Y/n laughed to themselves as they paced around their room, looking at the photo their mother had sent them. It was almost impossible to see it as the sun poured into the room, filling it with warm radiating light. Y/n went to their window and pulled the blinds down halfway. "No I don't remember at all, Ma." Y/n admitted, their phone at their side.

"I suppose you wouldn't... You couldn't have been older than four when you drew it," M/n told, "There's a whole box full of drawings of you and her. Should I keep them?"

"Eh, I dunno. They're kind of creepy to be honest." Y/n said as they squinted at the picture. "I don't even remember having an imaginary friend."

"Oh you certainly did have one." M/n laughed. "She taught you piano."

"...I don't play piano." Y/n said blankly.

"I know!" M/n laughed again. "But you always said she taught you!"

Y/n sighed as they stared out the window. "Good to know I was still weird as an actual baby."

"Oh, stop it." M/n hummed. "I'll set these aside for now. You can call me when you make a decision."

"Sure thing. Love you." Y/n said.

"I love you too, honey. Bye."

"Bye." Y/n muttered as they hung up the phone.

As Y/n ended the call, they frowned as they noticed a new voicemail notification. Nobody had called them this morning beside their mom.

"You have: One new message. Saturday, nine thirty six p.m."

Y/n put the phone on speaker and set it aside as they began to get ready.

"Y/n, hey. It's Lars, um... Listen... I... could really use some advice right now, friend to friend. You're brave and all, and I was wondering, um... Actually, could I come over and talk? This is hard to do on the phone... alone..."

A pang of guilt jerked Y/n's heart as they heard him let out a small laugh through the phone. Backing out of voicemail, Y/n hurriedly called Lars, eager to apologize to him. They tapped their thigh impatiently as the phone kept ringing and ringing and ringing, eventually going to voicemail.

"Hey," Y/n said. "Sorry I didn't get your call last night. I just wanted to apologize and see if you still wanted to talk! If not, I get it. I'm really, really sorry. I promise I'll make it up to you, okay? Text me later, alright? Seeya."

Sighing, they hung up and put their phone in their pants pocket, looking out the window. He was probably still asleep anyway. Y/n stood in place for a bit, collecting their thoughts before straightening out their shirt and quickly stomping down the stairs and onto the boardwalk. On their way to the temple, they glanced through the doors of the Big Donut, a bit confused that they were closed at this time. Nonetheless, they continued forward to their destination, taking a deep breath as they walked through the temple door.

"Hey, Guys," Y/n exhaled as they stepped in

"Hey, Y/n," Steven greeted, "How are you?"

"Fine, I guess. Lars called me last night asking for help and I missed the call. I kinda feel bad." Y/n told

Steven blinked then nodded as he looked down, "Yeah... He uh, was having some trouble last night"

"Whaddya mean?" Y/n frowned

"Well, he got invited to a party with Buck and Sour Cream and Jenny and Sadie. And he was really excited and they asked him to bake something for it cause they found out he bakes," Steven began

"He bakes?" Y/n asked

"Yeah, he's really good!" Steven smiled, "Anyways, I helped him bake and get ready, but he never showed up to the party! We found the thing he made in the trash outside, but we couldn't find him,"

"Oh god..." Y/n sighed, "Have you heard from him yet? I called him and he didn't respond"

"No, I haven't," Steven told

"Huh... I'm gonna go to his house and see if he's doing okay," Y/n said as they glanced over their shoulder

"Alright. Tell me if everything is okay, please," Steven smiled

"Of course, bud," Y/n laughed as they gave him a quick hug. They turned around on their heels and gave a final wave as they walked out. Once they stepped back onto the beach, they grabbed their phone and dialed Lars again, walking at a brisk pace towards his home as the phone rang, but no answer. They didn't bother leaving another voicemail and instead tried to call him again, still no response. Their past guilt quickly transformed into worry as they approached his house, calling him for a fourth time before putting their phone in their pocket and knocking on the door.

Lars's mom opened the door quickly, glancing around before finally making eye contact with Y/n, smiling as she did, "Oh, Y/n! How are you?"

