Now *5 years later*

I groaned as I felt tiny feet poking me in the side. When I opened my eyes I saw the sun barely coming through the window meaning that it was still early. I groaned and rolled over seeing my 4 year old daughter laying in bed beside me. I couldn't even remember how she got in the bed with me last night.

I sighed and pushed her slightly curly jet black hair out of her face. It was crazy to me that it had been four years since I had had her. She was my world and I wouldn't change it for anything. Her eyes barely opened before they quickly shut and she snuggled into me. I chuckled. "I know you're awake, baby girl," I said as I poked her side gently. A small giggle escaped her mouth.

She opened her eyes all the way and looked up at me. Her piercing hazel eyes locked with my brown ones. "Hi mommy," she said while wrapping her arms around me and snuggling into my side more. "Are you hungry?" I asked her. She nodded into my side.

"How about some pancakes?" I asked her. She squealed and jumped out of bed before taking off to the kitchen. I chuckled and followed behind her while pulling my hair up in a messy bun. "Do you want to help mommy, Charlotte?" I asked. She nodded and pulled her little stool up to the kitchen counter to make her taller. I smiled and ruffled her hair.

"Alright, Charlie. What do we need first?" I asked her. "A bowl and a spoon," she said and I nodded pulling them out of the cabinet while grabbing the dry mix for the batter as well. I let Charlotte dump some of the dry mix in the bowl. "Just add water!" she said.

I laughed and added a little bit of water. "Alright you mix that while mommy heats up the stove," I grabbed a pan and a spatula from the cabinet and placed it on the stove. I turned back around to see Charlotte concentrating on mixing all the batter together.

"Do you need help?" I asked and she shook her head. "I got it mommy," she said. Soon she was done and I grabbed the bowl from her and she got down from her stool now scooting it over to the stove. "Alright be careful," I said as I started pouring the batter into the hot pan.

I let Charlie help me flip the pancakes and soon we were sitting down at the table eating our breakfast quietly. "What do you want to do today?" I asked her as we started cleaning up our mess. Charlotte was finishing up Preschool and starting Kindergarten in the next few months and I was trying to spend as much time with her before school and homework started getting in the way.

"Um, can we go to the park?" she asked me. I smiled. "Sure baby, maybe we can get some ice cream too," I said. "Yay!" she squealed before running off to her room to get changed. I sighed and followed right behind her wanting to get a shower before anything else.

Halfway through my shower the bathroom door burst open. "Mommy!" Charlie squealed. "What baby?" I asked as I shut off the water and grabbed a towel to wrap around my body. I pushed the shower curtain back to see that Charlie was standing in the doorway to the bathroom.

Her shirt was on backwards and she had one shoe on while the other one was in her hand. I laughed slightly. "What are you doing, honey?" I asked as I tried to get dressed without exposing myself to my daughter. "I can't get it on," she said. I laughed again.

"Alright, baby. Give mommy a couple seconds and I'll help you out. Go sit on the couch and I'll be right there," I said. She skipped off and I finished getting dressed. I threw on some quick make up and threw my hair up in a wet tight bun knowing that I didn't have the time to blow dry it.

I walked out in the living room to see Charlie sitting on the couch trying to get her shoe on. "Here, let me help," I said as I kneeled down. I easily popped her shoe on and tied it in a double knot so when she was running around it wouldn't come undone.

"Alright," I said as I grabbed her coat. She stuck her arms through the holes and I grabbed my jacket as well. The New York winter was finally letting up and we were able to wear lighter jackets now and we were able to get out and go to the park again.

I unlocked our car and gently pushed Charlie inside. The park wasn't far, but walking wasn't an option. Charlie would've been exhausted by the time we got there and she wouldn't want to play. "There it is, mommy!" Charlie exclaimed while pointing out the window.

Charlie's favorite jungle gym instantly came in sight. I stopped the car and got out. I helped Charlie out and grabbed her hand making sure she didn't run off. She started pulling me as hard as she could towards the playground but her little legs couldn't take her fast enough.

