My dear unknown friend,

When you lie at peace with poppies at your feet,
I wonder if you ever think about
Our world now,
Two thousand and fourteen.

Although you stand in London,
Does your spirit belong in another place?
Liverpool, Newcastle, Cardiff maybe?
Or perhaps a Crewie, like me.

The troops today still look up to you,
Our courageous soldier of steel.
Those boys have stood and Afghanistan and Iraq,
But how did Flanders feel?

I’ve heard about the footy game,
That Christmas party game under the stars.
Were you a striker or a defender in that?
Or were you the goalkeeper guarding the bars?

I sit here now, in this, our wonderful school,
Pen in hand, thinking of only you.
I’m hoping, that one day, I’ll become an actress,
What did you want to do?

The school bell’s gone, I’ve got to go.
But I will never ever forget
The day that we both met,
My dear unknown friend.
