Tinungga ko na ang huling kape na meron ako bago huminga ng malalim. Napahilamos pa ako sa aking mukha dahil sa napanaginipan. I look at my office and shit! Nakaidlip ako! I look at my wrist watch at nakahinga naman ng maluwag ng makita na alas tres pa lamang ng umaga. Hindi naman gaanoon katagal ang itinulog ko.
Diyos ko! This whole memory lane will kill me!
I need to get more work.
I look at my phone at nakitang wala namang importanteng messages doon bukod sa tawag ni Annica at iilang text galing kay Arya.
This whole work of mine is depriving my luxury of time especially for my friends.
Alam ko kasi uuwi na si Annica this coming month. Sana lang ay hindi siya buntis na babalik dito. I'm not capable of delivering a baby anymore lalo pa't sobrang malaise ng experience ng una kong gawin iyon so I refrain myself from doing that kaya hindi ko 'rin napursue ang OB.
Arya and I are preparing, alam ko nga nakausap niya pa si Ares para iprepare ang isang resort sa El Nido. Nag-away pa si Veriane at Arya dahil doon, tsk. I never knew Ven would be this possessive with Arya after the years. Takot na takot mawala ang kaibigan ko dahil desidido na siya ngayon.
I already file a leave for that. My first ever leave after my years of residency and my first year as a regular surgeon on this hospital.
Lumabas na ako ng opisina para sa isa pang rounds na nakaschedule. After that ay pinagpatuloy ko na naman ang pinapanood at pinag-aaralan kong video ng advance hemorrhoids. There's a schedule surgery for this, my first doctor, Dr. Cruz informed me last week lang din kaya sobrang bakbakan na naman ito.
Alas sais impunto ng umaga ng magdesisyon akong umuwi na. I can even feel a slight palpitation in me dahil naka tatlong tasa yata ako ng kape ngayon. I don't even know how to sleep anymore!
I manage to change into my semi-formal black button fly cropped tapered pants. Ang putting tank top ay pinatungan ko naman ng unconstructed jacket. I grab my necklace and hid it underneath my tank top bago kuhain ang bag at lumabas na.
"Doktora!" Napatingin naman ako kay Rissa, isang nurse, na nakatayo sa may counter ng lobby. I look at them at nakita ko pang hawak niya ang iilang patient files sa kanyang gilid.
"Uwi ka na doktora?"
"Yes. Tapos mo na iyong mga patients ngayong gabi?"
"Yes, doktora. Natakot lang ako doon sa masungit na babae, balak nga kitang tawagin kanina kasi baka sakalin niya ako pag pinilit ko siyang inumin iyong prescribe meds mo pero inimun naman 'din niya so hindi na kita ginulo."
"Mabuti naman kung ganoon."
"Doktora, kilala mo ung bagong medical lawyer?" Napatingin naman ako kay Anjie na tao ng front desk ngayon dahil sa tanong niya. Her voice while saying the 'medical lawyer' sounds so malicious in my ears.
"Oo nga, dok. Nakita mo na ba? Laglag panty ko kahapon nung makita ko siya!" I remember Annica's worldly remarks when I was in college ng una niyang makita si Rahim. And I suddenly want to close my eyes and covers my ears.
Iyong mapapa-ungol ka na agad kapag tingnan ka pa lang niya. Mapapa-Yes! Lord! Oh! God! More! Jesus! I swear I could shout every saint's name in the catholic church if he beds me.
Dios mio! Annica!
"Doktora!" I snapped because of Rissa's call on me. Para akong natanga ng panandalian dahil sa sigaw niya. I look at her and awkwardly smile while slightly tilting my head to indicate a no.
"Ay Diyos ko! Doktora! Parang gusto ko na lamang mahiga sa isang kama diyan at anohin siya!" Napangiwi naman ako sa sinabi niya.
Nerissa is one of the regular nurse that's has been here ever since na nagsimula ako ng residency sa ospital na ito, so she's a lot older than me. I even bet that she has a family too.
