At the end of Ceausescu's dictatorship, the West and the rest of Europe was exposed to the living conditions that the countries under the iron curtain went through. What shocked them the most was the treatment of their orphaned children who were inadequately cared for. Although the West had unconditional support and many were adopted, Romanian orphans today are still suffering under similar conditions.
