"Why are you looking so nervous, Spidey?" Cash asked from the passenger seat of the car they'd rented, while Tom bit his lip from nervousness and cleared his throat. He looked at the clock.
5:47 pm.
"Nervous?" He asked with a smile, taking one hand off the wheel to cheekily poke her in the side, "what do you mean nervous?"
Cash laughed and took his hand from her side, clasping it in hers. She'd known something had been up with him all day, from the twitch in his left eye she'd prayed had gone after their first date, to the biting of his lip whenever she mentioned going back to the house.
"Well," she started, turning herself to face him, "it's just that you're doing that weird eye twitch thing you do when you're nervous, and your shirt is drenched in sweat!"
Tom knew it. Busted. God I knew she was too smart to believe me. Just act cool, man. He cleared his throat again and squeezed her hand, before shifting into third.
"First off, that's shade," he spoke, "and second, of course I'm drenched in sweat, it's like 110 degrees out here! And besides, I thought we'd been over the whole you make Atlanta 'hotlanta' thing?"
Cash blushed from beside him, but she still wasn't buying the way that his knuckles turned white as he held the steering wheel or the fact that he kept darting his eyes over to the clock on the dash.
"Shade? My god you've been watching too much RuPaul's Drag Race," she replied, "and second, the way you're looking at that clock every two seconds makes me think otherwise!"
Oh god, she's onto me. He thought. Just play it cool, you can do this. And if you mess this up, just think about the looks on Mackie and Seb's faces. He did not want that.
"Well, Scarlett's making dinner and she told me to be there for six sharp if we wanna eat," he replied, attempting to keep his cool and not blow his cover.
"What?" Cash replied, "is it that life changing that it'll all be gone if we don't get home for six exactly?"
"Apparently so," Tom spoke, taking her hand to steady his own, "and Scarlett kinda scares me when she's angry, so I'm just following orders."
Cash looked down at his hand in her lap and how it shook slightly while clasped in her own. She was still determined to find out what he was nervous about, she knew there was something wrong with him. Oh my god, she thought. What if he's nervous about the whole 'sleepover' thing tonight?
"Following orders? You're starting to sound like an avenger," she replied, before turning off the hum of the stereo and turning her body towards him. "Are you sure this doesn't have anything to do with tonight? I mean I know I made it sound like kind of a big deal, but it's cool if you don't want to."
Tom's face dropped, as he turned to face her at a red light. Oh god, not good. He thought. You're so nervous that now the girl you're falling in love with thinks you're nervous to do THAT.
"No-I mean, believe me I definitely want to," he replied, taking her hand in his. "I'm just so worried about everything that's going on with you and just want to make sure you're keeping your head up, that's all."
Cash thought back to everything that was going on in her life that she'd been so desperately trying to forget. She wasn't stupid enough not to notice that everyone in Downtown Atlanta was staring at her as Tom led her across the street. She wasn't strong enough to ignore the comments about her being a 'slut' or a 'legacy' on Tom's Instagram.
In all honesty, she just wished they'd have gone and done something low key elsewhere just so that she could shut it all out.
"I get that I'm kind of a huge burden at the moment," she started, tucking a piece of her windswept hair behind her ear, "but you don't have to worry about me, it's my fight not yours."
Tom gulped, and pulled into the complex after showing his ID to the guard at the gate. As they pulled up on the driveway, Tom turning off the engine of the car, she turned to her and grabbed both of her hands in his.
"You're the bravest person I've ever known, Cash Downey."
"You're the most delusional person I've ever known, Tom Holland."
Tom laughed, as Cash turned her face away from him. He took his hand placed it under her chin, turning her head to face his.
"Even more delusional than Tony?" He asked with a raised eyebrow, her dimples beginning to show in the midst of her cheeks.
"Stark or Revolori?" She answered, raising an eyebrow back at him. He jokily placed his hand under his chin to 'think' before looking to her with a cheeky smile.
"Well, I guess both."
Cash laughed, before leaning forward and meeting her lips with his. She hummed for a second as they parted, and placed her finger over his lips.
"Both."
Tom laughed as Cash made her way out of the car, running around to meet her on the other side. They both, hand in hand, made their way towards the back courtyard of 'Downey Village', the humming of voices in the back yard echoing through to the driveway.
"Sounds like Scarlett might have a hit with her casserole," Cash spoke, hearing the echoing voices of the cast as she made her way into the complex.
Tom took out his phone quickly, seeing a text from Robert that simply read: 'it's go time.' His hand began to shake again before he stopped Cash, his hands on her shoulders just before the entryway to the courtyard.
"Before you go in," he started, "just know that I'm here for you every step of the way. We all are."
Cash's lips turned upwards, as she gently placed the pad of her thumb against his cheekbone, caressing it softly.
"Oh Tom," she spoke sweetly, before she let out a laugh, "I knew there was gonna be a party!"
Tom's face dropped, as they both made their way into the courtyard. It was covered in balloons, music blaring through a speaker and all the 'old men' stood around the barbecue pit undoubtedly arguing about at what point the burger is 'cooked to perfection'.
"What the-" Cash started, before everyone turned to face her.
"SURPRISE!"
Cash dramatically threw her hands over her mouth, and turned to hug Tom who whispered faintly into her ear, "why are you acting like you're surprised?"
A beaming smile lit up her face as she pulled away from him, reaching up to leave a kiss on his left cheek before her lips went to his ear.
"I'm doing you a favour, Spiderman," she replied, her voice just above a whisper, "if Mackie or Sebastian found out that I knew, they'd rip you to shreds."
