For Luc, life began seven years ago. It began on a bus, by the hills, beneath a black sky, with no one at his side but his sister, Cora.

His world is mundane, routine, and perfectly adequate. At work, he teaches, and at home, he takes care of Cora, who has spent the last four years in perpetual lethargy, from no apparent cause. And at night, sometimes, Luc sleepwalks. He finds himself inextricably drawn to the green hills by his home, guarded by strange trees, where a bench waits and a mysterious man wanders. And, if he can believe it, a door opens into a hill.

Summer is always a dream, but this summer, Cora's disappearance is anything but. With half of his world gone, Luc begins a search that plunges him down into a land beyond the hills, where time is infinite, trees are immortal, and a neverending cycle seeks a sacrifice Luc may not be willing to give.

How long is a lifetime? For Luc, it stretches far beyond human reckoning-a punishment etched into eternity for a rebellion that shook the foundations of the world he once belonged to. Once a creature of light and power, he now walks the earth in flesh as a wealthy, enigmatic man. His vast empire-built on both respectable ventures and shadowed dealings-spans civilizations, but none of it brings him peace. One rain-slicked evening, from the balcony outside his favored courtesan's room at the infamous Bessie's brothel, Luc watches a line of enslaved girls being dragged inside. Among them, a girl with hair like sunset and fire in her eyes is struck for resisting. Something ancient stirs within him. On a not-so-uncharacteristic impulse, Luc decides to buy her. Aida, stolen from a faraway land, is young, bruised, and burning with defiance. Her presence was never meant to matter-but soon, she becomes more than a passing distraction and inconvenience to Luc. She cracks something long-buried in his soul: a memory of grace, a glimpse of light, a pull toward something he thought lost forever. Yet salvation doesn't come easily. Forced to share a living arrangement neither of them truly understands, their constant clashes breed awkwardness, tension, unexpected moments of humor, and something more. Can two broken souls, worlds apart, save each other from the darkness neither was meant to endure alone? *This story is original fiction with Luc as the main character, set in an alternative Victorian era. It is intended to be the prequel/spin-off to 'Until The End Of Time', where Luc played a major part toward the end. Slavery is depicted. A person's life is shaped and moulded around their history and their future. Their memories and secrets create the person that they are, and their hopes and dreams create the person that they are destined to be. But what if you had no memories or secrets, no hopes or dreams. What if you lived namelessly, forgetting everything you knew every few days. Imagine if you had to find out who you were, where you were, and what your purpose was, and then try to live a normal life, despite not even knowing your own name. You're about to read the story of a girl who plans to do exactly that, before she has another blackout.