That guy and his ability to control women and forget about their morals!
"Oo nga doktora! Para akong nalito kahapon kung single ba ako ng makita ko iyon!Nakalimutan kong may asawa ako! Feeling ko virgin na ako ulit!" Para akong nabuwal dahil sa sinabi ni Anjie at nagtawanan pa sila ni Rissa. Napailing na lamang ako because this is the first time I heard Anj with those kinds of words!
Natahimik na lamang sila ulit ng may tumawag sa telepono na agad namang sinagot ni Anjie. Tahimik ko namang tinignan ang mga dala ni Rissa na report bago tuluyang umalis. Ayoko lamang na may nakakaligtaan na trabaho. If I go home, ayoko ng may maiisip na nakalimutan na gagawin dito sa ospital, especially we hold big responsibility of our patient's lives.
"Hindi pa ho, Chief. Narito pa po siya... Opo... sige po... sasabihan ko po..." Napatingin naman ako kay Anjie ng marinig koi yon. She's already looking at me pagkatapos ibinaba ang tawag. Ibinalik ko na 'rin kay Rissa iyong mga hawak niya na nagpaalam na mag-out na 'rin siya.
"Doktora, daan daw po muna kayo sa opisina ni chief. Kakausapin ka raw po niya. " Hindi ko napigilan ang pagkunot ng noo ko dahil sa sinabi niya.
"Bakit daw?" I ask and she just shrugs at me kaya wala na akong nagawa kundi sumunod.
I solemnly walk patungo sa opisina ni Chief.
Dr. Anastacio is the chief physician of the general surgery. He's a bit scary at times lalo pa noong first year residency ko rito sa ospital, I just got use to him being grumpy. Sino ba namang hindi? kung pagsasabayin ko ang isang medical degree at hospital duty hours baka tubuan na ako ng sungay at tuluyan nang i-FO ng mga kaibigan ko. So no thanks! It's not on my mind at the midst of this moment.
"Come-in." His deep voice is loud and clear ng kumatok ako. Dr. Anastacio is on his mid-40's. Ang mukha ay may bakas na ng katandaan but still screams authority. Isa 'rin siya sa mga kilala na general surgeon ngayon dahil na 'rin sa list of achievement niya. Alam ko ay kumukuha siya ng panibagong specialty degree para mas lumawak ang field niya sa general surgery.
Even though we are called general surgeon, hindi pwede basta na lamang kami pumasok sa isang operasyon. We have wide range of operations that can conduct pero dapat ay kasama iyon sa specialties and previous practices naming. Kaya marami 'ring general surgeon ang nag-aaral pa 'rin for that part.
"Dr. Roque." He commends and gesture in front of him. Binati ko naman siya bago tuluyang umupo sa harap ng working table niya. Nagkalat pa doon ang iilang files and his laptop na kanina ya tinututukan niya pa. He removes his reading glasses and slightly massages his temples.
"I'm sorry if this is a late notice. Si Chief Valencia kasi! Damn that woman and her ways!" saad niya pa kaya naman nabuo na ang pagtataka sa akin. I look at him more at nang pinukol na niya ang mata sa akin ay bakas doon ang inis.
Chief Veronica Valencia is the head of the Cardiothoracic surgery team. She's known for being aggressive and impulsive. I know she's one of the sakit sa ulo ng president but because she's good... excellent! They couldn't condemn her position in this hospital because of her skills. She's just a little pain in the ass. And yes, she's the mother of Nikkolo Juacquine Valencia. No wonder Nikkolo is pretentious in a way na nakuha niya panigurado sa ina.
"Ano pong meron kay Chief Valencia?" Tanong ko pa, even though I have the slightest hypothesis inside of me ay hindi ko iyon ipinahalata.
"You'll be the one handling the medical lawyer for the lawsuit. Your further assignment for this one is to provide the needed information about it and... help Nikkolo in this case." Para akong nanlamig sa sinabi ni Chief. His eyes look worried and guilty because of what he just said.
