Terry

My mother and I had spent the morning together, which is the most time we had spent together since she started working. I began to see my mother less and less as time went on. Eric was always working so I spent most of my time home alone. Did it bother me? A little. I felt like I wasn't as important to her anymore.

She promised that we were going to spend the whole day together, so I was happy about that.

"Your going to look so beautiful tonight." My mother said excitedly, like she was going to homecoming.

I giggled. "You're pretty excited. It's like you're the one who's going to homecoming." I said.

"I'm sorry but it's just that I didn't go to things like that in high-school. Everything was just work, work, work."

"Well maybe you need to work less." I shrugged. "You need to enjoy your life mom. Work can wait sometimes. Don't you think?" I looked at her questioningly.

She shook her head, changing the subject. "Let's get in this place. We're just on time."

My mom parked her jaguar in the parking lot of the salon and turned the car off. We got out of the car and walked into the shop. The owner was a really good friend of my mother's. And not only was she my mom's best friend but she was also my god mother.

"There's my girl." My aunt Patricia said rushing over to me.

She pulled me into a hug and then my mother. Stepping back, she did a once over of me and smiled.

"Still beautiful as ever and so grown now." She said. "I hear tonight's pretty special?" She glanced at my mother then me.

"Homecoming. And I need to look fly." I said.

"And who better than me? You know I gotcha baby."

She began leading me further into the salon, but my mother stayed behind.

"I'll be back later for you. I have some things to take care of."

"What happened to us spending time together?" I asked clearly disappointed.

She made her way to the door. "I promise I'll be right back."

I huffed and continued to walk with my aunt. I frowned and sat at the bowl.

"You know how your mama is baby. All she knows is work. But don't let it get to you. Just think about how much fun you're going to have tonight."

"You're right. Thanks Tee Pat." I smiled.

"You're welcome baby."

-2 hours later-

I was finally home and I was pretty pissed off at the fact that I was running late. Since Kendall couldn't come to get me and my mom hadn't bother to answer her cell, I had no choice but to call Eric.

My mother had let me down once again. I really thought she could put herself aside for one day. I guess I was wrong because she never came back for me. It was embarrassing to say the least. At this point, I didn't want to speak to her.

"Thank for picking me up Eric. I appreciate it." I said walking into the house.

"No problem." He said dropping his keys on the table by the door.

Slightly irritated, I made my way to my room and closed the door behind me before walking over to my bed. I took the dress out of it's box and laid it onto the bed. I walked into the bathroom and took a quick bath, careful not to mess up my hair and makeup.

Afterwards, I lotioned my body up and slipped into my undergarments. Then I slipped into my dress, jewelry, and a pair of heels to match. I walked over to the mirror and smoothed my dress out, making sure I looked fine.

I looked up at the clock and figured I would have time to take a couple of pictures after all.
Today was supposed to be a special day. My mother left me hanging, once again...

I had everything I wanted, from the clothes and the shoes. Materialistic things just didn't do it for me. I just wanted to come first to my mother. For once I hoped to be put before her job. I was tired of always being pushed aside as if I wasn't important.

I took a deep breath and blinked away the tears welling up in my eyes.

"I'm not letting her ruin my night, not this time." I shook my head fanning myself. "No tears." I sighed.

I grabbed my clutch and filled it with the stuff I would need. Carefully, I made my way down the stairs. I strolled into living room where Eric was busy watching the television in front of him.

"How do I look?" I asked, taking his attention away from the television in front of him.

I wore a simple pink dress and a pair of diamond heels and silver jewelry to match.

He looked me up and down with low eyes. There was a certain look in his eyes when he did. I couldn't quite read him. I looked at him and smiled, playing coy.

"What?" I asked putting my hands on my hips. "Do I look terrible or something?"

Eazy got up from the couch and walked over to me. I started to panic just a little before he grabbed my hands.

"You look beautiful." He said. "Stop tripping. You ready to go?"

I nodded and he grabbed his keys from the coffee table before shutting off the tv.

Eric and I were making our way out the door when the house phone began ringing. I quickly walked over to it in case Jerome, my date, was calling.

"Hello?" I answered quickly. "I'm sorry I'm running behind. I'm about to-(gco)"

To make things even worse now, my date for the dance called and told me that he was taking his girlfriend to the dance. They had recently gotten back together and of course she wanted him to take her instead of me.

My heart sank and I felt tears well up in my eyes once again.

"Okay." I sighed. "N-no it's fine. I understand."

I hung up the phone and walked over to the couch. I plopped down onto it and sighed.

"Who was that?" Eazy asked in concern, shutting the front door.

At this point I didn't want to go anymore. I was almost an hour late and I had no date. I couldn't show up alone. Everyone I knew had a date to the dance. I'd look like a complete loser in front of everybody.

Eric sat down next to me. "What happened?"

"My date is taking someone else. So now I have no date and I'm gonna be spending tonight alone." Tears started to fall down my cheeks. "I feel like a loser."

He scooted closer to me and wrapped his arm around me. "Stop crying. You're going to mess up this beautiful face of yours."

He looked into my eyes and I looked into his. I sniffed and laid my head onto his chest. He rubbed my back, trying to be comforting. I appreciated it but I still felt like crap.

"You know what." He says standing up from the couch. "There's a lot to do on a Saturday night."

"Eric you don't have to do anything." I stood up. "I'm fine." I said walking past him.

"I'm not taking no for an answer Terry."

"Well I'm saying it." I looked back at him from the steps. "No."

"You can sit inside and feel sorry for yourself or you can hit these streets with me and have some fun." He shrugged.

I looked at him and he looked at me. Eazy began making a funny face and I busted out laughing. I couldn't help but to smile back at him. He was so cute and caring.

"Alright." I began going up the stairs. "Let me change into something more comfortable." I made my way upstairs to my room.

Who knew? Of all people that Eric and I would become so close? The fact that my own mother had abandoned be on such a special occasion was pathetic. Eric was there for me and if it weren't for him, I'd be crying, eating out of a tub of ice cream right now.

I'm gonna try to enjoy tonight. Hopefully I can get my mind off of what a shitty night it's been.
