Chapter Four

Perplexed

Hailey Jane Rexler

I sighed. What a ridiculous idea! For who in the world would be Alpha without a mate! Oh dear! I would. Oh gosh, this is really stressful. I went out to the greenhouse and found my painting supplies in the cupboard. Underneath the piles of canvas I found a small paint box and some pencils. I grabbed a handful of art supplies and bath stuff and made my way to the clearing and shifted. I rolled my shoulders and they moved into the primal canine position I loved so much. I carried along my stuff wrapped up in my clothes. I weaved through the forest as the fresh air whipped at my face. Surely a snow white wolf would stick out somewhat, but no, I looked natural and at home, at peace with my surroundings. I came to a lake on the edge of the northern border and shifted back into my human form. I pulled out my bath supplies and slunk into the icy waters, the frigid temperature not phasing my naturally warm temperature, almost feverish really. I lathered my all natural strawberry-vanilla shampoo into my long brown hair and sighed as the subtle scent absorbed into my hair and skin. I loved it because if you tried really hard you could smell it, but otherwise it was utterly unnoticable.

I know I shouldn't be this close to the border, but it was suprisingly calm there. I pulled out my paint set after getting dressed and det up by the waters edge. I started painting the lake. Dabbing the different hues of blue up and around the water, and smearing the greenery on smoothly. As I finished the scene I bit at my lip, it was perfect, it looked exactly like the lake and the surrounding forest. But something was missing... but nothing was really. Subconciously, I started dabbing at the black paint, and soon enough I had smudged a dark black blob on the opposite shore of the lake.

'Shit!' I cursed looking at the black permanent mark on my now imperfect painting. What in the world had possesed me to do that? Then, my hand darted to the palette again and dabbed a couple more tiny black streaks. What the hell? I stared at the now blackish figure and realized it was taking a shape. I began to dab tiny amounts of black until the figure was complete. To finish off my odd spur of the moment addition, I dabbed at the artic blue paint and added two blue sparkling dots. It was a wolf, a pitch black wolf... and it was gorgeous. I didn't know where my image of the wolf came from, but now that it was there, my painting felt complete. I packed up my now dry painting and supplies in my clothes and shifted off home. I put my clothes back on and tiptoed into my home, and bumping into Lucy.

'Oh, hey Luce,' I said.

'What do you have there?' she asked pointing to the painting behind my back.

'Uh... just something I painted.' I said.

'Lemme see,' she grinned. For some perplexing reason she loved my paintings, I mean, what is that? They were horrible! She grinned at it. Lucy was my best friend. I didn't have any friends at school, so it was always a treat to come home to Lucy and her epic amazingness. 'Wow...it's beautiful... he's beautiful?'

'He?' I asked looking at the painting.

'Yes, he.' she said, pointing to the coal black wolf. 'Who is he?' I smiled for some reason.

'I don't know... I've never seen him before.' I said.

'He's just...wow...' she said running her fingers over the wolf.

'You have a mate Luce,' I reminded her. She smiled. Tanner was a sweet guy and she was totally in love with him.

'You need a mate,' she said turning to me.

'No.' I stated simply.

'Don't you even want a mate just a wee little bit?' she asked whilst pinching the air symbolizing a wee little bit.