"Ho? B-bakit ho ako chief? I don't have anything to do on the case dahil hindi naman ako kasama ni Nikkolo sa operating room. I'm not even part of the cardiothoracic surgery." Magalang kong pag-opposed sa opinion niya. He looks so upset with this decision too!
Ayoko! Of course it's gonna be a hindrance on my duty! And makakasama ko si Ibrahim! Thank you, NEXT!
"Hind ko 'rin makuha ang gustong mangyari ng babaeng iyon. She just barged into the office and give me a memo from the president that she's going to borrow you for some moment! Ikaw daw ang aalalay kay Nikkolo for this case!" Bwelta niya pa kaya naman mas lalo akong nanlamig. The president even has a say on this! Oh my god!
"That's quite unprofessional po! Nikkolo's case is not mine to mendle with!"
"The devil just knows how to subjugate her motherly heart in her works. It's true that it's quite unprofessional. I'm sorry, Dr. Roque."
Para akong nanlumo dahil sa sinabi niya. I suddenly want to ask Nikkolo about this pero natatakot ako na dumagdag sa stress niya pero kapag hindi ko naman ginawa ito baka ako ang mamatay dahil sa stress!
"What I am specifically assigned po? Ooperahan ko ba iyong abogado?!" My tongue is beginning to flip kaya naman bahagyang natawa pa si Chief to lighten up our conversation. Akala niya siguro nag bibiro ako! I would be willing to gamble my license just so I could tangle his insides!
"Angel, calm down. Ang nakalagay lang roon ay i-aassist mo ang lawyer since Nikkolo is down lately, he is directed to even stop on conducting any surgery so I guess this is affecting him greatly. You and Nikkolo are good friends right?" gusto ko mang ngumiwi dahil sa sinabi niya ay nanahimik na lamang ako. Nikkolo and I are good friends long before noong niligawan niya ako!
"Yes po, pero hindi naman ho sa naghuhugas kamay sa kaso ni Nikkolo but I have my work in line also. I'm in the night shift so I could not attend to the needs of the memo, more specifically the needs of the attorney himself." Parang gusto ko pang-iikot ang mata ko. I'm a doctor not a muchacha!
"You're temporarily back on the morning shift, Dr. Roque."
"Ho?!"
Oh my god! This is insane! Una, Ibrahim Gregorio is the new medical lawyer of the hospital, when he's supposed to be working under a law firm! Or any criminal or corporate cases! Goodness! Tapos ngayon eto?! Chief Valencia's way of being a mother is wicked! Kung hindi lang siya isa sa mga boss ko ay baka nakipag-away na ako sa kanya! Isusumbong ko siya kay Arya and Annica!
I love night shift! Mas payapa, mas nakakapagtrabaho ng maayos and it's more tiring than the morning one. Sa gabi ay para akong bampira na nagcracrave ng mga gawain just so I could occupy my mind more. I hate being expose to emptiness and with the night, mas gusto kong nagtratrabaho. I'm addicted to work!
My occupation and busyness as a doctor has been my medicine for my undead remorse in life. Kaya mas gusto kong nagtratrabaho. Being busy won't give you a chance to even think about things that doesn't concern your work.
I would rather die of fatigue than to actually end up in a psychiatric ward!
"I'm really sorry about this Dr. Roque. Rest assured that I will talk to the president about this issue. It is passed beyond the ethics and rules of professionalism. I will reprimand that woman and her profound behavior." Para akong pinagbagsakan ng lupa dahil sa huling sinabi ni Chief.
He even gave me a day to rest just so I could attend the morning shift the next day! This is so stupid!
Nikkolo is my friend but my job is my life! Hindi ko kayang isipin kung gaanon ko ipinilit kay Chief noon na gusto ko ang night shift but he would rather had me on the morning dahil mas marami ang operasyon sa umaga and I usually scrub with him for the O.R as his first assistant or the second one.
"Anong himala ang nagdala sayo rito sa bahay ko?!" I frown at Arya ng pagbuksan niya ako ng pinto.
