*Chapter 9*

~5 months~

“Oh my god, I’m so nervous!” I said quietly to Noah. We were at the doctor’s office. I was sitting in the bed and Noah was sitting in the chair next to it, holding my hand.

“For what? It’s not like you haven’t been here before,” Noah rolled his eyes. I lightly slapped his hand.

“I know but still. It’s just one of those things you’ll always be nervous about. Like what if something’s wrong with my baby?” I said. We were going to find out the sex of the baby today and I was extremely excited as well as nervous. Even if I go to the doctor’s regularly I’m still going to be worried. Anything can go wrong between the visits.

“Everything will be fine,” Noah rubbed circles into the back of my hand soothingly. “I promise.” He said. He could do anything about it if there was something wrong but it made me feel better just to have it said.

“You’re right,” I agreed with him just as the doctor came in the door.

“Hello, Jourden. Noah.” She smiled warmly at us. She knew Noah already because he had been with me at every visit, asking more questions than me!

We both greeted her back before she got down to business. I already knew what to do without her saying it so I lied back on the table, pulled my shirt up to just below my bar and pulled my pants down some. She put the cold gel on my stomach and then started running the scanner over my stomach.

Immediately my baby’s heart beat filled the silence. I smiled slightly, hearing that everything was normal and there were no slow or unusually fast beating. Or that there were no stutters in there.

“Well,” the technician said turning and grinning at me. “Are you ready to find out the sex of your baby?” I almost  passed out from the excitement. However before I could get a word out, Noah answered for me.

“Yes!” He was grinning like a madman which was a total 180 twist from his earlier attitude.

“Um, yeah,” I laughed a little. “What he said.”

“Okay, it looks like you’re going to be having…a girl.” My heart stuttered for one second before picking up full speed. I was going to be having a baby girl. A little girl that would either look just like me, just like Tanner, or a mix of both.

“A girl,” I whispered reverently reaching down to rub my stomach as soon as she’d wiped it off. I smiled to myself and briefly forgot where I was and that I wasn’t alone.

“Did you here that?” Noah said, putting his much larger hand over mine which was still cradling my stomach. “You’re going to be having a baby girl. Of course she’ll look just like her beautiful mother.” He kissed my cheek and I blushed a little. It was times like this that I desperately wished that Noah was the father. Even if the timing was all wrong and I didn’t even know Noah existed then, it still didn’t stop me from wishing. At least I knew he would be there.

Noah put his face down near my stomach. He lightly kissed my baby bump and then laid his cheek against it. “Hello, Angel. It’s uncle Noah,” he chuckled to himself and I just watched him, seeing how excited he was over this.

The doctor had excused herself a few minutes ago. “Angel?” I questioned curiously. He leaned back up, as I got fixed my clothes up and got off the bed.

“Yeah that’s my new nickname for her.” He smiled at me. “You ready?”

“Yeah, just let me go make another appointment and I’ll meet you at the car.”

He nodded and walked outside as I went and talked to the receptionist getting my next appointment. I walked outside a few minutes later had found Noah had pulled the car up near the door. I got in and he pulled away from the curb, before he spoke. “So are you excited about what you’re having?”

I shrugged. “Of course. I’d have been just as happy if it was a boy.”

“Fair enough. Hungry?”

My stomach growled loudly at that moment and I laughed. “Did you really have to ask?”

“I guess not. You have been eating like a hog lately,” He cracked up and my cheeks flushed. I scowled at him.

“You know you’re lucky that my hormones aren’t as out-out-whack as most pregnant women because otherwise that might have hurt my feelings,” I snapped.

“It isn’t going to stop you from eating though is it?” He smirked at me.

“Um, that’s beside the point—Oh, there’s KFC!” I yelled at him suddenly. He slowed down right at the entrance and turned in.

“My point exactly,” He chuckled quietly. I scowled and go out of the car. I was really starving and I just had a taste for a mash bowl. I speed walked over to the door with Noah’s quick footsteps following me.

