Chapter 4: Kicked out

If I'm going to be stuck in my room than I may as well make use of my time. The only thing missing as I do my bicycle crunches on the cold wooden floor is music blasting in the background. Luckily I still have my coloured sports bras and tight black leggings sitting in my drawers.

"Seventeen, eighteen, nineteen . . . Twenty," I shift my position and move onto the torso twist sit-ups.

"One, two, three . . . Four," I continue the count as the door clicks open and closes again. I can tell by the creaking of the heavy footsteps that it's Bass.

"Here's your breakfast," I hear the slight clang as the tray is placed on the vanity although I don't stop moving.

I don't mind cold eggs on toast.

"Thanks."

Seven, eight, nine . . . Ten. I count silently until Bass steps in front of me with an annoyed expression on his face.

"What?" I ask as I sit up straight; panting and slightly out of breath.

"Your eggs are getting cold," he extends his hand and I can tell something is bothering him by the look in his blue eyes.

"What happened?" I ask and take his hand. Bass easily lifts me to my feet, but a little too eagerly and I collide with his body.

It's too comforting.

"What do you mean?" Bass pretends he has no idea what I'm talking about . . . Shocker there.

"What happened?" I ask again and Bass lets go of his grip and takes a step back away from me.

"Eat your breakfast."

"I'll eat my breakfast if you answer my question?" I propose a deal and grab the plate of toast and eggs, and sit on the edge of the bed waiting for his answer.

"Eat your breakfast or don't eat your breakfast. I don't care," Bass shrugs before he heads for the door.

Okay what the hell? I place the plate beside me before I stand to my feet and grab Bass; forcing him to look at me.

"Talk to me."

"I don't take orders from other people; I'm the General remember?"

"Bass?" I plead and a few very long moments of silence follow.

This isn't awkward at all.

"Jeremy is dead," The anger contorts on his face.

"What?"

Jeremy is . . . Was Miles and Bass's oldest friend.

"He was shot," Bass avoids eye contact and I know there is a lot more to the story. I just hope my instincts are wrong.

I've got a bad feeling Bass is responsible.

"What aren't you telling me?" I ask before I tie my long dark hair in a ponytail with the elastic band that was sitting around my wrist until just moments ago.

"Stop doing that," Bass steps away from me again, but I quickly move and use myself as a barricade and block the door.

"Doing what?"

"Reading me . . . Stop it!" Bass demands.

"It's not my fault you're a bad liar."

He always hated that I could read him like an open book.

I guess some things haven't changed at all.

"Maybe you shouldn't stay after all; go find your family and join the rebels I don't care anymore."

"If you didn't care, you wouldn't have locked me up in the first place. You're just pissy because I'm getting inside your head, making your doubts, guilt and regrets finally surface. That's why you want me gone."

"Move," Bass orders but I ignore him completely.

"I said move and I'm not going to ask again," Bass's hands brace my shoulders and I know he will forcibly remove me if I don't give him a choice. He wasn't easy to get to open up before I left, but in the end I always got him to talk about what was bothering him; just not always in much detail.

"Are my family still alive?"

"For now . . . at least I think they are. My men didn't find their bodies amongst the rubble."

"Rubble?"

"I found out where they were hiding along with the rebels," Bass shrugs.

I shake my head in denial. Bass is lying. He has to be lying.

"How many did you kill?"

"They took out some of my outposts. This is how war is done."

"You didn't find their bodies?"

"No but I haven't given up hope," Bass's new sinister smile surfaces. I'm guessing it's his new trademark and something I don't think I'll be able to get used to.

"Stop it!" It's my turn. This new face he keeps putting on is a lie he uses to cope with his horrendous acts, and the guilt.

"Stop what?" Bass presses his body up against mine, "This is who I am now," he clutches my face between his hands, and I can see the tears he is forcing back; trying to keep them hidden from me.

"It doesn't have to be."

"You've already said you could never love a monster like me. How could you? I'm keeping you locked up like a prisoner."

"You don't think I know what you're doing do you?" I ask determined to keep a straight face.

"What crap are you talking now?"

"You act like what you're doing doesn't affect you, but I know you hate the person you've become and you miss the person you used to be. You're finally remembering the power I hold over you."

"No one holds any power over me," Bass's hands return to his sides; he is trying to push me again but I'm not going to let that happen. I can't stop now.

I don't speak but start unbuttoning his shirt, and this time I rush instead of taking my time. It only takes me a few seconds. Bass is still fighting me but he hasn't forced me to move from the door yet; that's a good sign.

His jacket hits the floor after I slide if off his shoulders and yank it past his arms. I've got Bass right where I want him. I can't hesitate, not even for a second, and I press my lips against his. This has to work, my plan will work. Barely a second passes before Bass stops resisting me, and the feelings and memories bombard me. As long as my family sticks with Miles; they're going to be okay. There's a reason Miles trained the soldiers; Miles won't let anything happen to them.

Bass's eagerly returns the kiss as his hands grip my face again, and I move onto his shirt. It's moments like these where it feels as if we never parted ways, as if nothing's changed and I feel one of his hands move under my shirt before his thumb traces over my skin. Bass's lips move down my jaw and reach my neck as my hands finish unbuttoning his shirt, and start to run up his bare chest.

Hold up. I feel the bandage and pull away.

"When were you shot?" I ask.

"The night I found out I have a son," Bass starts to button up his shirt, and it's like he literally just turned into the new cold version of himself instantaneously, "I'm not going to keep you here against your will. I want you to leave," Bass adds and I step away from the door watching Bass leave the room.

At least I won't have to fight my way out of here.

That's a bonus right?
