Chase

"What!!?? What happened? Is she okay?!? Please tell me she's okay!"

I looked at the blank wall in front of me. I felt anger, sadness and numbness.
She has to be okay.

"Sir, Ms. Styles has you as her emergency contact. Something happened, but we would like to talk to you in person, so if you please come to the hospital, we will be happy to tell you more."

"Im on my way." I hung up the phone and bolted for the front door, not caring to lock or even close the door. I hop in my car and speed to the hospital.

This is all my fault. If I let her stay home, if I didn't push her to go, she would have been safe. She wouldn't be in a hospital bed with who knows how many injuries.

Whereas it would take a half hour to get to the nearest hospital, it took me a little under 10 minutes to get the entrance. I hopped out of the car, running inside.

"Blake Styles! I need to see her! Where is she??" I yell at everyone, looking crazier than I ever had. "Someone, please, help, my best friend...... please!" I sobbed in the middle of the hospital entrance, not seeing a nurse coming towards me.

"Sir, Chase I assume? Please follow me." The nurse put a assuring hand on my back, leading me away from the weird stares I was getting.

"Please tell me what happened."

The nurse stayed quiet until we entered a secluded room that was no bigger than a closet. The room held two seats, me taking one of them.

The nurse looked down and started talking. "Sir, your friend was walking home around 8:00 p.m. when a drunk driver had swerved onto the sidewalk, colliding with your friend, Blake. Paramedics took her hear, stating that she was none responsive when she was being transported. The revived her and took her into emergency surgery to stop any internal injuries that she had obtained."

My sobs only grew louder, but I had to ask questions. I had to know how extensive her injuries were. "So there are for sure internal injuries. If there were none, she would be in a hospital bed where I could go see her, yet you're telling me all this because she is still in surgery, correct?" The nurse only nodded. "How long has she been in surgery?"

"For about an hour and a half now. The procedure should take about 4 hours or so."

I nodded, continuing to ask questions. "What other injuries are there? Is there anything I need to get so I can be sure to have everything she needs when she gets out? Will she be okay?" I wanted to be prepared. I wanted Blake to be okay. No. I needed her to be okay. She was my life, if she was gone, I'm sure I wouldn't be here for much longer. She's my other half. She's my sister.

"As of right now, we know of her having a broken left arm and most of her ribs are broken. Her leg has an awful sprain but should heal quickly. The one thing the doctors were most concerned about were her head injuries..."

"Head injuries? What kind of head injuries!!??" I yell, only to apologize. This lady has been nothing but kind and has been giving my all the answers I needed.

"When we brought her in, she had blood on both of her temples. On temple had been dragged across the asphalt, causing a wound. The other had been hit during the impact of the car. There are concerns about whether the one that had been hit will cause memory loss or slight confusion."

"So she may not remember anything..... or she may not remember the accident.... it's either one of those?" The nurse nodded.

"There is a slight chance that nothing had been affected and she will remember everything." I nod, taking in all of the information I was being given. I had to ask one final question, the question I was dreading to ask.

"Is there a chance that she will die?"

The nurse looks up, her eyes holding the answer I didn't want.

"It's a 50/50 chance of survival in most cases. In Blakes case, with her injuries and the head injuries, there more of a 20% chance of survival...."

My body slouched, all the air going out of my lungs. Tears poured out like a dam had just opened.

She could die.

I thanked the nurse and she patted my knee before getting up and leaving, telling me that she will give me a call if she has any more information.

I get up out of the chair. I grab my phone and make the call.

The phone rings and ring and ring until I hear someone pick up.

"Hello?"

The voice sounded calm yet empty, like the person hasn't gotten a good nights rest in days.

"Anne?"

A slight pause.

"Yes? Who is this?"

"It's Chase. Blakes friend."

The other side goes silent. I could have sworn that she hung up. As I was about the take the phone away from my ear and hang up so I could try again, she spoke up.

"Oh my gosh, it's so good to hear your voice Chase." I could hear some sort of joy in her voice, making it even harder for me to tell her the news. "Chase? How is Blake? Is she okay? Can I talk to her? Does she know you're calling?"

I shake my head, feeling the tears blur my vision. "No, she does not know that I'm calling," I said just above a whisper.

From the other end I could hear someone ask Anne who was one the phone.

"Honey, its Chase." Tear were falling down my cheek. I thought I would have to tell just Anne, but now I have to tell Gemma also.

"Chase, where is Blake?" Gemma's voice sounded hopeful. She was hoping I was telling the that Blake misses them and is coming home....

I stayed silent, all of the words I wanted to say would not leave my mouth. The only thing that would come out were the sobs.

"Oh my God..... Chase?"

"She's hurt..... she's hurt bad..... walking home from work........ car..... drunk driver....... he hit her.........oh my gosh.....Blake." I sobbed harder and harder. I couldn't control myself, I was shaking, my knees buckle and and I hit the floor.

"No!! Where are you? Which hospital!! Chase, honey, please you have to tell me!"

I choked out the name of the hospital, surprised that I could even do that.

"We will be there, please, don't leave. We will be right there!"

"They had to take her into emergency surgery......"

"Alright, we will be there soon, sweetheart." With that, the line went dead, leaving me to cry by myself. I picked myself up off the ground, wiping my eyes. I started walking to the hospital gift shop. I want her to have something to hold when she gets out of surgery. She loved fluffy teddy bears, so I will make sure that I get her a man fluffy teddy bear to hold. Entering the store, I saw a wall filled with Bears. I walked over, analyzing all of them, wanting one that reminded me of her.

At the very end of the line of Bears, there was a medium sized bear that was holding a heart saying "Dear sissy, I love you." It was fluffy and adorable. I laughed a little at the saying. She hated me calling her sissy...... This is perfect.

After I bought the bear, I went back to the waiting room, holding the bear close to me.

Soon, my phone started ringing again. Thinking it was the nurse, I didn't care to look at the number, answering it with a small "Hello?"

"Please tell me you're joking..... please tell me she's fine and this was just one sick joke..... please." The voice sounded worse off then mine. When I didn't answer right away, the person started yelling. "Tell me you're joking!!! Tell me your fucking joking!! I can't lose her!! I can't!!" I heard Anne in the back trying to calm Harry down. "NO! LEAVE ME ALONE! I NEED TO SEE HER! I NED HER TO BE OKAY!" I heard crying and sobbing, mostly from Harry. "We are about an hour away. Please call us if there is any more information. If she comes out before we get there, please take care of my little girl."

I nodded to myself. "I will Anne. I promise. Anne?"

"Yes?"

"Blake will be so happy so see you all." With that, I hung up the phone, patiently waiting.