I walked up to the counter and a young girl came over to help me. “Can I help you?”

“Hi, can I get two mash bowls?” I smiled at her and I saw out of the corner of my eye, Noah’s head twist in my direction.

“And you?” She asked Noah after typing my order into the screen.

“Y-yeah, uh, can I get four hard-shell tacos?” She typed it in the screen before giving us our total. Noah paid for the food and we both went and sat down and waited for them to be made. A few minutes later our order was called and we grabbed our food and sat down to eat.

We had a light conversation as we ate. I was debating in my head now whether not to tell him about Tanner. It’s been four months since I’ve known Noah and he’s been a great friend to me so I think he deserves to know.

“Hey, Noah?” I said tentatively.

“Yeah?” He asked and then bit into one of his tacos.

“Um, remember how I told you one day I would tell you about the father or my baby?”

“I do,” he spoke cautiously knowing this was a touchy subject for me.

“Well, I’m ready to tell you. If you still want to know.”

He reached across the table and grabbed one of my hands. “I only want to know if you really want to tell me. Otherwise, it doesn’t really matter.”

“I think you deserve to know.” I smiled at him.

“If you think so,” He shrugged.

“Wow,” I blew out a breath. “So where do I start? Um, okay. In second grade I met a boy named Tanner. I honestly can’t tell you what I felt the moment I saw him. It was just like, I don’t even know. How can you explain a six year old’s feelings?

“I just know that I wanted to get to know him. I was new and I remember seeing him standing around with his friends. I guess he saw me too and felt bad for me they came over and started talking to me. I made friends with them quickly. One day, we were on the playground and Tanner asked me to be his girlfriend.” I laughed as I got lost in the memory. It was almost like I was speaking to myself as I wasn’t really paying attention to Noah at the moment.

“Now being six and all, we didn’t take it seriously. Just held hands and he kissed my cheek all the time because he said his dad did it to his mom a lot, so that’s what girlfriends and boyfriends should do. Um, as we got older we kept the title as a couple, and by seventh grade we started to take it more seriously. That was actually the year I had my first kiss. Now it was official, we really were together. We stayed strong all the way up to senior year.” I stopped and looked out the window. It was starting to rain now. It seemed like a sign to me, because my story was about to start getting sad.

“I’d always thought we’d always be together, you know? But I guess even the most perfect couple has problems every now and again. Anyway, it was the day I found out I was pregnant. I was on my way to tell Tanner. When I got there though my best friend Chloe was there. I was confused because, they never hung out unless it was all four of us together. Jaimie is my other friend, just so you know. Anyway, I overheard them talking, and Tanner sounded upset…” I proceeded to tell him all about what I’d heard, and what happened afterwards.

“And that’s how I ended up here,” I ended with a sad smile.

“That’s a lot to take in.” Noah said quietly.

“Yeah, I know.”

“He really broke up with you by text message? What a coward!” Noah said sounding extremely upset.

“It’s okay. I was expecting it, so it wasn’t as bad as it would have been had I not known.” My eyes were getting teary. I was so tired of crying about this.

“Don’t cry, Jourden. Now that I know the whole story he definitely doesn’t deserve your tears! Remember you still have me.” He offered with a lopsided smile. I grinned back at him and help my arms up.

Noah immediately came around to my side of the table and wrapped me in a bear hug. We stayed like that for a minute before I released him. I had déjà vu from the last time this happened.

“Thanks, Noah,”

“You’re welcome. And you too, Angel.” He patted my stomach affectionately. I looked up and suddenly realized we had an audience. He workers behind the counter were staring right at us. Even the person who makes the food in the back was peeping. I was embarrassed because I didn’t know if they had heard anything or not. These stranger’s had probably heard my sob story.

Noah saw what had my attention. “Don’t you have some work to do?” He snapped. “Friggin’ nosy people!” He muttered and went back to his side of the table before digging into his food once more. I laughed out loudly.

What would I do without Noah?
