the dark moonlight gleam blurred her vision, however even with the dim navy-blue sky above her diminishing her eye sight, elizabeth could still make out the silhouette of levi sat patiently on the roof top, looking out into the forest calmly

it was bloody 2 a.m elizabeth thought to herself, what was he doing still awake?

the captain crept into the ackerman's bedroom where she found the window gaped right open, the fresh spring wind rushing in to send cold goosebumps trickling onto elizabeths arms, as well as causing all the hair on her body to stand up

as she managed to climb out of the window, tippy toeing onto the wooden rooftop, she spotted levis figure once again sat just a couple of metres away

"what are you doing up! do you realise what time it is?" she questioned as she struggled to place her body down next to his

levi looked surprised to see her up with him "i dont sleep, i thought you knew this?"

the girl sighed in response, even under the pitch black sky, she could still make out the dark purple circles painted under his hollow eyes, he looked as though he was on the brink of exhaustion during these hours

"you know this isn't healthy, im no doctor but its important to get a goods nights sleep, and your a scout now! taking care of your health is your priority"

"i thought my priority was killing titans" he grinned back

elizabeth couldn't help snickering at his dark response, gosh only he could make her forget what she was trying to say

"my point is" she returned "you have to cut this bad habit of not sleeping at night, its not good for you"

levis facial expressions suddenly turned serious as his eyes lost concentration between the millions of shiny small stars glowing down on them

"i cant sleep elizabeth.. its not a choice" he spoke quietly

she peered back at his cold face, guilt seeped throughout her body like a venomous virus, once again she felt the gut wrenching feeling of just wanting to reach out to him, to clear his mind and reassure him that everything would be alright

but life wasn't that simple

levi felt the tension in the air as elizabeth waited for his next words. "i haven't told you about my past.. ever, but it explains why i cant sleep"

he gazed back into elizabeths worried face

"but i trust you elizabeth"

a lump formed in her throat, she felt stricken with nerves as she delicately placed her finger tips on top of his, as to say "its alright, go on"

"i was born in the undergrounds of this city, i never knew my father, and had only a couple of years with my mother"

he touched the handkerchief around his neck soothingly

"i was around the age of seven when my mother began to get sick, i spent days crouched down by her side hoping she would recover, but she never did, she died shortly after"

his eyes began to mist slightly, his voice seemed to have a nervous twitch to it

"i was found by what i can only assume was either a client or a friend of my mothers, his name was kenny. he took me in for a little while, teaching me the basics on how to survive on my own, how to use a knife in my defence. he left when he saw i could live without him"

"so i spent the next years of my life managing to pass by with my knife, yet i never thought those years i spent were lonely.. well until i came here that is"

levis tired eyes met with hers once again, as he felt the warmth of her fingers clutch around his even tighter

elizabeth scooted up to sit closer to him, using her furnace of a body to heat up his icicle hands

"my mom passed away too, when i was a little girl" she began

"i must have been around 4 when it happend. i almost dont remember her at all, everything i know about her is from what my brother has told me, but its usually just vague memories like what she liked or what she looked like, i always felt connected to her when i was a kid though, because everybody told me i looked identical to her" she said touching a hair strand which had fallen over her eyes

"my dad was a rubbish man, i cant blame him too much though, after loosing mum he kind off lost any sense of care he had left. he only took notice in erwin, since i was still quite young when erwin finally became a scout, my dad left me in our old home, he left the maids and servants to raise me, although i snuck out at every chance i got"

they both chuckled lightly at her final sentence, however grey or dark the world seemed to be, it felt important for elizabeth to find some humour in it

"you know levi" she said spinning round to face him "a wise person once told me we can either grow from the past or run from it"

the ackerman looked down and shook his head as a bursting grin erupted on his face, he looked away not wanting to give elizabeth the satisfaction of seeing his blushing face

she teased him as she reached out to give his arm a little nudge

"our past doesn't define us, yes it can shape and change us, but its important to remember the past is not real anymore, its gone, like a wave in the ocean"

"so your a poet now" he teased with one eyebrow arched up

"shut up you know what i mean!. as much as the past can seem to hurt, its not there anymore. the only things that exists truly right now is the present"

levi looked at her, he saw the true elizabeth for the first time, she wasn't just a know it all bossy captain, she was a person who had gone through a similar sort of hell as him, the difference between them is just how they had grown from their experiences. elizabeth had grown strong, resilient, and sometimes it seemed stuck up and pushy. but she was a fighter, just like him

he watched as elizabeth got up on her feet

she extended her hand out for his as she gleefully said "come with me, cause you are going to sleep tonight"
