Chapter Five

Suspicions

Drew Holiday

I stared at my hand... it was just my hand. The only thing unusual about my hand was the fact that it was ablaze. It felt hot and it stung, and only moments earlier had a massive shock spread through my entire arm. My friends looked at my cautiously.

'What was that?' Danny asked after the other guys finished their laps. I looked towards the bleachers and the change room doors, towards the area where Hailey had fled. There was something off about her, something that made me a little suspicious.

'She's weird.' I stated simply.

'No shit Sherlock,' Danny said rolling his eyes. 'I'm talking about what happened back there.' he said. I took a deep breath.

'She shocked me.' I said. Danny raised his eyebrow at me. I glanced at my hand, which was tingling furiously. 'My hand feels like it's on fire.' I said.

'Weird. Shock as in...' he said.

'Like electrical. Like... ZAP!' I said and he laughing.

'Dude. You're nuts!' He laughed, hardly choking out words as he struggled to breath.

'I honestly don't think it's me.' I said seriously. 'Something is up with her.'

'You think so?' Danny asked, breathing at a normal pace now.

'Definately.' I said, glancing over towards the change room doors once again. We continued to walk our final lap as I thought to myself. I had so much on my agenda right now. First I have to find my mate, then I have to become Alpha. I have to deal with Kristy every day and now I want to find out what's up with this Hailey chick. My life is so freaking stressful. I sighed as we made our way to the lunchroom after gym. I took my normal seat at the football/cheerleader table and listened to the mindless hum and idol chit-chat of the group.

'So, Kendra was telling me that Stacy is going to break up with Landon Waters because he cheated on her with Anna McDowell, but I totally think it's because she has the hots for Ryan,' Lana was saying as she played with her bleach blonde hair. All the football players were either listening, pretending to listen or having small sidebar conversations amongst themselves. I was finding myself drifting off, which I never used to do, but was finding myself doing a lot lately. I looked around the lunchroom, and my glance landed on a pair of familar scuffed up converse resting on a lunch table in the corner. They belonged of course to the very person invading my mind. She was sound asleep as she kicked back in her chair listening to her iPod. I played with my food as I watched her chest rise up and down calmly. There was just something about her I couldn't put my finger on. We were just too different. She suddenly got up and looked around dreamilly. She walked right into Andy Walberg who nearly flipped his lid.

'Watch it loser!' he said shoving her out of the way. I scoffed at her, as did everyone else at our table, yet something inside my chest twitched. She looked down and slouched out of the lunchroom, in her own little world. I watched her retreat from the crowd of people and into the empty halls.

'I hear she dates college guys,' Tammy said.

'Who?' I aksed confused.

'Her.' Tammy said cocking her head towards the door. 'Hailey Jane.'

'Oh...' I said. She dated college guys? No wonder she didn't give the guys at our school a second glance.

'Yeah right,' Kristy said, sounding extremely whiny and cocky. 'Although I wouldn't put it past her to be a slut, I saw her tattoo in gym class while she was stretching. She's such a freak.' she said. 'I bet she's some kind of weirdo animal lover.' She said running her fingers along her fur collar. One of my many pet peeves about Kristy is that she loved hunting and fur, and when you're half wolf that's not exactly a turn on.
