The world was wrapped in a blanket of clouds, pulling Vanessa deeper into the fog. Dark shapes were looming in the distance, but all Vanessa could focus on was her feet against the asphalt. Rocks digging into her skin, causing her to take small delicate steps. Lines painted on the pavement proved to her she was in the middle of the road. But what was she doing here and how did she get here?

Vanessa followed the white line, slowly stepping to not damage her feet more than she would have to. She needed to figure out how to get back to her apartment again. Had she fallen asleep? She didn't remember doing so.

Vanessa tried to listen to the surrounding sounds, but there was an eerie quiet settling in. Off in the distance in front of her, she saw glowing lights. Two small yellow orbs that seemed to be getting closer and closer as the seconds passed. No sound came from them, though.

She grabbed her ears and plugged them with her fingers, trying to see if they still worked. But nothing changed.

The lights drew closer to her, and before she could move out of the way, she realized what they were. Headlights.

Vanessa hunkered down in her body, preparing for the impact to send her flying at least twenty steps behind her, but when the lights finally grew so bright she couldn't see anything else, they disappeared.

A gust of wind tugs at her dress, pulling it behind her in the direction the car must have gone.

Was Vanessa dead?
