Meeting the Boyfriend { preference }

Calum

”So, Zoë, when do I get to meet this boyfriend of your’s?” Calum asked his 16 year old daughter as she sat across from him at the dinner table. He hadn’t been too fond of his baby getting a boyfriend, but what made it worse was that they’d been dating for 2 months and He still hadn’t met the kid.

Zoë thought for a moment before responding. “Well, he’s taking me out to dinner tomorrow. You can meet him when he picks me up, I guess.” Calum smiled and nodded, satisfied. He was looking forward to meeting him, he was just a little worried that he wasn’t all Zoë cracked him up to be.

~

Calum stood at the window facing the driveway while Zoë finished getting ready. His daughter of course didn’t know he was waiting for her boyfriend’s arrival so he could talk to him one on one. ‘Hopefully Zoë had reminded him to come inside instead of just honking the horn and waiting for her to come to the car.’ Calum thought as he paced, looking out the window with each stride. A red car pulled in and Calum’s breath hitched. He wasn’t sure why he was nervous, he just wanted the best for his little girl, who wasn’t actually that little anymore.

A knock was heard at the door and Cal immediately rushed to open it. In front of him stood a teenage boy who looked…well, like a teenage boy. His hair was neatly piled on top of his head and he was wearing what Calum thought to be dinner date appropriate. “Good evening, Mr. Hood. I’m Kyle.” He reached out his hand to shake.

"Hello, Kyle. Zoë is still getting ready, come in." The worried father replied, swinging the door closed behind Kyle. "So, you’re taking my daughter out to dinner. Where are you going?"

Kyle smoothly answered with the name of the restaurant, adding that he knew it was Zoë’s favorite, that being the reason they were going there. Calum nodded, not quite knowing what to say next. “Listen, Kyle, you seem like you’re a nice kid and I’m not going to interrogate you, but just know if you hurt my daughter I will sma-“

He was cut off by his daughter. “Kyle! I didn’t know you were here!” She said running up to her boyfriend, hugging him, and kissing him on the cheek. Calum groaned and ushered them to the door, grabbing Kyle back by his sleeve. “Have her back by 9 or suffer the consequences.” He whispered threateningly.

"I will, don’t worry, Sir." Kyle responded with a grin before heading out with Zoë.

Ashton

Awaiting his children’s arrival home from school, Ashton decided that he would take his two teenagers grocery shopping after they did their homework. Usually Wednesday was grocery day, but his son, Matt had friends over for the weekend and there was now nothing to eat. So Monday was grocery day for this week.

As Ash wrote down a few things on the grocery list, the front door burst open to reveal Victoria, Matt, and…someone else? Who was holding Victoria’s hand…? Not remembering his daughter mentioning a boy, Ashton was very confused. He scrounged his brain for answers as to who it could be but couldn’t couldn’t come up with a name. His daughter would surely have told him if she entered a relationship.. right?

Striding over to the three, Ashton greeted them. “Hey guys, who’s this?” He asked faking a smile and glancing at the boy and Victoria’s intertwined hands. It was silent for a second and the tension in the room was rising.

Matt, in an obnoxious voice, shouted, “VICTORIA HAS A BOYFRAAAAANNNNDDD.” Ashton’s face turned to stone and Victoria suddenly looked very nervous. She made an effort to form words but ended up just being a stuttering mess. Her father wanted to say a million things but didn’t think anything he could say would improve the situation. He was hurt that his daughter, who he’d supported her whole life, would keep such a secret.

Matt slowly backed into the other room to escape the awkwardness. “I’m Gabe, nice to meet you, Mr. Irwin.” Ah, a name had been put to the face. Ashton ignored Gabe and stared at his daughter, not saying anything or even moving. Just standing there with crossed arms. “Mr. Irwin?” Gabe asked, trying to take the attention away from Victoria.

Whipping his head in the teen’s direction, “Yeah, nice to meet you too.” He said with a cold edge to his voice. He turned back to Victoria.

"Don’t be mad at Victoria, please. She wanted to tell you, but I told her not to. I guess I was just afraid. She didn’t do anything wrong. If you’re going to be mad at anyone, be mad at me." Ashton was startled by this, not expecting that to pour out of the boy’s mouth.