"I just need a place to crash in for a moment. May beer ka ba diyan?" Mukhang kagigising niya lamang dahil sa suot niya at nanlalaki pa ang mata niya sa akin. I shook my head on her bagot tuluyang pumasok. I place my hand bag on her couch,
"Place to crash? Bakit stress ka sa hospital?" Tanong niya pa at inilapag na ang laptop niya sa coffee table. I immediately open the skype app and contacted Annica. Siguro naman ay nasa bahay na ito ngayon dahil alas siete na ng gabi roon.
"Gusto ko ng red horse, Arya! Sa tingin mo nasa bahay si Annica? It's already 7 in Baltimore right?!" I shouted at lumabas naman agad siya sa kusina habang masamang tinitignan ako.
"What the hell is your problem woman?! It's just eight in the morning and you're asking for Red Horse! Magkape ka nga!" She shouted. Napatingin naman ako sa hagdanan ng makita roon si Ven na pababa. I look at her and wave a little at tinanguan naman niya ako.
"Ayoko na magkape, Aryanna! Aatakihin na ako sa puso!"
"Damn you and your hospital duties!"
I pouted on my own habang inaantay na sagutin ni Annica ang video call. Mas lalo yata akong nanlumo ng makita ko sa gilid niya si Captain. Why do they have their own lovelife habang ako ay na stuck na yata rito at nabubulok sa ospital! Jesus!
I suddenly want a jowa...
"Bakit ka napatawag? Anong milagro ang paparating?" Napasimangot ako lalo sa bungad niya. This girl and her filthy mouth! Magbreak sana sila ni Cap! Hmp!
"I have a problem at the hospital! It's killing me. Where are you?"
"Where having dinner at a nearby steak house. I'll be headed to my office afterwards." Sagot naman niya at parang mas nainggit pa ako lalo. I saw Arya put down some fresh toast on my side and some milk. Dios mio! Alak ang hiningi ko at gatas ang ibibigay sa akin!
"Huwag mo akong artehan, Monique! It's too early for liquor!" Sita niya pa sa akin kaya naman hindi ko na napigilan ang ikutan siya ng mata.
Nang naupo na si Arya sa likod ko at bumati kay Annica. I saw how Ven place herself besides her. Ang kamay ay nakaakbay kay Arya habang ang isang kamay ay hawak iyong energy drink na lagi niyang iniinom. She's in her usual attire at mukha pang-aalis dahil naka sapatos.
Annica has Captain, Arya has Ven... Gusto ko rin...
Agad kong winasik iyon sa isipan ko to think that it will be just a distraction for my work. Busy akong tao!
"Oh, ano nga iyong problema?" Napabalik ang tingin ko sa screen and saw Annica's bitch face on there.
"Si Nikkolo kasi, he got troubled. Malala dahil may lawsuit na ngayon. So our new medical lawyer is there to handle it. Tapos iyong nanay ni Nikkolo, one of the Chiefs file a memo for me to assist them! And it's so unfair! The use of power!" Reklamo ko at ang pagsusungit sa mataray na mukha ni Annica ang nakita ko naman.
"What? E, diba different department kayo ni Nikkolo—it's Monique's guy! Not mine!
"Nikkolo is not my guy!"
"Pucha! Cay! Masyado ka namang in love sa akin!"
Oh God! I didn't come here para inggitin ang sarili ko!
"Anong nangyari Monique?" I sigh because of Arya's seriousness kaya't kwinento ko na sa kanila ang nangyari sa loob ng office ni Chief kanina. Both of them have their violent reactions! At kahit ako 'rin naman!
"Sino ba iyong bago niyong medical lawyer? Paimportante, a! Gwapo ba siya?" para akong nanigas dahil sa tanong ni Annica. Arya's eyes are perceiving me at mukhang napansin ang reaksyon ko.
"Pucha! Isang singit pa Cay! Mabubulok ka sa lambak ng Afghanistan—"
"Atty. Ibrahim Gregorio De La Luna." I interrupted their argument and role my eyes.
