The clock barely strikes midnight before my phone rings, making Michael's contact pop up on my screen. Knowing Michael, I would be lying if I said I was not expecting this. I accept the call, bringing the phone to face level so I can look at him, even through a screen.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear (Y/N), happy birthday to youuuuu..." Michael sings, excitement written all over his face. I can't help but giggle as he sings, my heart fluttering as I look at his cute face.
"And I thought you had forgotten about my birthday." I tease him, making Michael roll his eyes.
"Thank you, my love. You know you didn't have to stay up to call me, right? It would be just as sweet if you called me in the morning. What time is it over there, anyway?" I ask and he huffs.
"Late. But don't worry about it. Tell me, what are your plans for your birthday, baby?" He asks me as I relax back on my bed. I shrug my shoulders, pouting a little as I think of it.
"Well, I don't really have any plans..." I reply and he knits his eyebrows together.
"Why so? It's your birthday, you should treat yourself." He almost coos at me, his eyes piercing into me.
"I have an early class tomorrow and then I need to study for the exams. But Sierra promised to take me out for dinner, so yeah, I have some plans for my birthday." I reply and he chuckles.
"I wish I was there, angel. I wish I was there to spend the day with you. I am so sorry I have to be away on your birthday." He looks too apologetic, making my heart ache for how hurt he looks.
"Don't be, baby. We will have so much fun when you get back. We will celebrate my birthday then, I promise."
"It won't be the same." He sighs and I coo.
"It will, baby. You don't have to worry about it. What you are doing right now is more important than my birthday." I smile at him, but I feel my stomach drop at the thought of my insignificance in Michael's world.
"I... I have to go. I'll call you tomorrow, ok angel?" He asks and I nod.
"Ok, baby. Sweet dreams, I love you." I sing and he chuckles.
"I love you too. Happy birthday, darling." He repeats, blowing me a kiss before he hangs up.
I didn't even want to get off the bed in the morning, my heart desiring to stay in and bury my body in between the covers. Since I can't have my boyfriend to cuddle with, the only affection I get is from my weighted blanket, which roughly resembles the weight of Michael when he crushed me underneath him in a bear hug. Fuck, I am getting sad and sappy, and right now, I don't have time to even do that.
The bell rings, snapping me out of staring myself in the mirror absentmindedly.
I leave the toothbrush by the sink and spit out my toothpaste before I walk to the door to see who is behind it.
"Happy Birthday, angel." Kaitlin cheers as I open the door. She is smiling from ear to ear and holding a paper base with 2 coffees, which for now look like the most precious thing on earth.
"Thank you so much... Come on in." I invite her, moving from the door.
"I thought you were on tour with the guys..." I state as she hugs me and presses a kiss on top of my head.
"I was. I came back yesterday, with something very special for you, from a special boy." She winks at me, placing the cups on my table.
"Babe, thank you so much for everything... But I have a class in like an hour and I can't stay and hang out with you." I apologize and she smiles.
"I know. Michael told me last night. I just wanted to bring you some coffee and your gift, because, in all honesty, Michael would kill me if I didn't. But, I talked with Sierra and we have plans for tonight, just us girls." She snickers and I hum.
"Ok, then." I clap my hands together as she reaches in her bag for my present.
"Michael told me to be extra careful with it, said it is precious..." She hands me the box. It is plain white, with a ribbon and bow in my favorite color. I run my fingers over it before I undo it and raise the lid, uncovering some tissue paper protecting what's inside. I dig into it, revealing a beautiful book, with a black glossy cover and gold letters spelling 'Prettiest Angel on Earth'. I squint my eyes, looking at Kaitlin who seems to be as ignorant of what is inside.
I take the book out and open it, finding a picture of me inside; this must date back to our first couple of dates, and fuck me if I knew he was taking pictures of me back then. Underneath the picture, scribbled in his handwriting, there are the words 'When my life began'. I smile as I scan over it, moving to the next page, my eyes landing on a picture of me sitting on his lap, curled up against him, sitting on a couch of a backstage room on some city in the world. 'The world in my arms.' is written underneath the picture, which makes my heart drop to my stomach.
"Fuck, I really don't want to go to the lecture crying..." I sniffle, trying to hold back.
Kaitlin, who has been looking over my shoulder, coos as she hugs me.
"Yeah, I am about to bawl my eyes out too. Who would have thought he could be such a sweetheart..." She asks and I chuckle.
"I knew he was, but this is above and beyond any other romantic move he has ever done." I mutter and she hums.
"Well, you deserve it, darling. Come on, you'll see the rest later. Let's get you to class, I am driving." She suggests, patting my back softly. I hesitantly leave the box on the bed, before she hands me my coffee and I take a sip.
"I need five minutes to get ready. Make yourself comfortable." I suggest, wiping away the few tears that are brimming in my eyes.
"I will, darling. Take your time." She smiles before I walk back into the bathroom.