Ashton’s face relaxed. “I guess I’m okay with my daughter dating someone who had the guts to stick up for her like that. I do not expect anymore secrets in this house though.” He said, directing the last part at his not-so-little girl. Deciding against grocery shopping, they spent the rest of the night with Ashton asking Gabe many, many questions about himself. Victoria had made a good choice, this one was a keeper.

Michael

'r u doing anything 2morrrow nite?' Michael read from his phone. It was a text his daughter sent him. He quickly typed a response telling her no, he didn’t have any plans. It wasn’t uncommon for his teenage daughter, Poppy, to text him while they were in the same house. Usually when she did this it meant she was nervous about something and didn’t want to confront her father in person.

The bubble signaling Poppy was typing appeared almost instantly and she had been had it for a while now. There was a chance she was trying to word something in the right way, and if not then she was typing an essay. Walking up the stairs, Michael figured it would be easier to just talk about whatever it was she wanted to do tomorrow evening.

~

"You’re telling me that you told your boyfriend, that I didn’t even know existed, that I wanted him to come over for dinner tomorrow so I could meet him?" Poppy nodded with an anxious demeanor, not quite being able to read Michael. "Okay. I’m not happy that I didn’t know you had a boyfriend and I’m not happy that you arranged this without my permission, but I’ll go along because I do want to meet him." Poppy jumped up and hugged her father and thanked him over and over again.

~

"So… Jordan, how long have you been dating my daughter?" The rapid fire questions began. Poppy sighed, knowing Michael could ask questions for hours. And she had to let him, she was still in the doghouse for not telling him about Jordan.

"Three weeks, Mr. Clifford." Jordan answered calmly, not being aware of what Michael was doing.

"Right, do you have a job? What are your plans for the future? Are you going to college? How many other girls have you dated?" The questions went on and on, some of them causing Poppy to lightly kick her father under the table for digging too deep. Jordan answered all of the questions without a problem, now understanding Michael just wanted to protect his daughter. He also added some humor every now and again to keep things lively and up the charm factor.

Upon leaving, Jordan thanked Michael for dinner and said his goodbyes. Closing the door, Michael turned to Poppy with a smile. “I guess he can stick around.” Poppy breathed a sigh of relief, happy to have her dad’s approval.

Luke

Ellie had been asked to prom by one of her in-school friends, Jack, and in between the time he asked her and the event, they had started dating. Because Jack and Ellie hadn’t ever hung out outside of school, Luke had never met the boy. He had been begging his daughter to meet Jack, but she wanted to make him wait until prom night. “It’ll be more special!” She would say, much to her father’s dismay.

Now it was the night of prom, and Jack had just arrived at the Hemmings household to pick up Ellie. Before he could come inside, Ellie begged Luke to not be too embarrassing. Luke loved the fact that Ellie was becoming a grown woman, but he also hated the fact that his only child was growing up. He made a mental note to play it cool.

A knock was heard at the door and Luke stepped ahead of his daughter to greet Jack first. He opened the door to a dapper looking young man, who shook his hand, also holding a corsage. “Hi, Mr. Hemmings. I’m Jack, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” Luke had to admit, he was impressed. At this kid’s age he didn’t have this much class. But, then again, when he was this kid’s age, he was in a band.

"Come in, come in." Luke said with a smile, already knowing Jack would take good care of his daughter. Jack nodded and greeted Ellie, telling her how beautiful she looked as soon as he saw her. Jack put on Ellie’s corsage and she put on his boutineer. Luke pulled out his camera and began taking pictures of the couple while they did the typical prom poses. After taking many, many photos, Luke began to tear up a bit. He usually wasn’t one to cry, but this whole thing was making him a bit emotional. “My little girl is growing up.” He whispered, mostly to himself.

Ellie had heard, though, and rushed over to wipe her father’s tears. “Don’t cry, daddy. I’ll always be your little girl.” Luke nodded and kissed his daughter on the head, trying not to mess up her hair.

"And you," He said, pointing in Jack’s direction, "better take care of her. I expect to see you again sometime soon." He added the last part with a toothy grin and patted Jack on the back. "Now you kids better get going, wouldn’t want to miss your big night!"

Luke watched as the duo walked out the door to hop in the car. He happily sighed, sure Ellie would have a good time. Although it did hurt to see his daughter so grown, he was glad she was happy. He was also looking forward to getting to know Jack more, he had planned on talking his ear of until they absolutely had to leave, but he’d gotten a bit distracted.

And that was okay.
