti ang loob ng gym dahil ito ang pinaka-unang panalo ng BS Biology sa basketball league ng college namin. A lot of my peers were overjoyed that we proved to everyone that we're not only smart, but also good at sports.