"Come on momma!" she said as she let go of my hand and took off running. "Always within my sight, Charlotte!" I called after her as she started climbing on the jungle gym. I sat down on a bench within good view of her and pulled my sunglasses over my eyes.

Mothers around me were taking care of their children and chatting with other families around them. Me, I kept to myself and I liked it that way. I occasionally waved to someone or sent a smile but that was about it. I looked around the park taking in everything.

My eyes landed on someone in the distance. The person was tall and broad. From the build I figured it was a man. He had a dark hair. I could see it from the distance. I sighed and shook my head. He, from the distance, reminded me of a man I once knew.

A man that I used to be in love with, someone who I cared for. I shook my head again trying to clear my thoughts just as Charlie came running towards me. "Mommy, come play!" she said grabbing my hand. I got off the bench and followed her around the playground.

She pulled me up and down sides. She took me down the slides and finally we ended up on the swings. "Are you having fun baby?" I asked her. She nodded as I pushed her higher and higher. "Mommy," she said. I grabbed the chains and pulled the swing back towards me.

"Yes?" I asked her as I pushed again. She didn't say anything. I stopped the swing. "What's wrong?" I asked her. I looked to see that she was staring at something intently. When I followed her line of sight. I saw she was staring at the man that I had seen earlier.

"Why don't we go get some ice cream?" I asked her. She smiled and hopped off the swing while grabbing my hand. I wanted to create as much space between us and the man. Something about him didn't feel right to me. It sent a chill up my spine.

After grabbing some ice cream Charlie and I sat on a bench together eating it. I finished eating my ice cream and then waited on Charlie to finish hers. After she was done I wiped her mouth and threw our trash away. "Let's get out of here, yeah?" I asked her.

She nodded and off we went to the car to go home. The ride was quick and on the way back Charlie had fallen asleep. I parked, got out, and gently lifted Charlie out of her booster seat. I carried her in through the back door of the house and walked through to the living room.

After laying her down on the couch and covering her with a blanket I kicked off my shoes and coat. I sighed and grabbed a book and decided to curl up on the other end of the couch. Sometimes I enjoyed the silence and loved when I could get a moment to myself.

I grabbed a book I knew I hadn't read in a while. I grabbed some of the extra blanket and slid under it. Opening to the first page my heart instantly sank. I realized now that I truly hadn't read the book in a while. Inside tucked tightly into the first page was an old photo.

I pulled it out and let my finger run over the oh so familiar face in the photo with me. Jeffrey. I felt a tear escape my eye and I quickly wiped it away. It had been five years since we had broken up. Five years since we had spoken or even seen each other.

I didn't even know what he was doing nowadays. I never checked to see how his acting was going or even if it was going at all. I felt another tear escape and I wiped that one away too. "Mommy?" that small voice broke me from my trance and I looked up to see Charlie staring at me sleepily.

"Why are you crying?" she asked. I pushed the book to the side but still held the old photo in my hand. "Mommy's not crying," I said as I tried to shift and make myself more comfortable. "Uhuh," she said as she pushed the blanket off of her and crawled up the couch to join me.

"Who's that?" she asked me seeing the photo in my hand. I showed it to her more clearly. "An old friend of mommy's," I said. She grabbed the photo and looked at it closely. "He's cute," she said. I laughed and wiped my eyes again. "Do you love him?" she asked.

I took the picture from her and laid it on the coffee table. "You could say that," I said. Charlie snuggled into my side and wrapped her arms around me. I wrapped my arms around her and ran my hand through her hair. Her hair reminded me so much of his.

"What happened?" she asked me. Her breathing was starting to even out so I knew she would be asleep again soon. "We just grew apart," I said. "Where is he?" she instantly asked. I laughed. "You're just full of questions, aren't you?" I said. It fell silent for a second. "So?" she asked. I smiled sadly. "I wish I knew, baby. I really do."
