Chapter Three

Intruiged

Drew Holiday

'Where do you think she goes while she skips class?' I asked as we sat down in World History.

'Who?' Danny asked.

'Hailey,' I said.

'Why does it matter?' he asked, obviously not having an answer. Then I thought about it... why did I care?

'I don't know...' I said. He raised an eyebrow at me. There was something about her, she was interesting. Maybe I just wished she didn't get into so much trouble. I don't know. The bell rang and we all got up to leave for the end of the day. We practically had to pry Miranda and Kenny apart as we left.

'I'll see you guys later tonight!' Miranda said as she left. She was talking about the pack meeting which was only apparent to us. Kenny stared at her butt as she left.

'She's so hot...' he muttered as she exited the classroom.

'Only you Kenny... only you.' I said patting him on the back.

'You'll understand when you find your mate!' he countered. I swallowed the lump in my throat and shied away from him. 'Sorry man.' he said. I don't know why, but mates and pack positions have seemed to be a taboo subject around me and everyone seems to think I'll get touchy if they talk about it. I rolled my eyes.

'Can't miss what you never had,' I said. He smiled lightly, symbolizing the fact that he thought I didn't mind. We gathered up our stuff and made our way to football practice.

We were on the field practicing a passing and recieving drill, when I saw a familar figure strolling by the bleachers. It was Hailey. She had on a pair of fogged out aviators and was humming along to her iPod. I tuned into her voice closer and found it oddly melodious and rythmic. All of a sudden a train like force knocked me over. I groaned. Sam extended a hand to me and I got up and dusted myself off.

'EARTH TO HOLIDAY!' coach shouted. 'GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE CLOUDS AND PLAY FOOTBALL!' he said. 'I KNOW YOU'RE ALL PRACTICALLY FLIPPING ANIMALS, BUT THAT DOESN'T GIVE YOU REASON TO SLACK OFF! GET TO WORK!' he said, his face beet red.

'What were you staring at?' Sam asked, turning in the direction where Hailey used to be.

'Uh... nothing.' I said, shaking my head and blinking a couple times. What was I staring at? I hadn't even realized I was staring.

'You look pretty out of it!' he laughed.

'I guess I'll get back into it.' I said sarcastically. He just laughed and jogged off back to the lineup of linebackers.

I flicked the elastic band up in the air, it went up, it came down and I caught it. Then I flicked in up again and it came back down again and I caught it again. I was trying to preoccupy myself during the pack meeting, to be truthful, they were boring as hell. I shot the elastic up in the air, but the drift from the air conditioning vent blew it astray, and it landed on my father's face.

'Drew!' he said. The guyd snickered underneath their breaths. 'This is serious! The North pack is going to be prepared for our meeting next week! They can't have the upper hand!' I sighed.

'Yes father,' he sighed in annoyance.

'Now, the ultimate upper hand for us would be if I stepped down,' he said. We all looked at him in shock.

'But I can't do this unless Drew has a mate,' he looked at me intensely. I swallowed the lump that had risen in my throat.

'Dad,' I said. 'It could literally be anyone.' I said. My mind was about to drift off to think about how wonderful and sweet and perfect my mate would be, when Dad interupted my train of thought.

'Drew, you're going to have to try harder,' he said coldly. How was he even my father? He doesn't understand at all!

'Okay Dad.' I said blankly. 'I'll try HARDER. I'll scour the country for her, and the world, because we all know how practical that is!'

'Don't be a smart ass! What? Are you expecting to just bump into her on the streets and you'll fall in love Drew?' he said angrilly. 'This is the real world! That doesn't happen!' I grimaced and locked my jaw.

'You know what? I don't want any of this!' I said. Then I got up and left the board room, my friends voices echoing after me. I didn't need my deranged father riding up my back and telling me what to do, I was perfectly capable of living my own life. Once I got outside I lurched forward and shifted, my bones cracking into shape, so common that I hardly felt it anymore. I felt free and empty. When I'm in my wolf form it feels like I'm flying, like I'm floating inside a body that isn't mine, but that I can control. I was like a dark black shadow that whipped through the forest. Suddenly, I picked up on a scent. It was so intense and rich and delicious that I couldn't help but follow it. I was drawn to its source like a magnet, it was so addictive, all I wanted to do was find it. As the scent reached its strongest, I froze. I was at the border line... the scent was on the other side of the border line. I growled. I needed to find it. It was a mix between the intoxicating aroma of vanilla and the sweet scent of strawberrys. I stared off into the northern forest where the scent was and gazed longingly between the trees. What did they have over there? Was it some kind of secret weapon? A distraction? Because I'm sure that if I ever smelled that during a fight, I'd be a lost cause. I shook my head and attempted to block out the scent as I turned around and began to run.

Every inch of my body was against leaving that spot. Every fibre of my being told me to go back and sit there and soak in the heavenly aroma. But I knew in my mind that I couldn't because it was my duty to tell father about it.I made my way back to the boardroom, where suprisingly the meeting was still in commence. He was about to yell at me when I opened my mouth.

'Dad, I found something.' I said. He looked at me seriously.

'What?' he asked. Everyone was silent, he knew it must be something, considering the fact that I never interupt father... ever.

'Over at the north border,' I said. There were a couple of growls and wide eyes.

'What?' he said more anxious.

'I don't now what it was...' I muttered. '...a scent.'

'A scent...?' he asked confused.

'Not just a scent though... the most amazing scent in the world...' I said thinking about it. I focused in on the memory, the sweet tanginess of  the strawberry lingering in my mind and the warm inticing aroma of the vanilla and...

'Drew,' my father's voice broke my trance. 'Show us where you found it.' he said. We all made our way outside and shifted. I ran ahead finding drift of the scent once again and they followed after me. We got to the border and the scent was as strong as ever.

'Where's this scent?' he asked.

'What?!?' I exclaimed in shock. 'How do you not smell that?' I asked. My friends looked confused. The scent whipped through my senses, as if teasing me.

'I don't smell anything Drew,' Danny said concerned. What?

'I think you've had a long day son...' my Dad said nudging me in the side to move.

'But...' I muttered.

'You need to rest, there's alot of pressure on you right now,' he said and I sighed as we ran back to the house. Was I really imagining that smell? If so... I must be stark raving mad.

What do you think so far? I'm kind of winging it... but it'll get better... I promise!