"Hi, Mrs. Barriga. I'm fine. I was-"

"Oh please, call me Martha," She smiled

"Sorry, right," Y/n laughed nervously, "I was just coming to see if Lars was okay"

"Oh Lars isn't here. He went to a party last night, so he's probably sleeping over there," Martha said, "I'm glad he's finally making some more friends"

"Ah, alright..." Y/n nodded, a sinking feeling in their stomach, "Thank you. Have a good day,"

"You as well," Martha smiled as she closed the door

"Not good," Y/n mumbled to themself as they turned away, pulling out their phone and dialing Buck as they walked away

The phone rang three times before a click rang through, "Yo, Y/n. What's up?"

"Hey, is Lars there with you?" They asked

"Lars? No, haven't seen him since yesterday morning. He was supposed to show up to a party but he never showed," Buck told

"Oh... Do you have any clue where he might be?" Y/n questioned

"No clue, sorry," Buck said

"No worries," Y/n sighed, "See ya." Y/n dropped their phone to their side and looked around as their heart began to speed up, "Where the hell is this kid?" was the thought racing their mind as their brisk walk turned into a jog.

"Where the hell is this kid? He's not home, he's not at Buck's. Has he been outside all night?" Y/n thought as they looked around the street, "Lars?! Are you here?" They called out as they jogged down the empty street. Despite how sunny it was just a bit ago, clouds had begun to roll in, casting a gray tone across the world in front of them. A bone-chilling wind rustled what few leaves were left on the trees and blew them to the ground.

"Lars!" Y/n shouted as they made their way towards the woods, the wind blowing stronger and stronger the further they went. The soft thud of the sidewalk was soon replaced by the crunching of leaves and twigs as they made it into the woods, still calling out for Lars as they slowed from a run to a walk. Despite being alone, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees mixed with the echo of their footsteps created a sensation of paranoia that crept up their spine. It felt like the very woods themselves were watching them as they trekked through, calling out for Lars with each passing breath. The deeper into the woods they went, the quieter the wind seemed to get, yet the more their paranoia grew. Y/n froze in place as they ran their hand through their hair.

"Why am I searching the woods?" Y/n murmured as they looked around, "I've never seen him in the woods before. He's never said anything about the woods," Y/n admitted as they turned back around, walking back the way they came, only to freeze again, "But where else would he be? If he was in the city someone would've seen him," they rationalized as they turned around again, continuing deeper into the woods. They continued their external, internal dialogue as they continued deeper into the woods, their train of thought occasionally being broken by a strong gust of wind or the sound of wings flapping or even the loud snap of a twig beneath their own feet. The further on they went, the more the sun seemed to disappear behind the clouds, what little light making it through being blocked by the trees above. Y/n shivered as they looked up, crossing their arms across their chest and huddling up. Though the weather was pleasant, they felt oddly cold, their heart just racing moments before had slowed down to a point where they could hardly feel it. They stopped in their place once again and looked around; the woods, deafeningly loud minutes earlier, had turned quiet, as if the trees were trying to hear what Y/n was whispering to themself. Y/n knew well they were alone, but it began to feel as if the trees had begun to stare, all of them watching with keen interest. They let out another shiver as they slowly walked forward, a loud crunch emanating from their feet as they did so. Suddenly, a buzz coming from nearby startled them, sending them jumping up into the air. Once they hit the ground, they looked around, trying to pinpoint where this buzzing was coming from. It sounded close by, but everytime they turned their head in a new direction, it sounded just as loud as it did before. Vibrations shot up their leg as they began to step in circles, trying to see what the source was. As Y/n slowly reached down their pant leg to grab their weapon, a laugh escaped from their lips

"I'm an idiot..." they muttered as they straightened back up and reached into their pocket, taking out their ringing cell phone with Steven's name and picture plastered on the screen, "Hey," Y/n answered with a sigh

"Hey, did you find Lars?" Steven asked

Y/n looked around and shook their head to themself, "No... Unfortunately."

