Epilogue

“Seriously? Why is it that you always blind-fold me?”

“Because I love surprising you.”

Klaus’ hands were on her waist as he led Caroline into the unknown. A black blind-fold covered her eyes, and she relied entirely on the Original to lead her to their destination, wherever that might be.

The past year had been peaceful and fun. Her senior had been everything she had expected it to be, filled with stress over homework, drama and organizing parties. A week ago she had finally graduated, and she had begun to travel the world with Klaus.

Klaus had freed his hybrids after some convincing from Caroline. There were other werewolves who would want to set them free, which made it safer to let them go. She had also made him agree that keeping them as servants was wrong.

She was still very close to all her friends in Mystic Falls. Things with Tyler had become comfortable again, after they had agreed to just stay friends. She had cried when they had all parted ways, especially with Bonnie and Elena, but knew that they would keep contact. Deep in her heart, she knew that after everything they had gone through together their bonds were unbreakable.

Caroline giggled when Klaus’ hands playfully tickled her, and she slapped them away. They disappeared, but soon she felt a tugging at the back of her head.

“Finally!” she cried just as the piece of clothe came off. After that she was stunned speechless.

In front of her the whole city of Paris stretched out. Millions of lights glittered up at her, lightening up the night sky. The beautiful city was in plain sight, enabling her to see all the places they had visited the past few days. She had gone shopping, visited Louvre, seen all tourist attraction and more. And everything had been done together with Klaus.

During this past year, her love for Klaus hadn’t diminished. If anything, it had increased. She constantly found new reasons and ways to love him. He had patiently waited for her to graduate, before embarking on a trip around the world with her. He had promised to show her all of his favorite places, but had avoided telling her exactly where. That had resulted in Caroline having several suitcases of clothes for different temperatures and occasions.

Looking at the romantic city, she finally found her voice. It was filled with awe. “It’s so beautiful. Where are we?”

“We are on top of the Eiffel Tower. This is their restaurant,” Klaus replied, snaking an arm around her and leading her to the table prepared for them.

The whole restaurant was empty except for them. Candles had been lit in the entire restaurant, giving it a warm glow. Roses waited for them at their table, which was situated by a floor-to-ceiling window. In a corner an orchestra played softly.

“This is perfect, Klaus!” she exclaimed, throwing her hands around his neck and pecking his lips.

He pulled her in for a longer kiss, before grinning. “Come on. We shan’t let the food wait much longer.”

Klaus was referring to the time she had spent preparing for this evening. After he had told her to dress extra nice this evening, she had spent hours picking an outfit and preparing.

“Well, if someone had told me where we were going, I may have been faster,” Caroline countered, but couldn’t make the smile leave her lips. Then she looked around at the empty restaurant. “Klaus, why is it empty?”

“I might have arranged for us to dine alone tonight,” Klaus answered sheepishly.

She raised her eyebrows. “You booked the entire restaurant?” A laugh escaped her lips. “Somehow, I’m not surprised.”

“That’s because you know me, love,” he whispered into her ear intimately, before ushering her to their table.

A waiter came to help them sit down, but Klaus insisted on pulling out Caroline’s chair himself. Once seated, the waiter immediately poured them champagne. Afterwards, he came out with two plates covered with metal lids. Setting them down on the table, he took the lids off.

“Bon apetite!” he smiled, before leaving.

They ate many different gourmet dishes, all absolutely delicious. Afterwards they went outside to the balcony. Candles had been lit here as well, adding to the romantic atmosphere. The chilly air raised goose bumps on her skin. Klaus, attentive as always, took off his suit jacket and put it over her shoulders. Afterwards he wrapped his strong arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

She put her hands over his. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” he easily replied.

“No, not only for that.” She turned in his arms to look at him, sincerity filling her voice as she uttered the next sentence. “Thank you for showing me the world, for making me realize that life is bigger than Mystic Falls. Thank you for showing me true love.”

For a few seconds he just stared at her in silence, before nodding to himself. Releasing her from his grip, he took a step back. A small smile played on his lips at her bewildered expression. When he however dropped to one knee, a gasp left her lips.

“Caroline. I have lived for a very long time, but I have never met anyone like you. You were never afraid of saying what you thought of me, even when you feared me. You were always willing to risk your life for those you cared about. Ever since the first day I met you, I have admired your spirit and heart. You are full of life, and your laughter lights up my world. I had fancied you for quite some time before you finally decided to give me a chance, and my gratitude for that opportunity will never fade. After all, without it I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to be with the love of my life.”

His eyes shone as a smile spread over his lips. “I know for certain that I want to spend the rest of eternity with you. No matter how bleak and dark the time, my happiness will never falter if I just have you. My love for you is an inextinguishable flame, which warms me day by day. So all I ask of you now, is for you to let me take care of you. I shall give you the life you deserve, as well as the whole world.”

He paused, a trace of nervousness in his eyes. “Caroline, will you marry me?”

“Yes-yes-yes-yes!” she chanted as soon as she could speak again, getting tears of happiness in her eyes. “Do you even have to ask?”

Klaus immediately rose up and took her in his arms. Bliss filled her as he swung her around in the air, his laugh joining hers. After a few seconds he put her down, kissing her lips in joy.

And finally, Caroline felt like her life was absolutely perfect. There had always been some worry nagging at the back of her mind. Now though they blew away with the fact that Klaus would always be there to help her. So much had changed since last year, and she couldn’t more content with the fact that it did. Klaus and her had overcome the obstacles on the way, and were finally together. Now that her school had finished as well, she had time to discover the world before going to college.

She didn’t know what the future held. However, she did know that a new world was waiting for her. And she couldn’t wait for Klaus to show it to her.

“Where are we going next?” she asked curiously, still slightly breathless after their kiss.

His eyes glittered as the lights below them when he winked at her. “I was thinking of Tokyo.”
