Ever 30,000 years there is a demon war. Its like the purge where you either kill or be killed. This is how the next ruler is picked. The whole sister thing comes from a angel named Kira, she was the one thing Kanna cared about and promised to protect her with her life. In the demon war gaster the so to be ruling king killed Kira knowing it would destroy Kaana trust in others and making her I very easy target. Gaster is a way more powerful demon then Kanna but that ain't stopping her from trying....
There is a really long fight between them and evidently Kanna stands down, and Gaster becomes new king. Now Kanna waits for the next demon war where she promise to get revenge for her sister, a promise she bonds to keep. Oh also I should say another thing. The only way a demon can die is at another demon hands or in war!