"Weird," Steven commented, "I'm gonna go look too. I'll check around Funland"

"Good idea," Y/n said, looking up to the grey sky as they felt something wet hit their head, "Might wanna bring a jacket. I think it's gonna rain,"

"Yeah, looks nasty out there. It was bright just a second ago!" Steven said

"It certainly was... Let's hope this isn't an omen or something," Y/n responded, "Call me if you find anything. See ya."

"See ya," Steven repeated as he ended the call.

"God damnit..." Y/n mumbled to themself as they cracked their knuckles anxiously, walking back in the direction they entered the woods from. They occasionally glanced from side to side just to make sure they didn't miss anything. Their walk out of the woods felt much quicker then their journey in, their heart rate slowing down as they pulled out their phone, giving Lars one last call, which of course went to voicemail, "Wait... Ghosttalk!" Y/n said out loud, quickly opening up the Ghosttalk app on their phone, "They have that friend map thingy! Maybe he has that enabled!" they thought as they swiped left and pinched the screen outwards, turning the camera view into a map of the surrounding area, "Ah!" Y/n smiled as they saw Lars's avatar in the view. They quickly zoomed into the map and located Lars, tapping on his avatar, displaying his location was updated 10 minutes ago. Squinting their eyes, Y/n read his location: Funland. With wide eyes, Y/n fumbled to close the app and call Steven to let him know that Lars should be where he was heading. When they finally dialed Steven's number, the line connected before the first ring even ended.

"Y/n!" Steven said, sounding out of breath

"Steven! Listen, Lars is near Funland! He should be around there somewhere," Y/n told

"Y/n, I saw a gem! At Funland!" Steven blurted

Y/n's smile and excitement from finding a clue of Lars's wearabouts quickly faded away as they stared into the distance in shock, "What?"

"Y-Yeah, she was flying and she was light blue and had a weird teardrop gem under her eye. S-She asked if I was her dad! When I said no she flew off! She could be anywhere now!" Steven explained

"Oh god..." Y/n swallowed, "Y-You don't think she's got something to do with Lars disappearing, do you?"

"I dunno! I think she's here for you or something! R-Remember when Navy flew off and you said they'd be coming?!" Steven reminded

"This is a problem," Y/n huffed as they ran a hand through their hair, "Listen, go back to the temple and tell everyone what you saw. I'm running right over now. If I'm not there in 15 minutes, be concerned, okay?"

"O-Okay," Steven stammered, obvious worry in his voice, "What should we do if you're not back?"

"I... I don't know," Y/n admitted, "Look for me... But whatever you do, don't split up! I swear to god if anyone even suggests splitting up to look for me, slap them for me, okay?!"

"Try and get back soon, I-I'm almost at the temple!" Steven told as he huffed

"Steven, did you hear me? Slap anyone who tries to split up!" Y/n repeated

"I'm not slapping anyone!... I'll tell them that you say they're dumb, okay?" Steven bargained

"Fine, but when you guys find me and I find out someone wanted to split up, I'm slapping them!" Y/n told

"Fine, fine, okay! Just... Be safe!" Steven said

"I'll try my hardest," Y/n sighed as they lowered their phone and hung up, opening up Ghosttalk again to try and refresh the app, hoping Lars's location updated. When the map updated and the avatars loaded, nothing had changed. Y/n sighed as they pocketed their phone and turned to run towards the beach, pushing off their left leg and bolting down the street, only to freeze up as the sound of fluttering nearby began to grow louder and louder. They stopped and looked around, their legs spread and their back arched as they searched for the location of the sound. When they scanned the entire area and turned up nothing, their heart fell into their stomach, a sinking realization filled them as they slowly looked above themself, craning their neck up to see a tree branch that hung over the street. On the branch stood a small blue bird, preening its wings. Y/n closed their eyes and took a deep, annoyed breath that they managed to scare themself over nothing once again. Slowly, they lowered their head back down and tensed their legs up, prepared to run as they shot their eyes open, only for them to stop mid launch-off to prevent a collision with an entity in front of them that was not there before.

"Are you Y/n?"