The drive to my class is short, but I made Kaitlin tell me everything about the days she spent with the guys. I felt a warmth in my gut as she told me all the things Michael did on tour, the little tiny details of his day to day life while he is away from me.
"I will be seeing you tonight, darling. Have fun in class and then pamper yourself, you deserve it." Kaitlin tells me as she pulls over in front of the campus.
"Are you sure you don't want to have a night in? Like, have a pamper fest, movies, pizza, maybe some sushi?" I practically plead for her to accept but she shakes her head no.
"I am picking you up at 8:30. Be ready. Now go." She commands, opening the door for me.
I barely made it through the lecture and my study group; all I wanted was to get home and savor the photo album Michael made for me. Maybe I am not that insignificant in his world.
I decided to just follow KayKay's orders and pamper myself a little. I showered and did my hair really pretty in a messy bun, put on my makeup and a red lip to fix my mood, and then slip into a nice slip dress, knowing that we will go to the fancy restaurant I like.
Kaitlin stayed true to her word and came over to pick me up at 8:30 sharp.
"When I told you to pamper yourself, I didn't mean make yourself a walking goddess... Holy fuck, girl." Kay says as I enter the car, making me smile.
"Shut up, I am blushing. Where is Sierra?" I ask as she picks up her phone and types something.
"She is waiting for us in the restaurant." She replies, leaving her phone and starting the car.
"Great. I am so glad you dragged me out. I haven't been out in a while." I state and she chuckles.
"Well, brace yourself, because we really have planned a full-blown night-out with Si..." She drives carefully, not turning to look at me.
Kaitlin walks to the little reception at the front, ordering me to stay back. She whispers something to the man, who smiles and nods before he motions us to follow him.
He leads us upstairs to the roof garden, while I look at Kaitlin with knitted eyebrows.
"Isn't this far too fancy for just a birthday dinner of 3?" I ask her and she shakes her head.
The man opens the door for us, while Kaitlin turns to me with a smile.
"Who told you it's just the 3 of us?" She asks, making me even more confused.
But as I enter the roof garden, I hear people cheering 'Happy Birthday' for me. I scan the space to see who is here, but once my eyes land on Michael, everything else goes blank.
I run to him, squealing in excitement while he just smiles and opens his arms for me.
"Happy birthday, baby." He whispers in my ear as he picks me up, spinning me around.
"You are here..." I state as I hug him close once I am back on my feet.
"I am." He replies like it is the most natural thing ever.
"How are you here?" I ask, touching his face as I am trying to realize what is actually going on, that I am not in a dream.
"Did you really think I would miss your birthday?" He asks me with a cocked eyebrow.
"Yeah, kinda. You had more important things to attend to..." I reply and he chuckles.
"Baby, you are way more important than anything else..." He assures me, tilting my chin up with his fingertips, staring down at me for a moment before he leans in to kiss me softly, causing everyone to erupt in cheers, which only make me blush.
"Go ahead and say hi to everyone. I will be waiting here." He says, planting a kiss on my forehead.
"You promise you will be here?" I ask and he sighs.
"Yes, babe. I will be waiting right here for you. Go." He almost pushes me to leave. I walk hesitantly, turning to look at him every 5 seconds to make sure he is still there and all of this is not a figment of my imagination.
I go around, greeting my friends and the rest of the guys, who seem overly excited about this party. And I am too, but the party only gives me a tenth of the happiness that Michael's presence gives me.
Before I could even talk with everyone present, I hear people singing the birthday song, making me turn around to find Sierra bringing the cake toward me. I become jittery as I wait for them to finish so I can blow my candles.
"Make a wish." Sierra reminds me, while I look at the cake's design.
My eyes stay glued on Mikey while I think of a wish to make, pursing my lips before I cast my wish. People cheer as I blow my candles, which causes an uproar and makes the DJ turn the music louder.
I finally greet everyone and return to Michael, smiling from ear to ear.
"I assume that all of this was your idea..." I state, pointing around the space.
"Most of it, yeah... Sierra had to make sure everything was as I wanted..." He replies, wrapping his arms around me, making me lean my head on his chest.
"It is perfect, thank you. And your gift was just... Fuck, I don't know how to describe it... It was beautiful, my love." I state and he hums.
"I am so glad you liked it."
"I don't know what I did to deserve you." I pout, looking up to him.
"Darling, I don't know what I did to deserve you. You truly are an angel, you deserve all this and far more." He replies, making my knees go weak.
"How long are you staying?" I ask, placing my hands on his chest.
"We are leaving tomorrow at 5 in the evening." He replies.
"We have a couple of hours..." I smile and he hums softly.
"I will be yours all of them. Completely yours." He replies with a smirk.
"Good. Cause I need my cake..." I wing at him, earning a moan of approval from him.
"You'll have your cake, princess. I promise that." He replies, lowering his hand to my ass, giving me a quick squeeze.
