CHAPTER TWO:
THE ACCIDENT

1863

WHEN THE NEWS OF her brother's disappearance was spread, Emma couldn't help the sobs that would escape her throat whenever she was alone. Emma didn't want to believe it. He had promised her he would come back, Jasper never broke his promises. He wasn't dead, Emma knew that for sure. If he would have died or perished in any way, Emma would have felt it.

Jasper and Emma had always shared a tighter bond than any other siblings in Houston. Everyone in the town was sure that they could be twins from the way they spoke at the same time, their flawless looks that matched evenly with one another, they could even feel when the other was in pain. That fact made Emma mess up on a stitch she had been doing. A random flare of pain had appeared in her neck, trailing all through her body. It was a painfully uncomfortable feeling, and then there was nothing. Emma had sobbed a little harder for three nights, and then her sobbing died down a little when reassurance fueled her brain.

Her brother wasn't dead, but something had happened to him and Emma was determined to find out what it was. Emma had worn her best jeans as well as a flower patterned long-sleeved shirt. She took her horse that her parents had gotten her when she started her nursing job and she took off towards the place her brother had last visited. Galveston.

Emma hadn't seen him in almost six months and her worry for him was only continuing to grow. He had to be okay. He was okay. Emma didn't know what she would do with herself if she found out that her brother was dead. She quickly shook the thoughts from her head. Jasper was not dead, and she wouldn't believe anyone until she saw proof of a dead body.

She had been riding for days. Her body ached at the constant position on the horse. She didn't stop to sleep. She stopped to use the washroom and to take two apples as well as a water―︎one of the apples being for her horse. Emma was determined, and when Emma was determined, nothing was going to stop her from getting what she wanted.

Emma was drained both physically and mentally. Worrying about her brother was taking a toll on her. Her health was growing weak and she was growing tired. Eventually, she was forced to build a campfire right outside of her destination. She walked into the forest, dragging her horse with her. Emma tied her horses reigns around the nearest tree as she started to build herself a small campfire. She smiled in delight when the fire lit, burning along with the sticks and growing enough to give her warmth.

She laid her head on her arm in which she was using as a pillow. Her eyes started to close as the warmth from the fire overtook her body. She hadn't realized how truly tired she was until she had fallen asleep. She awoke suddenly when her horse started to let out cries of terror. She peeled her eyes open, slowly sitting up as she looked at the animal. The horse was trying to run away from something, or rather someone.

Emma sighed before she forced herself off of the ground. She swiped any leaves and dirt from her body as she ran a soothing hand down the mare's mane. She kept shushing the horse, stopping only when the sound of a twig snapping grabbed her attention. She turned and looked around the dark forest, the stars and fire being the only source of light.

"Hello?" Emma's gentle voice called out. "Is someone there?"

She slowly took a step away from her horse, creeping closer and closer to the creature that was watching her like a hawk. Her head cocked to the side when she saw the shape of a man standing there. He held long blonde hair that went right below his chin, his hands held behind his back in clenched fists. Her blood smelled amazing to him, but he couldn't. He recognized her, and he couldn't hurt her.

"Jasper?" Emma's voice asked. The said male tensed when he called her name. It was full of hope and desperation. Finally, he turned to face her. Tears sprung to Emma's eyes when she saw her brother standing there. She ran up to him and threw her arms around him. "I knew you weren't dead."

Jasper's entire body tensed at the action, and he immediately removed himself from her. Emma was confused. She furrowed her eyebrows, cocking her head to the side at the rejection. That's when she noticed his eyes. They weren't the chocolate orbs she was familiar with, no, they were a blood red―︎almost black―︎that was daring her to come closer. Against everything she knew not to do, Emma went against her gut and took a step closer towards her brother.

Her eyebrows furrowed as she gently placed a hand on his cheek. Jasper's jaw clenched at the contact, her vein right beside of his nose allowing him to inhale the scent of her blood. It was such a disturbing thought, but he couldn't help it. He wasn't in control, the monster was. Jasper was locked in a jail cell in his mind, yelling fiercely at himself to run away and don't look back. He was telling himself not to hurt her over and over, but seeing her so vulnerable and so caring made the monster inside him go insane.

"Your eyes, they're different." Emma told him. "Jasper, what happened to you?"

"You need to go." He said through clenched teeth. "Emma you need to leave now before I do something I regret." He was trying so hard to fight off everything inside him that was telling him to rip her jugular out, he was trying so damn hard but she was making it so damn complicated.

"Jasper, you're my brother. I will never leave you. Got it?" Emma told him. A small smile graced her face as she said, "Besides, who would I look up to if you're not around?"

Emma sent him another gentle smile before she wrapped her arms around him one more time. She nuzzled her head into his shoulder, taking notice of how much colder he was. He couldn't take it anymore. "I'm so sorry, Em."

"Jasper what are you-" And then it happened. The one thing that Jasper Whitlock would never forgive himself for. His teeth sunk into her neck at she let out a surprised gasp. And then, her entire body felt like it was on fire. She screamed out in pain and Jasper removed himself from her and disbelief immediately washed over him. What had he just done?

She couldn't stop screaming as the venom surged through her body. Finally, when the pain stopped she was out like a light. Jasper had never felt more disappointed in himself than he was in that moment. Jasper had always protected his sister from the harmful things in the world. Whether it be from some guy that looked at her the wrong way, or protecting her from accidentally hurting herself, he had always protected her. But this time, he couldn't even protect her from himself.

He was panicking. He didn't know what to do. He could bring her back with him to join him and Maria, Jasper's supposed mate. He didn't quite understand the entire life of being a vampire, but Maria had been helping him cope with it. When Jasper had been turned, he was granted a gift. He could control as well as feel people's emotions. He felt it more so a curse than a gift.

As Jasper looked at his sister, he finally decided what he was going to do. He lifted her up bridal style and sped to where Maria was. When Maria saw the limp girl in Jasper's arm, she cocked her head.

"Who's this?" She asked.

"It's my sister. She must've come looking for me and I couldn't stop when she had come so close I―︎please, can she stay?" Jasper begged. Maria walked up to him placing a hand on his cheek.

"Of course she can, my love. She is your sister after all. Maybe she can even help you with training." Maria assured him. A relieved look fell over his features and Maria smiled at him before allowing him to enter the home she had been staying in. Jasper gently laid his sibling on the couch, tucking a strand of blonde hair that had fallen in her face behind her ear.

"I'm so sorry, Em." Jasper whispered to her unconscious state. "I'm so sorry." He gave her a kiss on the top of the head before following after Maria, fidgeting as he waited for his sister to wake up once more. But she would no longer be a human, instead she would be a vampire. Something Jasper had never wished upon her.
