"Enjoy the little things, for one day, you might look back and realize they were the big things."
----------

Those first few weeks after Avery left were the hardest for Kyan. They used to hang out every day, and he felt like his life was empty without her next to him. Sure, they were always chatting or messaging each other, but it didn't feel the same as having her with him. They didn't talk about the moment they had at the airport, and he felt like they were both avoiding the subject. He didn't want to bring it up, because they were too far apart, and if he was going to tell her about his feelings, he wanted to do it with her in front of him.

Flynn had tried to cheer him up after Avery left. He went over to Kyan's house almost every day, and even managed to drag him out of his house a few times. It had worked in improving Kyan's mood to some extent, but he still hadn't gone back to his usual self before Avery left.

The days had passed fast and before he knew it, it was time to start his senior year. He didn't want to imagine how the rest of his year was going to be without Avery. He felt depressed at the very thought.

Sighing, Kyan continued his walk towards the coffee shop near his school. Entering the small cozy café, the aroma of fresh coffee filled his senses. A few people were scattered here and there through the coffee shop. Kyan strode towards the counter and ordered his usual. There was a girl next to him at the counter, but he couldn't see her face since she had her back to him. She looked like she was busy searching her bag for something.

"Shit, I can't believe I forgot my wallet," Kyan heard her mumble.

She turned towards the girl at the counter with an apologetic look and Kyan saw that she had grey eyes. She was really pale, which made for a nice contrast against her black hair. Her eyebrows were black too, with long eyelashes. Maybe it was the way she was dressed, in dark colors and wearing a hoodie, but for some reason he got the impression that she didn't want anyone to notice her.

"You can add hers to my bill, I'll pay for it," Kyan smiled towards the girl at the counter and handed her the money.

He took the cups and handed the girl's to her with a small smile.

"Thank you so much," she said politely, taking the cup from him.

"Sure, it's no problem," Kyan smiled again.

They exited the coffee shop together to see that it had begun to drizzle.

"So, where are you headed? I don't think I've seen you around here before," Kyan asked curiously.

"I actually just moved here a few weeks ago. I'm starting senior year here. Today's the first day," she looked nervous.

"Oh, I'm a senior too, I'm also headed towards school. We could go together if you don't mind."

"Yeah sure, thanks,"

"I'm Kyan by the way," he extended a hand towards her.

"Skylar Kingson, but you can call me Skye." She shook his hand.

"Okay Skye, we're gonna be late if we don't hurry," Kyan lead the way.

As soon as they entered school, Kyan heard someone shouting his name from across the hallway, and a minute later he was held in a chokehold by none other than Flynn.

"Where have you been? I've been waiting ages for you, my love," he said with very convincing puppy eyes.

"Um, are you a couple?" Skye looked questioningly at Kyan.

Flynn's eyes landed on Skye and he checked her out.

"Well I'd dump this guy and turn straight for you," he winked at her.

Skye looked as if she was about to laugh but she smiled and turned to Kyan for an explanation

Kyan noticed that Skye didnt smile when they met. It had been the first time he saw her smile. "I'm warning you now, half the things coming out of Flynn's mouth are figments of his imagination. This guy has dated almost half of the girls in this town. I can assure you that he's as straight as they come," Kyan said, rolling his eyes.

"Man, at least think about what you say about me, I have a reputation to uphold." He looked at Skye. "I'm Flynn, what's your name, sweetheart?"

"I'm Skye, nice to meet you."

"Pleasure's all mine," Flynn said.

"Can you show me the office? I'd really appreciate it," Skye asked them.

"Of course. I was going to anyway." Flynn was full on flirting with her now.

Kyan rolled his eyes. "Dude can you like, turn it down a notch?" He looked at Skye. "Come on, this way."

After getting Skye's schedule, they headed to class since they all had Physics first period. Kyan and Skye took two seats at the back row and Flynn sat next to a girl on the empty seat in front of Kyan.

As soon as they were seated, Flynn turned in his seat to face them. Glancing at Skye, he said to Kyan, "I miss Ave. That was always her spot, next to you."

Skye noticed Flynn's serious tone and the sudden change in Kyan's mood. She looked back and forth between them, wondering who this girl was.

"Ave is Kyan's bestfriend but we all used to be really close before she had to move away," Flynn said before turning back towards the front of the class.

All through the lesson, Kyan didn't say a word. Skye sensed that he wanted to be left alone so she didn't try to talk either and they worked in silence.

Throughout the day, either Kyan or Flynn walked her to classes since she didn't know how to move around the school yet and Ave's name kept coming up in conversations that Kyan had with his other friends as he walked her to classes. Skye was getting more and more curious about who this girl was and what she meant to Kyan. From what little snippets she heard from Kyan's conversations, she gathered that Kyan and Ave had been inseparably close until she moved away. And from observing Kyan's facial expressions, Skye wondered if she was more than a friend to him.

Right before lunch, Skye had history with Flynn so he walked her to the cafeteria after the class. They scanned the crowd until they saw Kyan waving at them and joined him at his table with a few of his friends. Kyan introduced Skye to them and they introduced themselves as well.

Skye felt out of place and the conversation turned to Ave yet again.

"I skyped with Ave last night. She was freaking out about the first day of school. I wonder how she managed without us." The girl who introduced herself as Emma said, sounding worried.

"She'll be fine. She's Ave. Sure, she'd have been nervous at first but I don't think it'd take her long to open up and start making new friends. Heck, she might even forget about us before the semester is over," Mark said jokingly, stuffing his face with food.

"Don't say that or Kyan might start crying," Toby joined in.

Skye looked at Kyan, seeing that his jaw was clenched. Flynn quickly changed the subject.

"I just realized that we haven't all hung out since Ave left. Let's go for food or something after school? My treat."

"Hey that's a great idea. Now don't back out and ditch us for some girl from your fan base," Jane retorted.

"When have I ever done such a thing? Have you no faith in me?" Flynn asked, clutching is chest over his heart.

Skye smiled at his expression as everyone at the table started speaking at once, arguing with Flynn's comment.

"You're coming too, right?" Kyan leaned towards her.

"Yeah you should come," Flynn said with a disarming smile.

"No I think I'll pass this time. It hasn't been long since I moved so I'm still not settled in. And my parents would want to know how my first day went. Maybe some other time?" Skye said with a smile that looked forced.

Kyan looked like he was going to insist but Flynn nodded in understanding.

"Yeah don't bail on us next time. With Ave gone, we need another girl to balance out these idiots." Jane said with a kind smile.

"Yeah I guess." Skye nodded.