"Puta! Pogi nga! 'yan ung malaki ung pwet na sobrang gwapo na may salamin noong college tayo diba?!"
"Reanne Annica Del Rosario! You and your fucking mouth."
"Ano ba gusto mo? Laplapin ka ng labi ko?!"
Pinatay ko na ang tawag! My mind is about to explode on their arguments. Si Arya ay tumatawa pa dahil doon. Annica and her words should be condemning in hell! Napaka-worldly!
"It's really wrong to talk to Annica about boys when Cap is around." Linya pa ni Aryanna kaya naman napahilot na lamang ako sa aking sentido.
"Baby... I'll be going. Nag-text na ang team na andoon na sila." Tumango naman si Arya sa pagpapaalam ni Verieane and kiss her on the head. Tumango naman siya sa akin bago tuluyan ng lumabas ng bahay ni Aryanna.
"Didn't know you were live in together already." I said at inikutan niya lamang ako ng mga mata.
"Paano mo malalaman? E, nabulok ka na sa ospital niyo." Sinamaan ko naman siya ng mukha dahil sa sinabi niya.
"I have a tight schedule!"
"Tight schedule-tight schedule! Tight ka na rin!"
"Aryanna Gayle!"
"Kaya pala andyan na si attorney, e. Papaluwagin na ... ang schedule mo."
And her laughs are demonic! Maybe it is a wrong idea to have stop by her house for a moment! I should probably ploy a plan para magbreak sila ulit ni Veriane!
I never gain anything from Aryanna maliban sa home-cooked dishes niya. Marunong 'din naman akong magluto but not as good as her. So I ate my lunch there bago kami sabay na umalis ng bahay niya, I headed to my condo unit while she's headed to her work.
Mabilis na natapos ang isang araw na adjustment period na binigay sa akin ni Chief. I just take it as a rest day for me and to get my mind off the things that's been bothering me.
Nang pumasok na ako para sa pagbabalik ng morning shift ko ay para akong bampira na balot na balot. With my long sleeves and my formal ankle-length trousers and some cream colored heels. May Malaki pa akong shades just so I wouldn't be bothered by sun rays!
One of the things I hate in the morning! Mainit!
"Monika!" even in shades ay inikot ko ang mata ko dahil sa tumawag sa akin. I look at Nikkolo approaching me with a grim and apologetic face.
"I'm sorry, about my mother's rash and vulgar action. I will make an appeal—"
"No need Nikkolo, just win the case. We're friends and I appreciate what I can contribute to help you with this one." Nakita ko ang pamumula ng leeg at pati na rin ng tenga niya dahil sa sinabi ko. Umiling na lamang ako sa kanya dahil sa reaksyon niya.
I started walking papunta roon sa conference room na sinabi sa akin ni Chief sa isang text while Nikkolo is keeping up with me.
"Sabi na nga ba type mo ako, e." Inirapan ko pa rin siya sa ilalim ng suot ko na salamin and pretend that I didn't hear him.
Nang makapasok sa conference room at para akong nanlambot ng maabutan si Rahim na nakaupo roon sa dulong upuan. I silently clear my throat at naglakad papalapit sa table. On his other side is Chief Valencia and Anastacio. Ngumiti pa sa akin ang superior ko habang si Chief Valencia ay tinignan lamang ako at ibinalik na ang tingin sa white screen sa harap.
Nikkolo occupied the left sea on Rahim kaya naman nakahinga ako ng maluwag dahil doon. Agad akong naupo sa tabi ni Nikkolo at narinig ko naman na pekeng umubo si Rahim.
"Dr. Valencia, please change seats with Dr. Roque." Para akong natanga sa kinauupuan ko ng marinig ko iyon. I slighty peep on my peripheral vision and saw his hooded eyes perceiving me. Si Nikkolo naman ay litong-lito na hinarap siya.
"Shouldn't I be the one to seat here? I'm the doctor involved."
"I don't care, change seats with Dr. Roque or I will drop this case without second thoughts."
I need some pre-meds for an upcoming heart attack!
