One

It was the first day of school and it had been a months since their parents had died. Twins Emma and Elena were finally ready to go to school and try to not be the sad girls who lost their parents and their brother Jeremy seemed to be doing okay but Emma cared more than Elena did so Jeremy preferred Emma. Elena and Emma walked down the stairs and their aunt Jenna was rushing around the kitchen as she usually did on a morning but this morning she was rushing quicker because she had a meeting and it was the first day of school.
"Toast girls?"
Jenna said with a smile on her face
"No thanks aunt Jenna I'll just get a coffee"
Emma said as she walked over to the coffee pot.
"It's all about the coffee now Jenna"
Elena said smiling. Elena walked over and stood beside Emma and Jeremy walked in. Emma smiled at him and he smiled back. Emma passed Jeremy a coffee and then turned around to make herself a coffee.
"Lunch money?"
Jenna said holding out three bills. Elena and Emma politely declined but Jeremy took all three
"Thanks Jenna"
Jeremy said as he walked out of the door.
"I have a meeting.... Now"
Jenna said as she grabbed her bags. Emma ran over and hugged her
"Good luck Jenna. We'll be fine don't worry you get to your meeting"
Emma said with a smile as she waved at Jenna who was rushing out of the door. Emma turned to Elena who had already left. Emma walked over to the window and saw Elena getting into Bonnies car and driving away. They used to all walk together but ever since Bonnie learnt to drive Emma had to walk alone. Emma walked to Caroline's and knocked on the door
"Is Caroline ready?"
Emma said with a smile
"Caroline. Emma's here."
Caroline's mom said as she turned around. Caroline hugged her mom and the walked past her to go to Emma. Caroline smiled and waved at her mom before her and Emma started walking to school.
"How are you Emma?"
Caroline said concerned
"I'm fine don't worry Care"
Emma said with a smile. Caroline smiled back and they talked for a while until they reached school then Caroline walked over to Elena and Bonnie leaving Emma alone once again. Emma followed Caroline and smiled at Bonnie.
"Hey Bonnie"
Emma said with a smile
"Oh hey Emma"
Bonnie said before turning back to Elena and talking to Elena again. Emma rolled her eyes and walked away. Emma walked into someone.
"I am so sorry"
Emma said quickly
"I really should watch where I'm going"
She added laughing a little
"Don't worry about. I'm Stefan by the way"
The boy said smiling
"I'm Emma"
Emma said smiling.
"I'll see you around"
Stefan said as he walked past Emma and walked away. Emma knew that he would probably meet Elena and ignore her but she was going to try to become Stefan's friend even if he ended up leaving her for Elena like everyone else did. Emma walked to History class and Stefan sat down beside her
"Hi Emma"
Stefan said with a smile
"Oh hey Stefan"
Emma said looking at him. Mr Tanner walked in and everyone went silent. Mr Tanner began talking
" Once our home state of Virginia joined confederacy in 1861, it created a tremendous amount of tension within the state. People in Virginia's northwest region had different ideals than those from the traditional deep south. Then Virginia divided in 1863 with the northwest region joining the union"
Mr Tanner said but Emma zoned out thinking about everything that had happened in the last few months but then she saw Stefan and Elena exchanging looks then she saw Bonnie texting Elena "HAWT-E. STARING @ U." Elena turned around again and smiled at Stefan before she turned around and started listening to Mr Tanner again. Stefan and Emma started passing notes to each other and Emma found out that Stefan had a brother but they haven't talked in years and Stefan found out that Elena and Emma were twins and they had a little brother called Jeremy. Finally it was the end of history class. It was the end of the day and Elena and Emma walked to their parents grave. They sat down in front of it and Emma sat looking at her parents grave before she went and sat beside it however Elena was writing in her diary. Elena wrote
"Dear diary, I made it through the day. I must have said, "I'm fine, thanks," at least thirty-seven times. And I didn't mean it once. But no one noticed. When someone asks, "How are you?" They really don't want an answer." A crow then appeared onto their parents gravestone and Emma turned around to look at the crow but she decided to ignore it.
"Okay. Hi, bird. That's not creepy or anything. Shoo!"
Elena said as she started waving her diary at the bird to make it leave and it did leave
"That's what I thought"
Elena said as she sat back down but the crow reappeared. Fog started to cover the ground and Elena and Emma stood up and they saw a man stood behind a tomb and they ran but Elena tripped. Elena stood up and Stefan was stood there. He waved at Emma but then his attention turned to Elena and Stefan and Elena had a conversation not even acknowledging that Emma was stood there with them.
"You okay?"
"Were you following me"
" No, I-a, uh, I-a just — I saw you fall."
"Uh-huh, and you just happened to be hanging out in a cemetery."
"I'm visiting. I have family here."
"Oh. Wow. Tactless. I'm sorry. It's the fog, It's making me foggy. And then back there, there was this - this bird, and it was all very Hitchcock for a second. That is the bird movie, right, the Hitchcock?...I'm Elena."
"I'm Stefan"
"I know. We have History together"
And English and French."
"Right."
Stefan pulled a leaf out of Elena's hair
"Thanks...Nice ring"
"Um, It's a family ring, yeah. I'm kinda stuck with it. It's weird, huh?"
"No, no. It's just, I mean, there are rings and then there's that."
"Did you hurt yourself?"
"Hmm?"
"Did you hurt yourself?"
" Oh, uh, I don't know."
Elena pulled up her pant leg and sees a cut gushing blood
"Oh! Would you look at that. That is not pretty."
Stefan turned around
"Are you okay Stefan?"
"You should go. Take care of that."
"Really, it's nothing."
Elena pulled her pant leg down and turned around but Stefan had disappeared.
"Where did he go?"
Elena said looking at Emma who was just as confused. Emma shrugged her shoulders and then they left the cemetery.
